1. Domestic violence in the US records 10 million victims annually

According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV) statistics, 10 million women and men are abused by an intimate partner in the United States every year. This translates to 20 abuses per minute.

2. Domestic violence is grouped into various forms

According to the US Department of Justice, different types of abuses fall under the category of domestic violence. They are physical, sexual, or emotional abuses. Part of the list is also actions or threats of an economic, psychological, or technological nature.

3. 15% of violent crimes in the US are linked to intimate partner violence

The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV) reports reveal that more than 15% of violent crimes in the US are associated with intimate partner violence each year.

Furthermore, breaking down this data further reveals that 1 in 3 women have encountered physical violence, rape, and stalking among other forms of violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime. Men also face domestic violence and 1 in 4 men have encountered intimate partner violence at some time in their life.

4. Domestic violence cases reach over 20,000 daily in the US

There are more than 20,000 calls made to hotlines from across the country every day to report incidents of Domestic violence.

5. Less than 50% of domestic violence cases are reported in the US

Many of the domestic violence cases in the US end up unreported. Thus only 30% or so reach the relevant authorities such as the police. This is because victims are abused by people closest to them which creates fear and a feeling of shame opting for silence. In some cases, the victim is economically dependent on the offender making reporting such issues a tough choice to make.

6. A weapon is involved in over 15% of domestic violence incidents

As per the US National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV), about 19% of domestic violence cases expose the use of a weapon, upon investigation. More to it, the possession of firearms also increases the risk of fatal domestic violence encounters which can lead to severe consequences including loss of life.

7. Injuries from domestic violence are rarely taken for medical care

Only 34% or thereabout people who experience domestic violence injuries especially inflicted by intimate partners seek medical care.

To add on, many of these injuries as reported by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence in the US never reach the attention of medical experts. Yet 1 in 7 women face injuries out of intimate partner violence. While 1 in 25 men also encountered injuries from intimate partners.

8. Rape in the US is a key form of domestic violence

About half of the rape cases reported in the US are caused by an acquaintance. Data from National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV) translates this to 46.7% rape cases by an acquaintance for females and 44.9% for the male gender.

Furthermore, it means that 1 in 5 women are raped at some point in their life while the figure stands at 1 in 71 men. Even so, intimate partner rape takes the largest share of the reported rape cases. That is 45.4% of female rape victims are raped by intimate partners while the number stands at 29% for male rape victims.

9. Most of the US female workplace murders stem from domestic violence

A 2022 report by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) made it clear that women’s homicides in their workplaces are perpetrated by intimate partners to a great extent. The report was titled, Workplace Homicides Among U.S. Women: The Role of Intimate Partner Violence.

To boot, there are more than 13,000 acts of violence every year committed against women while in their workspaces by intimate partners. The NCBI report added that between 2003 and 2008, there were 648 cases of women killed while in their job environments.

What鈥檚 more, out of the 648 murders, 181 were caused by personal relationships. The intimate partner violence (IPV) relationship contributed to a majority of the cases (142 out of 181).

10. Stalking in the US has attracted millions of victims

This form of domestic violence in the US has attracted many victims. NCADV reports provide evidence that at least 19.3 million women have been stalked in their lifetime. Out of these female victims, over 60% of them disclosed that they were stalked by either a current or past intimate partner.

On top of that, the number of men who have been stalked during their lifetime is 5.1 million men. Yet, about 43% of this figure admitted to being stalked by current or past intimate partners.

11. 1 in 15 US children witness domestic violence every year

Children are trapped in the center of domestic violence, with 1 in 15 children being exposed to this menace each year. Thus over 90% of these children in domestic violent households end up as direct witnesses to the abuses.

Subsequently, these experiences can have a negative influence on the emotional, physical, or sexual behavior of children. Such as mental health conditions like depression, low self-esteem, and anxiety. The children may adopt the observed tendencies that can manifest throughout their lives.

12. Domestic violence affects the economic life of victims

In the US, domestic violence victims lose up to 8 million days of paid work every year. This trickles down to a loss of $18 million in annual earnings resulting from absenteeism or termination. Further, about 20% to 60% of domestic violence victims lose their jobs due to factors sparked by the abuse.

13. Domestic Violence has various health effects on victims

The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV) findings establish that sexual intimate partner violence exposes the prevalence of HIV or other STIs. This is likely in situations where there鈥檚 forced intercourse.

Other studies have also found that there is a close link between intimate partner violence and depression, suicidal thoughts and behavior.

Moreover, there are many more health effects linked to domestic violence like anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), unintended pregnancy, miscarriage, and stillbirth among others. These abuses also pose a risk of increased alcohol, tobacco, or drug addictions among victims.

14. Domestic violence has scaled up to adopt technology

Technology-facilitated domestic abuse (TFDA) is increasing by the day with the rapid advancements in the technological space. Thus TFDA is a broad term referring to the use of mobile phones or any other digital technologies to harass, threaten, control, or track another person.

Cyberbullying is one of the common forms of technology-facilitated abuse.

15. Teen dating violence in the US is a worrying trend

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) carried out a nationwide survey in 2011, known as the CDC 鈥� 2011 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance Questionnaire. The analysis of the report showed that at least 9% of teens were physically hurt by a dating partner within the past year. These physical abuses included pinching, hitting, shoving, or kicking.

More to it, about 29% of adolescents faced various forms of violence. Such as emotional abuse through threats and demeaning remarks. Others also experienced sexual abuse by being forced to have sex by a partner. Yet the subject of teen dating violence is not included as a domestic violence issue in some US states.
