New York is the hub of cultural diversity and anything uniquely talented. It therefore doesn’t come as a surprise that some of the most talented fashion designers in the industry are actually from New York.

I mean, look no further than New York fashion week every year and it will blow your mind how creative and imaginative folks from this city actually are.

Let’s therefore look at some of the most talented fashion designers that are actually from New York.

1. Michael Kors

Michael Kors- Author; CHRISTOPHER MACSURAK-

Born as Karl Anderson Jr in August 9th, 1959, Michael David Kors is an American fashion designer. He was born in Long Island, New York and is currently the honorary chairman and chief creative officer of his brand, Michael Kors.

The Michael Kors brand typically sells men’s and women’s ready-to-wear, accessories, watches, jewelry, footwear, and fragrance. He was actually the first women’s ready-to-wear designer for the French house Celine, between the years, 1997 to 2003.

In January 2019, the brand changed its name to Capri Holdings Limited  and under this holding, Kors joined up with other prominent fashion designers: Jimmy Choo and Versace. Thus these three household names became the three founder led brands under Capri Holdings Limited.

In addition to his many accomplishments, Kors was also a judge on the Emmy-nominated reality television program ‘Project Runway,’ that aired on Bravo for five seasons.

2. Donna Karan

Donna Karan born in October 1948 is popularly known as DK. She is an American fashion designer and creator of DKNY (Donna Karan New York) clothing label. Her passion for anything fashion isn’t a mistake given how her mother was a model who worked in Chester Weinberg’s showroom and her father was a tailor and entrepreneur of sewing things. So designing was something she literally grew up with.

After graduating from  college, Karan ended up working for Anne Klein, and even became the head of the Anne Klein design-team, where she remained until 1984, when now she launched her own line,  Donna Karan label.

Karan ended up becoming very well known for  ‘Essentials‘ line. The brand initially started odd by offering seven easy pieces centered around the bodysuit which could be mixed and matched, thus creating a fully integrated wardrobe with her First Collection in 1985.

Karan always maintained that the designs she will make are clothes like jersey dresses and opaque Lycra tights that she could wear herself also. This kind of set her apart because she designs clothes with her in mind too.

Moreover, Karan’s  pretty awarded too. Some of her awards include: Coty American Fashion Critics’ Award in 1977 and 1982, Induction into the Coty Hall of fame in 1984, Menswear Designer of the year in 1992, Womenswear designer of the year in 1990 and 1996, Golden Plate Award of the American Academy of Achievement in 1994 and Life Achievement Award in 2004. Pretty impressive, huh?!

3. Tommy Hilfiger

Thomas Jacob Hilfiger is another American fashion designer and the founder of Tommy Hilfiger Corporation. He was born in 1951.

Right after starting his career by co-founding a chain of jeans and fashion stores that were known as ‘People’s Place’ in upstate New York in the 1970s, he began designing clothing for his own  menswear line in the 1980s.

 This company later expanded into women’s clothing and various luxury items such as perfumes then went public in 1992.

Tommy’s collections are usually influenced by the fashion of music cultures and basically marketed in the grounds of the music industry, featuring rnb celebrities like Aaliyah in the 90s.

Tommy Hilfiger also has so many awards among which include Golden Plate Award in 1996, Men’s Fragrance of the year in 1997 fir the fragrance, ‘Tommy,’  Germany International designer of the year in 2002, UNESCO support Award for philanthropic efforts in 2009 among so many others.

4. Felisha Noel

Felisha Noel is the founder of the fashion brand, Fe Noel which is all about making life beautiful through fashion. The label’s mantra is: “Eat well, travel often, and dress to inspire!” Being a deeply cultured woman, having being influenced by he Grenadian heritage, Felisha has acquired the ability to mash up culture and glamour and infuse it with both sensuality and sensibility.

Fe Noel mostly focuses on womenswear with an objective of helping women be able to embrace their femininity more. Apart from fashion designing she is also into philanthropy work where she runs a programme encouraging young girls who are particularly passionate about entrepreneurship.

5. Christopher John Rodgers

Christopher is based in Brooklyn, New York and always credits ‘the nifty little DM button’ for jumpstarting his fashion career. He is actually the winner of the 2019 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund, which goes to show how talented he actually is to be recognized by an elite company like vogue.

