10 Things you Need to Know about the Manson Murders


 

The Manson Murders, with the most famous being the Tate-LaBianca murders, were a series of murders that were carried out by members of the Manson Family. These murders happened from August 8th to 10th, 1969 in Los Angeles, and. The Manson Murders were carried out under the direction of Tex Watson and Charles Manson.

Six people were killed in the series of these murders. They included pregnant actress Sharon Tate (with her unborn child) alongside her companions Jay Sebring, Abigail Folger, and Wojciech Frykowski as well as Steven Parent.

After the first killings, the family also killed a Supermarket executive, Leno LaBianca, and his wife Rosemary. They were at their home in the Los Feliz section of Los Angeles.

Manson was a cult leader and aspiring musician who had tried to land a deal with record producer Terry Melcher. Atkins, Krenwinkel, Manson, Van Houten, and Watson were all tried and convicted for their roles in the Tate-LaBianca murders.

Originally, each defendant was sentenced to death. However, in People v. Anderson, the California Supreme Court ruled that the state鈥檚 then-current death penalty laws were unconstitutional. Here are the 10 Things you Need to Know about the Manson Murders:

1. The Manson Family was Cultic and Led by Charles Manson

The Manson Family (which was also known as the Family among its members) was a commune, gang, and cult. It was led by its criminal head, Charles Manson, and operated in California in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

This group had about 100 members who led an unconventional lifestyle full of crime. They frequently used psychoactive drugs such as Benzedrine (amphetamine) and hallucinogens such as LSD which led them to commit these heinous acts.

2. Young Women from the Manson Family were Used to Carry out the Murders

The Manson Family members were not straight-thinking youths as they were manipulated easily by Charles Manson. The majority of the members of the Manson Family were young women.

These young women came from middle-class backgrounds, and a number of them were attracted to the gang by their hippie culture and communal living. They were then radicalized by the teachings of Manson.

The Manson Family鈥檚 group member, Susan Atkins who was one of their tough thugs was convinced that Manson was a manifestation of Jesus Christ. They also believed in the prophecies by Charles about an imminent apocalyptic race war.

3. The First Murders Order from Charles Manson was to Make them Gruesome

On the night of 8th August 1969, Charles Manson sent Tex Watson alongside Susan Atkins, Linda Kasabian, and Patricia Krenwinkel on a mission. They were sent to 10050 Cielo Drive to a house with orders to totally destroy everyone inside and make it gruesome. Charles Manson ordered the women to follow what Tex Watson instructed them to do.

Occupants of the house included pregnant movie actress Sharon Tate, Jay Sebring, Abigail Folger, and Wojciech Frykowski as well as Steven Parent. The caretaker of the property, William Garretson was also present in the property during the night of these murders.

4. Stephen Parent was the First to be Killed on the Property鈥檚 Driveway

Watson scaled a telephone pole near the gate and cut off the phone line to the house to prevent any distress calls. The group walked back up to the house after they parked their car at the bottom of the hill that led to the estate.

After gaining access, Watson ordered the women to lie in the bushes as headlights approached them from within the property. He then stepped out and ordered the driver, Steven Parent, to stop.

Steven had gone to visit William Garretson, the property鈥檚 caretaker, who lived in the guest house. Watson pointed a. 22-caliber revolver at the lad who begged him not to hurt him and promised not to say anything.

However, Watson lunged at Parent with a knife, severing tendons and ripping the boy鈥檚 watch off his wrist. He then shot him four times in the chest and abdomen. Steven was killed in the front seat of his white 1965 AMC Ambassador coupe. Watson then directed the women to assist him to push the car off the driveway to avoid blowing their cover.

5. Tate Pleaded to have Her Life Spared to See Her Baby but was Stabbed 16 Times

Watson started tying Tate who was 8 and half months pregnant, and Sebring鈥檚 necks together with a rope he had carried. He then slung it over one of the living room鈥檚 ceiling beams which made Sebring protest the treatment of Tate. Watson shot Sebring for his objection to the murderers鈥 rough treatment.

After Sebring was shot, Tate begged to be spared to live long enough to give birth and even offered herself as a hostage in an attempt to save her unborn child鈥檚 life. However, both Atkins and Watson stabbed her 16 times, killing her. Manson instructed the women to 鈥渓eave a sign鈥攕omething witchy,鈥 which they used Tate鈥檚 blood to write 鈥減ig鈥 on the front door.

6. The Other Occupants of the House were Killed by Stabbing and Shooting

As Tate was being tortured, Folger took one of the assailants to the bedroom and gave them $70. She managed to escape momentarily but was pursued by Krenwinkel who stabbed and tackled her to the ground. Folger was stabbed 28 times with Watson helping in the murder.

Sebring was also stabbed seven times. Frykowski freed himself from a towel he was bound with but was stabbed in the legs. As he struggled to the porch, he was struck by the gun multiple times, stabbed repeatedly, and shot at twice. Frykowski suffered 51 stab wounds and 13 strikes on the head.

7. LaBianca鈥檚 Were Stabbed More than 30 Times by the Manson Family Members

On 9th August 1969, Charles Manson led his gang to supermarket executive Leno LaBianca鈥檚 home where he had attended a party the previous year. Leno and his wife, Rosemary were sound asleep when the Mansons gained entry through the unlocked back door.

The LaBianca were bound by pillows, Leno was left in the living room while Rosemary was taken to the bedroom. Watson went into the bedroom after hearing a scuffle and found Rosemary keeping the woman at bay by swinging the lamp tied to her neck. He stabbed her several times with the bayonet then returned to the living room and continued his assault on Leno, whom he stabbed 12 times in total.

The word 鈥淲AR鈥 was then carved into his abdomen. Watson returned to the bedroom to find Krenwinkel stabbing Rosemary with a kitchen knife. Van Houten stabbed her in the back and exposed her buttocks about 16 times.

8. Manson Tried to Forcefully Grab a Wealthy Teacher鈥檚 Riches and Killed Him

Gary Allen Hinman was a renowned music teacher and Ph.D. student who had befriended some of the members of the Manson Family. Charles Manson believed that Gary was wealthy and had an eye for his riches. On 25th July 1969, Manson sent three family members to Gary鈥檚 home to convince him to turn over his wealth and join them.

Gary was held hostage for two days after denying being rich and turning over his wealth. Manson tried to convince him during his visit, but he refused to cooperate. Gary was slashed in the face and ear by Manson before he was stabbed to death.

9. Charles Manson Stabbed his Uncle to Death when he was on Parole

On 27th May 1979, 64 years old Darwin Morell Scott, the uncle of Manson and brother to his father was murdered. He was brutally stabbed to death in his apartment in Kentucky.

Darwin鈥檚 body was found pinned to the kitchen floor with a butcher knife. He had been stabbed 19 times. During this time, Charles Manson who was the prime suspect was out of touch with his parole officers during his parole.

10. Most Victims of the Manson Murders were Well Known to them

Following the history of the murders carried out by the Manson family, there is a link between the victims and members of this family. Most of his victims were well-known to Charles Manson and had met and spent some time with them.

Gary Allen Hinman, Sharon Tate, and Leon LaBianca were examples of the victims that were well-known by the Manson family. However, these victims went through a lot of pain from the murderers during the incidents.
