Top 10 Unbelievable Facts about the Area 51

Area 51 is a regular name of a classified facility under the administration of the United States Air Force(USAF). It is located in Lincoln County, Nevada, United States. In particular southern Nevada, about 85 miles northwest of Las Vegas.

The facility is based within the NTTR-Nevada Test and Training Range. The official name of Area 51 is Homey Airport or Groom Lake, -a salt flat that borders the airfield of the facility.

Information on the activities of Area 51 is top secret and is unknown to the public. So, Area 51 has raised a lot of speculation and conspiracy theories among the public.

Mythologies of aliens and UFO(Unidentified Flying Objects) existence in Area 51 are generational concerns. According to USAF, the area is used as an open training range.

The USAF obtained control of Area 51 in 1995 to conduct flight testing. The Lockheed U-2 was their pioneer flight test project. Other projects that were conducted in Area 51 are Lockheed A-12, D-21, and F-117(Lockheed Have Blue).

Though Area 51’s surrounding is a common tourist destination, Area 51 is guarded against would-be invaders. Get to know incredible truths about Area 51 in these top 10 point listings.

1. The reason Area 51 is named so is unclear

The name Area 51 is believed to be from the numbering grid of an Atomic Energy Commission (AEC). The grid system numbered 1 to 30. Thus, Area 51 is not part of the AEC’s grid system but being next to Area 15 sparked the name Area 51. The AEC saw it unlikely that they would expand their grid that far so they used the number 51.

Area 51 has several nicknames. It goes by the names Dreamland, Paradise Ranch, Watertown Strip, and the Box. The official name of Area 51 is Homey Airport or Groom Lake.

Government officials refer to the base as an operating facility near Groom Lake when addressing public concerns. The recently declassified documents use the name Area 51 in some cases.

2. Area 51 is a real location, not fiction

The secret Nevada base is located in southern Nevada at Groom Lake. It lies in rectangular space of 23 by 25 miles making it part of what is known as the Groom box.

The base has seen expansion from the original rectangular measurements of six by ten miles. The area covered by the military base has its airspace restricted.

A view of Area 51 can be seen on Google Earth by typing Area 51 on the field marked fly to. The map fixes everything else.

Area 51 on the north latitude lies on 37degrees 14 minutes while on the west longitude it’s positioned at 115 degrees 48 minutes.

3. Area 51 airspace is restricted and nicknamed the Red Square

The airspace above the military base is restricted to flights that originate from the facility. No commercial flights or military planes that are not from the base are allowed to fly over Area 51.

The airspace is identified as R-4808N and is classified as a buffer zone. Those that commute to the facility use Boeing 727 or 737 which are unmarked for anonymity. The terminal is at Las Vegas McCarran International Airport.

McCarran terminal is owned by EG&G which is contracted by the Defense. Pilots use a code to alert Area 51’s control tower of their presence in the buffer zone. Any pilot that crosses into Area 51 can face imprisonment, dismissal, or court-martial as a result.

Area 51’s airspace is nicknamed Red Square. The name was inspired by a plane crash near the military facility in April 1984. Robert M. Bond a U.S. Air Force Lt. Gen. at the time died in the crush. The Air Force claimed that the jet was a modified test plane.

The Press argued the plane was a Soviet plane. There are no facts to substantiate the claims whether the U.S. obtained from the Soviets or captured the plane. Thus, the Press dubbed Area 51, the Red Square.

4. America’s top-secret military base, Area 51 was revealed to the public in 2013

Area 51 started operations in the 1950s but its public acknowledgment took place on 25 June 2013. The CIA admitted Area 51 existed and declassified documents that contained its history and purpose.

This happened through the Freedom of Information Act(FOIA). The request was filed in 2005 by Jeffrey T. Richelson, who was a National Security Archives senior fellow.

5. The Area 51 launched projects are several

Area 51 being a plane testing facility has launched known projects such as the U-2 spy plane and A-12 OXCART. The SR-71 Blackbird, Have Blue, and Tactic Blue are also inclusive.

The pioneer of 3D virtual reality processing, assembly, and design was a Boeing Bird of Prey between 1992 to 1999. Boeing revealed its existence in 2002. They claimed to have built only one of that kind.

Other speculated projects in Area 51 are TR-3A Black Manta, Aurora, and Brilliant. The Buzzard(Mothership), and Blackstar are part of the projects as well.

6. The military base, Area 51 is heavily guarded

Area 51 is classified as a Military Operating Area(MOA) by the military. The borders are not fenced but security is observed around its perimeter. Some poles mark the perimeter of the military base.

The poles are marked with clear signs of what is expected around the facility. The signs forbid photography or filming in the area, trespassing is forbidden and may result in fines.

Those that persist in trespassing are warned that the security is allowed to use deadly force. Helicopters are at times allowed to hover low over trespassers to harass them.

The perimeter of Area 51 is patrolled by guards that are dressed in desert camouflage and they patrol in pairs. Sensors are fitted around its borders to enhance the facility’s security.

7. The Internet Raided the Area 51 in 2019

The Area 51 raid or Storm Area 51 originated from an American Facebook user, Matty Roberts on June 27, 2019. Roberts encouraged people to show up for the event as their numbers would deter security forces.

About two million responded to attending the event. Only an estimated 150 people showed up at the secret facility. The quest for the raid was to search for extraterrestrial life that could be concealed in the area.

The Air Force through their spokesperson, Grace Manock warned against the raid plan. They discouraged people from attempting to invade the military property.

Two other music festivals took place around Area 51. The music events had 1500 attendees as reported by the local law enforcement and the state. The festivals were: Storm Area 51 Basecamp in Hiko, Nevada, and Alienstock in Rachel, Nevada.

8. Area 51 was first mentioned by a U.S. President in 2013

U.S. President Barack Obama was the first president to mention Area 51 in public. He cracked the joke on 8 December 2013 during the 36th Annual Kennedy Center Honors. This was in honor of actress Shirley MacLaine. Shirley maintained her belief in the existence of extraterrestrial life and UFOs.

9. The Aliens at Area 51 is a folklore

Conspiracy theorists argue that there are aliens linked to Area 51. Some claim an alien spacecraft that crashed in Roswell was taken to Area 51 for examination.

Others take it further claiming there are tunnels in the base laid underground full of alien technology and they connect to other secret places. Yet, the Air Force has denied any alien activity associated with Area 51.

10. UFO existence in Area 51 may be a mythology

The flying saucer is a common term coined after Kenneth Arnold claimed he spotted objects flying in a V formation. On June 24, 1947, Arnold was flying over Washington state in his private jet as a pilot. He described the flying objects as a saucer would behave if skipped across water.

The July 1947 crash of an unidentified object near Roswell saw the army declare identifying remains of a UFO. The press statement made by Gen. William Blanchard, of the Roswell Army Air Field, was retracted. The Army announced that it was a weather balloon and not a UFO crash cited.

Area 51 is a test facility so planes are spotted over its airspace many times. This may be confused with UFO as the planes on the test may be exotic or unidentifiable. Critics hold those claim citations of UFOs coincide with the times the facility planes arrive or leave the military base.

Area 51 has much more association with extraterrestrial life than its purpose as claimed by the military of testing planes. This has seen films, music, television shows, novels, and video games based on the theme of extraterrestrial life. The X-Files (TV show) and Independence Day movie depicts the conspiracy theory of UFOs.
