10 Of The Scariest Kansas Serial Killers


 

Kansas is considered a really beautiful state but it has still had its share of harboring famous serial killers just like any other state. These serial killers have continued to cement their place in history throughout the years. They have left tragic and terrifying marks on the state and generally the nation in the way they conducted their murders either by strangulation, shooting, poisoning, or stabbing. Until today these serial killers have continued to be the topic of most crime TV shows, podcasts, books, and news. Their heinous acts never went unpunished, but instead, they were captured and severely punished by the law. Today in this article we have shared a few scariest serial killers in Kansas.  

1. Dennis Rader

Dennis Rader also known as 鈥淏TK鈥 which stands for 鈥渂ind, torture, kill,鈥 was the most famous serial killer in Kansas City who killed at least 10 people between 1974 and 1991. He mostly targeted women at their homes and he would suffocate them with a plastic bag or strangle them with a ligature. Dennis stole underwear, licenses, and personal items from his victims. He described the details of his crimes by taunting letters to the police and the media. Dennis was arrested eventually in 2005 and is currently serving ten consecutive life sentences at the El Dorado Correctional Facility.

2. Richard Grisso

Richard Grissom admitted to murdering three women who had been reported missing. The bodies of the three women who had been murdered over eight days in 1989 have never been recovered to date. Richard had also previously been arrested for the murder of his neighbour. In 1990, he was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment. He is still serving his sentence at the El Dorado Correctional facility until 2093 when he will be eligible for parole.

3. John Edward Robinson

John Edward Robinson also dubbed “the Internet’s first serial killer,” was a notable serial killer who lured most of his victims via online connections. He was also a kidnapper, con man, forger, and embezzler who was convicted of murdering at least eight women between 1984 and 1999. Robinson currently remains on death row at the El Dorado Correctional Facility.

4. Robert Berdella

Robert Berdella also known as the 鈥淜ansas City Butcher鈥 was a scary serial killer who kidnapped, tortured, raped, and murdered at least six young men between 1984 and 1987. Berdella’s motive behind all his murders was for sexual sadism, possession, and control. He said that all his murders were some of his darkest fantasies that came to reality. He eventually pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life imprisonment without possibility of parole in 1988. In October 1992, Robert unfortunately died while serving his sentence at the Missouri State Penitentiary.

5. Larry Eyler

Larry Eyler was also named the “Highway Killer,” because most of his victim’s bodies were being disposed of across several midwestern states in locations near the Interstate Highway System. Larry is responsible for the deaths of at least twenty-one teenage boys.  He committed all these murders between 1982 and 1984. Although Larry is mostly linked to Indiana, some of his murders took place in Kansas City. In 1994, he died of AIDS-related complications while detained on death row.

6. Chester Turner

Chester Turner also known as 鈥淭he South Kansas City Serial Killer,鈥 was a gruesome serial killer who murdered and sexually assaulted at least ten women between 1989 and 2003. His targets were mostly women in prostitution or drugs. Turner had spent most of his adult life homeless and sometimes in prison for various crimes. On July 10, 2007, he was sentenced to death for the ten murders he had committed. While in prison Turner was also linked to several unsolved murders and rapes. He is currently on death row at San Quentin State Prison.

7. The Bloody Benders

The Bender family were famous serial killers in Labette County, Kansas. Their murder spree took place between May 1871 to December 1872. They included; John Bender, his wife Elvira, their son John Jr., and their daughter Kate. The Bloody Benders ran a remote inn and they killed at least a dozen travelers and scattered their body parts throughout the County. When they were linked to the disappearance of the travelers they escaped out of town and were never seen or heard again.

8. Frazier Glenn Miller Jr.

Frazier Glenn Miller Jr. was a domestic terrorist, leader of the White Patriot Party, a perennial candidate for public office, and an advocate of white nationalism, white separatism, Odinism, and antisemitism. On April 13, 2014, Frazier entered the Overland Park Jewish Community Center in Overland Park, Kansas, and began shooting. Three people ended up being shot at the scene of the crime. Miller was arrested and found guilty in the Overland Park shooting of one count of capital murder, three counts of attempted murder, and assault and possession of weapons. He was sentenced to death on November 10, 2015, and he died on death row on May 3, 2021.

9. Charles Manson

Charles Manson was a musician, criminal, and the cult leader of the Mansion Family which was based in California and operated in the late 1960s. In 1970 members of his cult killed at least nine people from different states, including Sharon Tate, and Leno and Rosemary LaBianca, who were from Kansas.

Earlier, Charles had spent most of his life in prison and had gathered his cult members while he was a musician and a songwriter in the Los Angeles music industry. He however denied being involved in the murders or instructing anyone to commit the murders. He died on November 19, from Cardiac arrest while serving his sentence.

10. John Henry Horton

John Henry Horton also dubbed 鈥淭he South Kansas City Vampire,鈥 is a former school janitor who murdered a Prairie Village teenager, Lizabeth Wilson. In July 1974 Wilson disappeared, as she walked from Prairie Village swimming pool. Horton used chloroform to drug the girl so that he could sexually assault her. Her body was later found in Lenexa. In 2003, prosecutors charged Horton with first-degree murder in Lizabeth鈥檚 death. John was also convicted of several other murders and was sentenced to life in prison.
