10 Nature Retreats to escape New York City

Breakneck Ridge

While weekend excursions from NYC are always a fantasy in the summer, the desire to get out of town has never been stronger because pandemic restrictions have finally begun to lift. But the age-old issue remains: where should I go, exactly?

You’ve come to the correct spot since we have a selection of vacation options based on your dream holiday. Perhaps all you desire is a day at the beach, or maybe a spa getaway. Perhaps you’d want to go for a trek in the woods or take a leisurely stroll around a 19th-century town. No matter what you’re looking for, we know that these 10 nature retreats are the best escape from the hullabaloo in Ney York City.

1. Woodstock

Despite the fact that the renowned Woodstock music festival took place 40 miles (63 kilometres) away in Bethel, NY, the town’s namesake remains a sanctuary for creative types looking for weekend escapes with a rock’n’roll edge.

The stylish kids from New York City have made their mark, as predicted — search for Graham & Co., which is owned and decorated by Brooklyn-based designers. However, the old-school hippie look lives on in the shape of tie-dyed T-shirts and mild patchouli scents.

2. Breakneck Ridge

Weekend hikes are linked with the West Coast, but that doesn’t mean New Yorkers don’t lace up their sneakers and hit the woods every now and again. Breakneck Ridge is not for the unfit or unadventurous (the first 45 minutes are essentially an all-fours struggle over some extremely difficult terrain), but the sights are well worth the effort.

The prospect of an iced drink and some artisan shopping at the finish line may be enough to motivate you if the glittering, forest-lined Delaware River isn’t enough. Cold Spring Apothecary specializes in small-batch, botanical-based skin, hair, and medical products that you won’t find at CVS.

3. Storm King Art Center

With 500 acres (202 hectares) of ominous, large-scale sculptures, gather some friends, take a picnic, and spend the better part of the day at the Storm King Art Center exploring and finding the greatest modern and contemporary sculptures. It’s just about an hour outside of New York City, and if you plan your visit correctly, you may catch a summer concert or a poetry reading.

4. Fire Island

Summer Fridays are undoubtedly a “thing” in New York when everyone packs up and departs at midday in search of relief from the sweltering city temps. Sure, the Hamptons are the most picturesque coastal choice, but Fire Island, with its tranquil communities and beautiful stretches of protected beach, is the place to go if you need a genuine break from city life.

The barrier island is 32 miles (51 kilometres) long and less than a mile (1.6 kilometres) broad. It’s separated into 17 “communities,” each with its own agenda, ranging from LGBTQ-friendly Cherry Grove to party-loving Kismet and reclusive Atlantique. You’ll have the stunning, wind-whipped beaches to yourself if you visit during the off-season.

5. Delaware River

Before entering the Atlantic Ocean near Cape May, New Jersey, the Delaware River travels 330 miles (531 kilometres) across four states. Some fun-loving geniuses (including the men at Lander’s River Trips) decided to start canoeing and tubing operations along the stretch that arcs through New York’s beautiful Catskills region. Put on a life jacket and choose the rapids route if you’re feeling energetic.

6. Hudson

There are several charming villages along the Hudson River, but none can compare to the town that bears its name. Hudson, New York, has long been a commuting destination for inhabitants of Brooklyn and Manhattan who are tired of big-city turmoil but not big-city cuisine.

Spend a weekend feasting at foodie favourites Red Dot Restaurant & Bar and Fish & Game while staying at the Hudson Milliner, an elegant 19th-century hat store turned boutique guesthouse.

7. North Fork

You’ll wonder why more people don’t make the hour-and-a-half drive to Long Island’s wine area after you arrive on the North Fork peninsula.

Despite the fact that the town’s vineyards focus on sauvignon blanc, riesling, and merlot, rosé enthusiasts haven’t been forgotten — Croteaux Vineyards offers pink tipple sampling. In a quaint 1800s carriage house or (on sunny days) the pebbled courtyard covered by cherry blossom trees, sample its various variety.

8. Dia: Beacon

Dia: Beacon, like the Whitney and MoMA, should be on your cultural bucket list. This historic Nabisco box-printing facility, which is part of the Dia Art Foundation’s constellation of sites, exhibits works from the 1960s to the present.

Installations that were “site-conditioned” to interact with the museum’s architecture and lighting have been featured in previous shows.

9. The Adirondacks

It’s easy to forget that the forest begins where the urban jungle stops. The Adirondacks are a wide, gorgeous, and tranquil area that is ideal for exploring on foot, by boat, or on skis. They also have several well-known lovely camping areas, and Camp Orenda’s canvas huts are ideal for New Yorkers who want to combine nature with a little home comfort.

Rustic design (think hardwood mattresses with soft comforters, tree-stump nightstands, and wood-burning stoves) and easy electrical outlets to keep your iPhone charged and Spotify songs playing are included in each dwelling. Visit Wild Walk while you’re in the area. This elevated route through the vegetation of Tupper Lake dubbed a “High Line for the Forest,” allows visitors up-close interactions with the region’s fascinating trees and plants.

10. Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health

The Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health, located in the picturesque Berkshire countryside, is a wonderful destination for rejuvenation and holistic education. It is known for giving world-class yoga teachers and nutritional training, but it is also the ideal spot to leave city stress behind as the country’s largest retreat facility.

Try the R&R Retreat, which offers a personalized stay with lessons (yoga, meditation, and self-improvement), outdoor activities, and quality leisure.

Are you wondering if going for a retreat is worth it? One of the most significant benefits of attending a retreat is the proximity to nature and its therapeutic powers, which cannot be equalled by a mere vacation.

Being in nature has been found to lower cortisol production, our major stress hormone. Furthermore, clean air, tranquil settings, and plants help you to relax and regenerate, allowing you to return to your life with a fresh start.
