Janet Jackson is the youngest of her siblings, as such one would expect her to remain in the shadow of her elders who had established their name in the music industry. However, she rose and built a name for herself. She has had a successful career despite challenges such as the Super Bowl wardrobe malfunction scandal which she handled elegantly. Moreover, she holds different titles; singer, actress, performer, dancer and songwriter. Here are ten remarkable facts about the Princess of Pop.

1.      She is the youngest of her siblings

Janet Jackson was born on May 16, 1996, in Gary, Indiana. She was the youngest of nine siblings namely; Rebbie, Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, LaToya, Marlon, Randy, and Michael. Her father, Joseph had successfully managed her brothers, the Jackson 5, to rock stages. Therefore, he did not immediately notice his daughter’s musical talent till later.

2.      She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2019

She followed her brothers’ footsteps though with a different trajectory and she managed to add this accolade to her impressive catalogue of accomplishments. Her brothers had been inducted more than two decades before her in 1997. Her brother, Michael was also inducted on his own in 2001. She was very emotional during this induction ceremony mentioning her brothers’ induction and her getting the same recognition decades later.

3.      She did not aspire to be a musician.

As a child, Janet Jackson aspired to be an entertainment lawyer or a horse racing jockey because of her love of horses. Amidst these plans, she wanted to support her dreams by acting. However, her father discovered her talent after hearing a recording she had made of herself. She attributes her musical passion to her father, who encouraged her to be a great performer. Janet has talked of missing out on the fun things that kids do, due to her busy schedule as a performer.

4.      She had her first child at age of 50

Janet has a successful career and has dedicated her life to music and honing her skills to deliver the best to her fans. In 2016, she and her then-husband William al Sana announced they were expecting their first child together. Apart from being a top performer, she is a mother to a son, who she has managed to shield from the media.

5.      Her first marriage was annulled

She eloped with her childhood friend James DeBarge when she was 18 years old. This was an act of taking the reins over her life, from her father. The marriage lasted three months, due to James’ addiction issues, and was annulled thereafter.

6.      She faced extreme critics over the Super Bowl incident

Following the wardrobe malfunction that left Janet Jackson exposed more than was intended, she received hate and harsh critics. She apologized but the incident still garnered more attention than necessary. The incident saw Jackson being blacklisted in the industry. She was not allowed to attend the 46th Grammy Awards ceremony. However, Justin Timberlake was allowed to carry on with little effect on his career. She released an album two months after the incident and it did not receive fair critics, since people associated it with the incident. It still garnered Platinum-certified status after one month regardless of the efforts to blacklist her. She was blacklisted from radio and music channels even after the release of two other albums.

7.      She started off as an actress

Janet Jackson featured in her family’s show, The Jacksons which she left to star in Good Times, as Penny Gordon. She impressed the director and was cast as the lead. She went on to feature in different TV shows and films. She has taken up different movie roles such as Tyler Perry’s, “Why Did I Get Married?” and its sequel “Why Did I Get Married Too?”, and “The Nutty Professor”. She took up more acting roles after the blacklist effected on her and caused a derail in her music career.

Despite facing criticism on her second album, Rhythm Nation 1814, she pushed for its release. She was advised to retain the same features of her precious album, Control since it had done so well. However, Janet decided to take the risk and fortunately it received a great reception. The album addressed social injustices while retaining the pop. Janet Jackson throughout her career has faced rebuke from critics over the level of carnality portrayed in her videos. She is a performer and she does not shy from putting on a great show.

9.      She has a soprano vocal range

Janet Jackson’s instrument is her vocals, a mezzo-soprano range. She has been compared to Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey, however, where she lacks in vocal prowess she compensates with outstanding showmanship. She delivers outstanding studio-recorded albums and great stage performances.

10.  She is a great influence on Pop music history

She is renowned as the original princess of pop and has paved the way for other female pop stars. Jackson has influenced artists such as Jennifer Lopez (JLo), who was her backup dancer before starting her own musical career. She has been named by artists such as Rihanna, Britney Spears, and Brandy among others who have described her as an inspiration. Her journey so far has been full of drama, stages and dazzle performances. She is indeed an icon.
