Hawaii is a world-famous holiday destination known for its mix of spectacular volcanic landscapes, balmy tropical temperatures, stunning surfing action, unique wildlife and rich culture.

From its renowned reputation as a tropical paradise, you would think Hawaii is teeming with theme parks and amusement parks, right? People are often surprised to discover that there are no theme parks on any of the islands and no roller coasters.

However, this does not mean that there aren’t recreational facilities and resorts  that provide similar experiences as those in themed amusement parks.  Below are the 10 best amusement parks in Hawaii;

1. Wet ‘n’ Wild Hawaii

Wet’n’Wild Hawaii, formerly Hawaiian Waters Adventure Park, is a Hawaiian water park, located in Kapolei in the City and County of Honolulu on Oahu. It was opened on May 28, 1999, in and occupies 29 acres (120,000 m2) of land.

The park has more than 25 rides and attractions, including an 18-hole high-end miniature golf facility. The miniature golf course features lush tropical landscape, nine ADA-compliant holes, a putting green, surfboard hazards, waterways, waterfall, large ocean and beach area, mock fish and sea turtles, lava rock formations and coral reef displays.

Wet n Wild is currently the only water park in the state of Hawaii.

2. Waikiki Aquarium

The Waikīkī Aquarium is an aquarium in Honolulu, Hawaii, United States. It was founded in March 19th 1904. The aquarium is the second-oldest still-operating public aquarium in the United States, after the New York Aquarium. It is the first in the United States to maintain the chambered nautilus and the first in the world to produce viable Nautilus embryos.

Waikīkī Aquarium is built next to a living coral reef on the Waikīkī shoreline. It is home to more than 3,500 organisms of 490 species of marine plants and animals. It was designated a Coastal Ecosystem Learning Center of the Coastal America Partnership federal program.

3. Polynesian Cultural Center

Polynesian Cultural Center (PCC) is a family-centered cultural tourist attraction and living museum located in Laie, on the northern shore of Oahu, Hawaii. It was opened on October 12, 1963, and occupies 42 acres (17 hectares) of land.

The PCC encompasses eight simulated tropical villages, in which performers demonstrate various arts and crafts from throughout Polynesia. The show features songs and dances that include the hula, tamure, otea, titi torea, haka, poi, meke, tauʻolunga, and Taualuga.

Polynesian Cultural Center is the venue for the annual World Fire Knife Dance Competition, in which contestants display their skill with blazing swords.

4. Sea Life Park

Sea Life Park Hawaii is a marine mammal park, bird sanctuary and aquarium in Waimānalo near Makapuʻu Point, north of Hanauma Bay on the island of Oahu in Hawaii, United States. It was opened in 1964.

The park exhibitions and facilities include; The Hawaiian Reef Aquarium which is a 300,000-US-gallon (1,100 m3) tank that is home to more than 2000 reef animals, Hawaiian Ocean Theater which is the venue for the main shows, which includes dolphins, penguins, and sea lions, Penguin Habitat which is home to the park’s penguins, Bird Sanctuary which is home to many wild marine birds most of which came to the sanctuary sick or injured and Hawaiian Monk Seal Habitat where visitors see these native animals, and interact with the trainers before and after the shows.

Sea Life Park allows visitors to interact with the animals by swimming with dolphins, sea lions, and rays, taking a sea safari in the aquarium, and feeding the sea turtles.

5. Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve

Hanauma Bay is a marine embayment formed within a tuff ring and located along the southeast coast of the Island of Oʻahu in the Hawaii Kai neighborhood of East Honolulu, in the Hawaiian Islands. It is both a Nature Preserve and a Marine Life Conservation District.

At the park, visitors are required by law to refrain from mistreating marine animals or from touching, walking, or otherwise having contact with coral heads, which appear much like large rocks on the ocean floor.

Hanauma Bay is known for its abundance of Green sea turtles, Chelonia mydas, known as Honu and also for its abundance of parrotfish. 

6. Maui Ocean Center

The Maui Ocean Center is an aquarium and oceanography center located in Maalaea, Hawaii, on the island of Maui. It was opened on March 13, 1998, on 3 acres (1.2 ha) facility, making it the largest living tropical reef aquarium in the Western Hemisphere.

Their exhibits include colorful displays of live coral reef habitats, diverse collections of endemic Hawaiian fish species, and up-close viewing of sea turtles, stingrays, sharks, and various sea creatures.

Maui Ocean Center is the only public aquarium on Maui and exclusively displays marine life found in Hawaiian waters.

7. Kualoa Ranch

Kualoa is a 4,000-acre (1,600 ha) private nature reserve and working cattle ranch. It is about 24 miles (39 km) from Honolulu, and 32 miles (51 km) from Haleiwa. The ranch consists of 3 valleys: Kaʻaʻawa Valley, Kualoa Valley, and Hakipuʻu Valley.

The valley was sacred to ancient Hawaiians from the 13th to the 18th century, as Chief Laʻa-mai-kahiki settled there after visiting Kauaʻi before returning to Tahiti. It was also the site of the sacred drums of Kapahuʻula and Kaʻahuʻulapunawai as well as the sacred Hill of Kauakahiakahoʻowaha, the key to the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Oʻahu.

8. Aulani

Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa, is a beachside resort hotel at the Ko Olina Resort in Kapolei, Hawaii on the island of Oahu. The word Aulani in Hawaiian can be loosely translated as “the place that speaks for the great ones” or “with deep messages”. When the word is used as a name, it can mean “message from the chief”.

The Aulani isn’t an amusement park. It’s a resort. But it does have many amusement park-like and water park-like qualities. The pool has a few waterslides, a lazy river, and a splash zone, it’s basically a condensed version of a waterpark.

Enjoy the island-inspired food, cultural Hawaiian activities, and the luau show.

9. Coral Crater Adventure Park

Coral Crater Adventure Park is a 35-acre outdoor adventure center located in West Oahu. The park features 6 zip lines, an aerial adventure tower, two 50 foot climbing walls, a king swing, a freefall, rappelling, tactical laser gun shooting, and side-by-side ATVs.

The park is renowned for its 60-foot Adventure Tower, which is the only one of its kind in Hawaii. The tower has 18 challenge elements, and you’ll navigate through the ropes, walk across wobbly bridges and surf on a rail.

10. Fishpipe Hawaii

The Fishpipe is an amusement ride consisting of an inflated, rugby ball-shaped, transparent, two skinned ball suspended between two large wheels on a frame. Up to 3 people can enter the ball, water is added, and the entire ball is spun in place at speeds up to 11 feet per minute. The Fishpipe riders’ slide (or can attempt to surf) on the inner surface, which is made slippery due to the water.

There are only 12 Fishpipes in existence on the planet, 2 are on the island of Maui, HI and 3 are in the Outdoor Gravity Park in Pigeon Forge, TN United States.
