10 Things You Didn’t Know About The Moab Murders


 

The Moab murders involved a couple, Kylen Schulte and Crystal Turner who were killed in Moab, Utah, in the United States of America. Kylen was born on 5th September 1996, while Crystal was born on 30th August 1982, and had met on the Faux Falls hiking trail in 2016. They later found themselves working together at the La Quinta Inn & Suites.

They began dating in 2019, and in April 2021, the two were married in an intimate ceremony in a treehouse that is located at Crystal’s home in Arkansas. The women had endured a painful past which gave them a unique bond. They had overcome drug addiction, sexual violence, and the loss of close family members.

On the night of 13th August 2021, Kylen and Crystal were seen for the last at a bar in Moab. The two never shied from showing how deeply they were in love and that night, no one was following them after coming from the bar. However, the two were never seen three days later which became a major concern that made Schulte’s father call their local friend.

Schulte’s father revealed that the two moved camp because of a “creeper dude” who scared them at their initial camp place. On 18th August 2021, the friend discovered the remains of Kylen and Crystal who had been murdered by gunshots. In December 2022, a suspect, Adam Pinkusiewicz was cited as the murderer but the case was closed after he committed suicide.

1. The Victims of the Murders were Two Women who were Married to each other

The Moab murders victims were two women, 24-year-old Kylen Schulte, and 38-year-old Crystal Turner who were married to each other. Kylen Schulte had met with Crystal Turner in 2016 on the Faux Falls hiking trail. They then met again at the La Quinta Inn & Suites where they both worked.

In 2019, Kylen and Crystal began dating which later turned into marriage in 2021. Their marriage ceremony was intimate and took place in a treehouse located at her home (Crystal’s home) in Arkansas. What bonded them closer was their past experiences of overcoming drug addiction, sexual violence, and the loss of close family members.

2. Kylen and Crystal were on a Road Trip and had Planned on Visiting Several Destinations

Before they met their deaths, Kylen Schulte and Crystal Turner had been on a road trip in the Western United States. The two had sent camp at Moab before they continued with their journeys.

It is believed that Kylen and Crystal had planned to visit several other interesting places as they camped in Moab. They had planned to visit several national parks including the Arches National Park in Moab.

3. The Couple had Complained of a “Creeper Camper” next to them

Kylen and Crystal had camped at the La Sal Mountains near Moab. They had traveled with their pet rabbit known as Ruth. Before they went missing, the two had made a distressed concern about someone who had camped next to them.

Kylen and Crystal had told their friends and Schulte’s father that they had met a “creeper camper” at the location they were camping. Their distress call was that the camper had “uncomfortably moved closer to them”. The two had made a joke that if they were never had from, they should be looked for.

4. Kylen and Crystal were Last Seen Happy in a Bar before their Bodies were Found

On 13th August 2021, Kylen Schulte and Crystal Turner were seen for the last time at a bar in Moab. They were last seen at around 9:30 PM when witnesses gave various details about that night.

Witnesses revealed that the women were happy and described them as being deeply in love and only concentrating on themselves. No one had followed them in and out of the bar before they went missing.

5. A Friend of the Couple Discovered Their Bodies while on Call with Schulte’s Father

Things turned worse as the couple never contacted anyone for three days. A local friend of Kylen and Crystal then received a call from Schulte’s father who lived in Montana. Schulte’s father informed the friend that the couple had moved their campsite after making the concerned about the creeper camper who scared them.

On 18th August 2021, the friend went out to look for Kylen and Crystal with the hopes of finding them. However, as she was on phone with Schulte’s father, she stumbled upon the remains of Kylen Schulte. She called the authorities immediately.

6. The Friend of the Couple Feared for her Safety after Discovering the Body of Kylen

At the mountain’s campsite, a friend of the couple stumbled upon the body of Kylen Schulte in their camp. She called out to the authorities immediately as she did not continue with the search for Crystal Turner. The friend told reporters that she feared for her safety after she discovered the body of Schulte making her not continue with the search for Turner.

7. Both Women were Found Undressed from the Waist Down

After police officers were alerted of the homicides of Kylen and Crystal, they arrived at the scene to conduct their investigations. The friend had found the remains of Kylen only while the remains of Turner were found after the arrival of the police.

Both remains of the bodies were found near each other in a creek close to the campsite. The two women were undressed from the waist down, however, there were no reports on whether they were sexually assaulted before their murders.

8. The Ladies had been Shot Dead Multiple Times

A Camera that was at the campsite had captured screams probably from the two women when they were being murdered. The bodies of Kylen and Crystal had visible gunshot wounds. They had been shot multiple times on their backs, sides, and chests. The couple died from the gunshot wounds they got from the incident.

9. The Suspect of the Moab Murders Committed Suicide using the Same Gun

As investigations continued, police discovered that a man known as Pinkusiewicz was linked to the murders. The camera footage from the campsite had caught a black Toyota Yaris registered to Pinkusiewicz leaving the scene.

Pinkusiewicz had fled to Waterloo where some of his family members were staying. At Waterloo, the suspect committed suicide using the same firearm that was used to murder Kylen and Crystal. The case was closed in December 2022.

10. A Friend of the Murderer Revealed that he had Confessed Before Killing Himself

Investigators revealed that Pinkusiewicz had confessed to having committed the Moab Murders before he killed himself. Pinkusiewicz had divulged critical information to Rigby, a man he was dating.

Rigby told investigators that Pinkusiewicz had told him he had killed two women in Utah. He provided key details which were consistent with the crime scenes. Questioned why he never came out and gave the information, he responded by stating that he was afraid of Pinkusiewicz and was not aware he was dead.

 

The Moab murders were thought to have targeted the LGBTQ community but the local authorities disputed these claims. People were not happy with the local authorities’ response as they claimed that they were trying to woo tourists to their locality. The families of Kylen and Crystal held funeral ceremonies for their kin.
