The Hollywood scene has not been very friendly to women. The American woman has had several challenges ranging from sexism and gender bias to striking the right work-life balance and trying to conquer the gender wage gap. Women seem to encounter different tests and stresses in the workplace compared to their male counterparts.

An American woman and more so the African American woman have had to claim their place in the white male-dominated industry for ages. This list of women has not an only paved way for the future generations but also reshaped the American industry in the eyes of its audience.

Even with all these challenges, women have risen and continued to dominate Hollywood. We get to look at the most popular American actresses at the moment:

1. Meryl Streep

Mary Louise Streep was born on June 22nd, 1949. She is an American actress.

In 1978, she won a Primetime Emmy Award for her leading role in the mini-series Holocaust and received her first Oscar nomination for The Deer Hunter.

She is often described as “the best actress of her generation.” She is particularly known for her versatility and accent adaptability. She has garnered numerous accolades throughout her career spanning over four decades, including a record 21 Academy Award nominations, winning three, and a record 32 Golden Globe Award nominations, winning eight. She has also received two British Academy Film Awards, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, and three Primetime Emmy Awards, in addition to nominations for a Tony Award and six Grammy Awards.

2. Viola Davis

Viola Davis was born on August 11th, 1965. She is an American actress and producer.

She began by acting in minor roles in several films and television series in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

She is the recipient of an Academy Award, a Primetime Emmy Award, and two Tony Awards, she is the first African-American to achieve the Triple Crown of Acting.

In 2017, she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 2020, The New York Times ranked her ninth on its list of the greatest actors of the 21st century up to that point.

3. Julianne Moore

Julie Anne Smith was born on December 3rd, 1960. She is an American actress and author.

She is the recipient of numerous accolades, including an Academy Award, a British Academy Film Award, two Golden Globe Awards, and two Emmy Awards.

Moore received considerable recognition in the late 1990s and early 2000s, earning Academy Award nominations for various films.

She won a Primetime Emmy Award for her portrayal of Sarah Palin in the television film Game Change (2012).

She won the Academy Award for Best Actress in Still Alice (2014) and in Cannes Film Festival. (2014).

4. Angelina Jolie

Angelina Jolie was born on June 4th, 1975. She is an American actress, filmmaker, and humanitarian.

She won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the 1999 drama Girl, Interrupted. Her starring role in Tomb Raider (2001) established her as a leading Hollywood actress.

Her biggest commercial success came with the fantasy picture Maleficent (2014). She is also known for her voice role in the animation film series Kung Fu Panda (2008–present).

She is the recipient of numerous accolades, including an Academy Award and three Golden Globe Awards, she has been named Hollywood’s highest-paid actress multiple times.

5. Halle Berry

Halle Maria Berry was born on August 14th, 1966. She is an American actress and model.

Her breakthrough film role was in the romantic comedy Boomerang (1992).

Berry established herself as one of the highest-paid actresses in Hollywood during the 2000s. She won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in the romantic drama Monster’s Ball (2001). Becoming the first and, to date, only African-American woman to have won the award.

She took on high-profile roles in the X-Men film series (2000–2014), in the thriller Swordfish (2001), Bond girl Jinx in Die Another Day (2002), and the title role in the much-derided Cat-woman (2004).

6. Jennifer Aniston

Jennifer Joanna Aniston was born on February 11th, 1969. She is an American actress and producer.

Her first major film role came in the 1993 horror-comedy Leprechaun.

Since her career progressed in the 1990s, she has become one of the world’s highest-paid actresses.

Aniston rose to international fame for her role as Rachel Green on the television sitcom Friends (1994–2004), for which she earned Primetime Emmy, Golden Globe, and Screen Actors Guild awards.

She returned to television in 2019, producing and starring in the Apple TV+ drama series The Morning Show, for which she won another Screen Actors Guild Award.

Julia Fiona Roberts was born on October 28th, 1967. She is an American actress.

She is known for her leading roles in films of several genres, from romantic comedies and dramas to thrillers and action films.

She is the recipient of various accolades, including an Academy Award, a British Academy Film Award, and three Golden Globe Awards.

She received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for her performance in the HBO television film The Normal Heart (2014) and had her first regular television role in the first season of the Amazon Prime Video psychological thriller series Homecoming (2018).

8. Sandra Bullock

Sandra Annette Bullock was born on July 26th, 1964. She is an American actress and producer.

The recipient of various accolades, including an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, and three Critics’ Choice Movie Awards, she was the world’s highest-paid actress in both 2010 and 2014.[1][2][3] In 2010, she was named one of Time’s 100 most influential people in the world.

In the Blind Side (2009), Bullock won the Academy Award for Best Actress. She was nominated for the same award for the science fiction thriller Gravity (2013), which ranks as her highest-grossing live-action film to date.

9. Scarlett Johansson

Scarlett Ingrid Johansson was born on November 22nd, 1984. She is an American actress.

She has received various accolades, including a Tony Award and a British Academy Film Award, in addition to nominations for two Academy Awards and five Golden Globe Awards.

10. Jenniffer Lawrence

Jennifer Shrader Lawrence was born on August 15th, 1990. She is an American actress.

Lawrence has received several accolades for various films. Her performances in the romance film Silver Linings Playbook (2012) won her the Academy Award for Best Actress. This made her the second-youngest Best Actress winner at 22.

She won the BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for playing in the black comedy American Hustle (2013). Lawrence also received Golden Globe Awards for both of these films.

 A series of negatively reviewed films, including Passengers (2016) and Red Sparrow (2018), and the subsequent media scrutiny of her choices of roles led to a small break from acting.

She returned in 2021 with the satirical black comedy Don’t Look Up.
