11 Crazy Facts About ChatGPT

ChatGPT is arguably the most interesting thing in the world right now. You might not have interacted with it yet but you’ve more than likely heard of it.

So, what is ChatGPT? ChatGPT, also known as the Generative Pre-training Transformer, is a neural network-based language model developed by Open AI. This powerful model is capable of understanding and generating human-like text.

This in effect makes it one of the most advanced language models in existence. As interesting as it is, one can also argue that it’s also equally frightening. It does raise the question of how much longer manpower will be necessary for some fields such as programming.

However, that is a question for another day. In this essay, we will explore 10 crazy facts about ChatGPT.

1.  Not Connected to the Internet

If you’re a frequent user of the internet, chances are you have interacted with at least one chatbot. However, unlike these other chatbots, ChatGPT is not connected to the internet. It also does not have access to external information.

ChatGPT operates entirely on data it has been trained on. For example, the current version as at the time of writing uses information that dates up to 2021. It does not have records of recent activities or events. For example, if a country has had recent elections, it will return the president as the one who was in office as of 2021.

2. Uses 175 Billion Parameters

ChatGPT uses 175 billion parameters, making it one of the largest language models in existence. This large number of parameters allows the model to process and understand a vast amount of information, making it more accurate and capable of generating more complex responses.

The current version, ChatGPT-3 is the one currently in use at the time of publishing this article. Previous versions such as ChatGPT-1 used approximately 1.5 billion parameters. Note that the more or larger the parameters, the more computing, storage, and processing power are needed for the model to run smoothly.

4. Can be Fine-Tuned for Several Different Tasks

Fine-tuning allows you to adapt ChatGPT to a specific task or field that you are interested in. This can be achieved by training the model using only a specified dataset relevant to the task at hand.

ChatGPT can be fine-tuned for various language tasks, including language translation, summarization, and question-answering. This means that the model can be adapted for specific applications, such as chatbots or language translators, making it a versatile tool for a wide range of industries.

5. ChatGPT is Multilingual

The ChatGPT model is trained on extensive datasets from various languages. This includes widely used languages such as English, Spanish, French, German, Chinese, Mandarin, Albanian, Russian, Nepali, Finnish, Dutch, and others.

The list includes over 95 languages. It is crucial to note that the performance of the model translating or generating a language depends on the quality and amount of data available for or in the language.

This, therefore, means it is multilingual and capable of understanding and generating multiple languages. The model uses a technique called “zero-shot learning” to generate text in different languages.

This is done by training the model to recognize a specific token or symbol that indicates the language of the input text. For example, the model can be trained to recognize the symbol “en” for English and “es” for Spanish. Once the model recognizes the symbol, it can generate text in the corresponding language.

6. Can Generate Creative Writing, Poetry, And Even Computer Code

ChatGPT can generate creative writing, poetry, and even computer code. This is an impressive feat, as it demonstrates the model’s ability to understand and generate not just text, but also structured and technical language.

However, it should be noted that ChatGPT is not ‘an expert’ and its creativity is limited to some extent as it is reliant on the provided information.

7. Not A Search Engine

I know, most people are using Chat GPT in place of search engines since it produces more precise results. For example, if you were to search for something on Google, you will likely get thousands of results. ChatGPT on the other hand will provide a clear and to-the-point response.

However, ChatGPT was designed to be a language processing system, not a search engine. The primary purpose of ChatGPT is to understand and generate human-like text, not to search the internet for information.

8. Fastest-Growing Consumer Application in History

On 30th November 2022, ChatGPT was launched. Within two months after the launch, the chatbot had reached 100 million monthly active users.

This makes it the fastest-growing consumer application in history. To put this growth into context, it took Instagram and TikTok two and a half years and nine months respectively to reach the milestone.

9. It’s Not Always Right

It can also generate text that is nonsensical, incorrect, or even offensive, because of the data it was trained on. As with any machine learning model, the quality of the output is only as good as the quality of the training data.

ChatGPT was trained on a wide range of text from the internet, which may include offensive or incorrect content. Therefore, it is important to be mindful of the model’s output and filter it for inappropriate content.

10. Not Sentient or self-aware

Humans are examples of sentient beings. That is able to perceive feelings by 5688709 from

ChatGPT is not sentient and doesn’t have consciousness or self-awareness. While the model is highly advanced and capable of understanding and generating text, it is important to remember that it is not sentient.

It does not have consciousness or self-awareness, and its actions are based solely on the programming and data that it has been trained on.

11. Elon Musk Paused access to Twitter’s database

ChatGPT uses information from various databases and websites. As the world experimented with the platform, Twitter CEO Elon Musk learned that the platform had access to Twitter.

Elon proceeded to put a pause on said access saying, (we) “Need to understand more about governance structure & revenue plans going forward.”

ChatGPT is an incredibly advanced and capable language model, with a wide range of potential applications. From language translation and summarization to creative writing and even computer code generation, its capabilities are vast and varied.

As AI and machine learning technology continues to advance, we can expect to see ChatGPT and other models like it being used in an even wider range of industries, revolutionizing the way we communicate and process information.

It is an exciting time for the field of AI, and ChatGPT is a prime example of the potential for these technologies to make a real impact in the world.
