The United States has dominated the art market since the mid-20th century. However, the American artists in the 20th century formed the basis for the growth and development of Morden and contemporary art. 鈥淚f I could say it in words there would be no reason to paint鈥 is a famous quote running through the air for all artists. Art is not just a skill or a passion, it鈥檚 a way of expressing what has not been put into words by painting. In American history, artists have gone ahead to capture the expansiveness of the country through their sensational paintings. Many American artists have managed to produce outstanding art and in this article, we will explore the fifteen most famous American artists of all time.

1. Gilbert Stuart

Gilbert Stuart was an American painter who lived between 1755 and 1828. He is famously known as one of America’s foremost portraitists for his sensational work of paints. He earned his fame through painting famous people and presidents including James Madison, Thomas Jefferson, and John Adams. He also painted European Royalty among them King George III of England and Louis XVl of France. One of his most famous paintings was his unfinished likeness of George Washington. The paint was begun in 1796 and was meant as a half-figure of the first president. However, Gilbert managed to finish only the head and the face. The magnificent painting has appeared on the United States one-dollar for more than a decade.

2. Mary Cassatt

Mary Cassatt is one of the famous and legendary American printmakers and painters who lived between 1844 and 1926. She was born in Pennsylvania but spent most of her adult life in France where she began creating paints of the social and private of women. She majored in the relationship and bond between mothers and children. Most of her art was dominated by intimate domestic scenes with girls and women being the main focus. Her work was shaped during the fashion period in France for Japanese design and art.

3. Edward Hopper

Edward Hopper was an American realist printmaker and painter who lived between 1882 and 1967. He became famous for his work of art in oil paintings. He made a name for himself from his work as a printmaker in etching and a watercolorist. He managed to create subdued drama from the commonplace subjects which allowed narrative interpretations. He was celebrated for 鈥渃omplete verity鈥 in America which he portrayed through his paintings.

4. Frederic Edwin Church

Frederic Edwin Church was an American landscape painter who lived between 1826 and 1900. He gained fame from his mastery of art in painting large landscapes which mostly depicted waterfalls, sunsets, and mountains. His paintings paid attention to the panoramic views, realistic details, and dramatic light. He made his debut in single-painting exhibitions where he demonstrated his unmatched talent to a paying audience in New York City. He Was one of the most famous and celebrated painters in the United States.

5. James Abbott McNeill Whistler

James Abbott was an American painter who gained fame during the Gilded Age which was based in the United State. He lived between 1834 and 1903 where he led a successful life of creating iconic works of art like his mother. He deliberately avoided moral allusion and sentimentality in painting. He signed off his paintings with the shape of a stylized butterfly which possessed a long stinger that symbolized a tail. One of his most famous paintings was “Arrangement in Grey and Black No 1” which was commonly referred to as Whistler’s Mother in 1871.

6. Jackson Pollock

Paul Jackson Pollock was an American painter who was famously known for his drip technique of splashing paint on a horizontal surface which made it possible to view and paint from all angles. This fascinating painter lived between 1912 and 1956 and his input into art was so outstanding.  His technique became later to be known as action painting. He intentionally abstained from laying his canvases on the floor where he used house paint from a can by flinging and dribbling the thin skeins of pigment that leave behind a concrete record of his movements. The paints came out so phenomenon making one of the most famous artists of all time.

7. John Singer Sargent

John Singer Sargent was famously known and considered the leading portrait painter of his generation. He lived between 1856 and 1925 and made about nine hundred oil paintings and probably more than two thousand watercolors. He was also greatly involved in countless sketches and charcoal drawings. His work of paint was particularly remarked for his ability to draw using a brush which later inspired criticism and admiration.

8. Georgia O鈥橩eeffe

Georgia O鈥橩eeffe was one the American modernist artist who lived between 1887 and 1986. She is mostly referred to as the Mother of American modernism. She began painting at an early age when she contracted typhoid and had to be away from school for a year. She won the League’s William Merritt Chase still-life prize in 1908 for her oil painting called Dead Rabbit with copper pot. She rose to prominence from her magnificent work of painting New Mexico landscapes, New York skyscrapers, and flowers. She won several awards for her input to arts in America including the National Medal of Arts by President Ronald Reagan in 1986.

Norman Rockwell was an American painter born in 1894 in New York and passed away in 1978. He was a talented artist who realized his talents at the age of fourteen and enrolled to study arts at the New School of Arts. He gained fame from his unmatched awareness of the common American setting which was particularly the charm of the town鈥檚 lifestyle. He was also famous for the cover illustration of everyday life which he created for The Saturday Evening Post magazine. He managed to produce over four thousand original works in his lifetime. Among his notable works are the Four Freedom series and the Willie Gillis series among others.

10. Roy Lichtenstein

Roy Lichtenstein was an American pop artist who lived between 1923 and 1997. He became very famous in the 1960s for his amazing art in the new art movement. He was among the leading figure in the new art movement. His work of art was majorly influenced by the comic book style and popular advertising. His work of art was exhibited in New York at the Leo Castelli gallery. One of his most famous works is the 鈥淒rowning Girl鈥 and 鈥淟ook Mickey鈥 which are regarded as his most influential works.

Andy Warhol was a legendary pop artist who captured the attention of American society with his outstanding talent as an artist. He lived between 1928 and 1987 and made a name for himself from his talent. He began his career in New York as a corporate and graphic artist. However, he rose through the ranks and became popular in advertising in fine arts. He became famous for subjects such as Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe, and Campbell’s Soup among others.

12. Jean 鈥 Michel Basquiat

Jean-Michel Basquiat was an American artist who lived between 1960 and 1988. He began painting at an early age learning to sketch with the help of his mother. Both of them visited the numerous museum shows in the Yew York and his passion for the arts became bigger. He rose to prominence in the 1980s following his involvement in the Neo-expressionism movement. He paid attention to dichotomies such as integration versus segregation, wealth versus poverty, and inner versus outer experience. Some of his most famous works of art include Head (1981), Warrior (1982), and Untitled (1982)

13. Keith Haring

Keith Haring made a name for himself from pop art that emerged in the 1980s from the New York City Graffiti subculture. He was born on the 4th of May 1958 and passed away on the 16th of February 1990.He was much involved in artworks that included sexual allusions. He used the paintings as a tool to advocate for AIDS and safe sex awareness. He managed to produce more than fifty public artworks and many of them were created voluntarily for hospitals. His art majorly brought out political and societal themes. He was honored for his input in arts and inducted into the National LGBTQ Wall of Honor in New York City.

14. Grant Wood

Grant Wood was a famous American painter. He lived between 1891 and 1942. He became famous for his best-known paintings that depicted the rural American Midwest. He was particularly famous for the American Gothic which has become iconic since the early 20th century. This sensational painting was first exhibited in 1930 at the Art Institute of Chicago. He also worked with several media including ink, charcoal, metal, wood, lithography, and ceramics among others.

15. Winslow Homer

Winslow Homer was an American landscape painter who lived between 1836 and 1910. He became very popular for his work on marine subjects. Most of the paintings depicted coastal landscapes and shores. He is considered a preeminent figure and one of the foremost painters of the 19th century. However, he began his career as a commercial illustrator before he concentrated on working extensively in watercolor, and prolific oeuvre. He was involved in painting competitions and events at the 1932 Summer Olympics. His work is outstanding to date and his largest paint located at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