Very prominent celebrities have actually worn some of his designs. For eample, Lizzo wore one of his neon green frocks which had matching fluorescent feathers to the MTV movie and TV awards and Michele Obama’s sparkly green suit that really disturbed the internet one time was Christopher’s design. Other celebrities include Gabrielle Union, Priyanka, Tracee Ellis Ross and many more.

Oh! You should also know that the very chic outfit Kamala Harris wore in their inauguration was all Christopher’s work. Goes to show how this young 25- year old designer is making strides with no apologies. Good for him!

6. Catherine Holstein

Remember in 2019 when Katie Holmes was photographed hailing in New York while wearing a cashmere cardigan and bra set? The way she ate up that look immediately went viral and within minutes, the outfit was selling like crazy thus earning Holmes the title, ‘accidental influencer.’ So who was the brain behind that look? None other than Catherine Holstein folks under her very popular brand, Khaite.

Just a bit of background, Catherine moved to New York in order to attend Parsons School of Design and within no time, her career skyrocketed when The cahmapion of young designers, Julie Gilhart, picked up her junior thesis for Barneys New York. Her womenswear line went on to sell at over 40 stores worldwide thus gaining the popularity that even Holmes could wear her designs.

Between 2009 and 2014, she additionally gained experience while working as a design director and consultant for brands like Gap, Vera Wang, Maiyet, and The Elder Statesman. What’s even more impressive, Holstein has been a CFDA Member since 2019.

7.  Brandon Maxwell

Born in 1984, Brandon Maxwell is an American fashion designer, a television personality, director, and photographer. He is also the founder and creative director of Brandon Maxwell, which is a luxury women’s ready-to-wear label.

Before launching his womenswear label, Maxwell made entrance into the fashion industry as a stylist. In 2009, he began assisting Deborah Afshani, followed by Nicola Formichetti in 2010 where he even introduced Lady Gaga since Formichetti was her stylist at the time. Then later in 2012, he officially took the role of Gaga’s fashion director.

He has been successful in his career seeing that he even appeared as a judge on the 2019 re- launch of Project Runway. In 2021 again, he was named creative director for two exclusive and high end fashion brands for Walmart. In his role as a director, Maxwell oversees four different seasonal collections annually for Free Assembly and Scoop.

8. Marc Jacobs

Marc Jacobs is an American fashion designer and the head designer for his own fashion label, known as Marc Jacobs, and formerly Marc by Marc Jacobs, a diffusion line, that produced for approximately 15 years, before being discontinued after the 2015 fall/winter collection.

The brand did so well that before being discontinued it had over 200 retail stores in 80 countries. Some of his achievement include being director of Louis Vuitton between 1997 and 2014, recognized as the 100 most influential people in the world and also listed as number 14 in most powerful gay men and women in America. He has also gotten an award of best womenswear designer of the year in 2016.

Additionally, Jacobs is still doing so much with his brand. At the moment, he has an ongoing project called, “Protect The Skin You’re In”, where celebrities pose nude,  for T-shirts in order to raise awareness about melanoma.

9. Rosie Assoulin

Rosie Assoulin first started working at Adam Lippes, Oscar de la Renta and Lanvin before launching her label in 2014  that made her actually get the CFDA Swarovski Award for Womenswear just a year later.

She’s daring in her designs  where she plays around with volume and bold color in order to create pieces that are glamorous yet functional at the same time. 

The Rosie Assoulin clothing brand was first launched in 2012 and since then, it has managed to make a name for itself. Assoulin eveningwear for instance is a look to die for to be honest. It is quite ideal for big occasions, black tie parties or any other event taht basically requires you to shine and simply glamarous, classy and sophisticated.

10. Tony Burch

Tory Burch is another  American fashion designer based in New York. She is the Executive Chairman and Chief Creative Officer of her own brand known as, Tory Burch LLC. Among some of her greatest achievement in her career is her being listed as the 88th most powerful woman in the world by Forbes in 2020.

After graduating from college, Tory moved to New York City, where she worked for Zoran, a very prominent Yugoslavian designer, then followed by Harper’s Bazaar magazine. Thereafter she  moved into public relations and advertising positions at Vera Wang, Polo Ralph Lauren, and Loewe when Narciso Rodriguez was there. This is basically where journey to greatness started.

As of 2020, her brand has really blown up and now it has over 300 stores worldwide, with over 3000 department and specialty stores.
