20 Most Popular Black Country Singers of All Time 


 

Country music is one of the most listened-to genres of music in the world today. It is known for its ballads and dance tunes, with the simple form, folk lyrics, and harmonies accompanied by string instruments such as electric and acoustic guitars, steel guitars, banjos, fiddles, and harmonicas.

When one thinks of country music, a cowboy comes to mind. In all honesty, cowboy and frontier values continue to play a role in the larger country music. Western wear, cowboy boots, and cowboy hats are the fashion items associated with this genre.  

African-American artists have not been left behind. They have been making awesome country music over the decades, making names for themselves while at it. Here are the 20 most popular black country singers of all time.

1. Kane Brown

Kane Allen Brown is the first on our list. He was born on 21st October 1993 and raised in rural northwest Georgia and also in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He is multiracial, with a white mother and an African-American father.

Kane Brown has a rich, low-baritone voice and is making waves in country music with songs like Heaven, Good as You, and Like I Love Country Music. He writes his songs and in 2019, he won the American Music Favorite Country Male Artist Award among others.

2. DeFord Bailey 

The legendary DeFord Bailey was an American country and blues musical star from the 1920s until the 40s. He was one of the first black country performers,  responsible for some of the biggest wins in country music.

Born on 14th December 1899 near the Bellwood community in Smith County, Tennessee, he was the first Black country musician to perform in the prestigious Grand Ole Opry show. He was not only a talented singer but also a skilled harmonica and banjo player.

 In 1941, there was a legal battle over the rights to his music, so he couldn’t play his most popular songs live on air. Bailey died on 2nd July 1982 in Nashville, and he is buried in the town’s Greenwood Cemetery. Bailey was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2005.

3. Brittney Spencer

Brittney Spencer is a country music singer and songwriter, who is a native of Baltimore, Maryland. She was born on 8th September 1988 in a musical family with her dad being a member of a musical band. She started by singing in church when she was younger.

Britney plays the guitar and piano and she has released several singles, including  Sober & Skinny, A hundred years old, and Better as Friends.

4. Milton Patton

Milton Patton is a black country singer who first came to the limelight when he auditioned for America’s Got Talent in 2013.

He was raised in Forrest City, Arkansas, and he grew up listening to gospel, R&B, hip-hop, and jazz. His father also introduced him to country music. He has sung songs like Get Us in Trouble, Cornbread Fed, and Long Black Leather Coat.

5. Carl Ray 

Carl Ray is a black country musician who was born and raised in Houston, Texas. He sings contemporary Black country music. This singer combines some of the core elements and historical influences of the genre to create amazing music.

Some of his songs include ‘Baby I believe In You’, ‘I Can See Clearly Now’, and I Stand With This Country. Ray co-hosts “Atlanta Live” with his wife, Gail Williams.

6. Jimmie Allen

James Edward Allen is an American country music singer and songwriter. He was born on 18th June in Milton, Delaware, U.S.

Jimmie won the Country Music Association Award for New Artist of the Year in 2021. some of his songs include Make Me Want To, Best Shot, and Down Home.

7. Darius Rucker 

Darius Carlos Rucker is an American singer, guitarist, and songwriter. He was the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist of the rock band Hootie & the Blowfish. He was born on 13th May 1966 in Charleston, South Carolina, U.S.

He started his solo career in 2001 and started singing country in 2008.  Some of his songs include Wagon Wheel, Lost in You, Another Night with You, and You, Me & My Guitar.

Darius has won three Grammy Awards, an Academy of Country Music Award, and a Country Music Association Award.

8. Rhiannon Giddens

Rhiannon Giddens is a multiracial American country musician. She founded the country, blues, and folk band, the Carolina Chocolate Drops. Giddens is the lead singer, fiddle player, and banjo player. She strives to keep the history of Black American music alive including the musical traditions that came from enslaved peoples.

She has collaborated with dozens of prominent artists and woven her talent into multiple genres. Tomorrow Is My Turn, Factory Girl, and Don’t Call Me Names are some of her songs.

Giddens is an award winner having won many awards including Grammys and a MacArthur Fellowship and others in and out of the country music genre. 

9. Charley Pride 

Charley Frank Pride was an African American singer, guitarist, and professional baseball player. He was born on 18th March 1934 in Sledge, Mississippi. This singer was a self-taught guitar player who started playing when he was 14 years old.

Charley started as a professional baseball player before his long-awaited career in music. His song, ‘Kiss an Angel Good Morning’ was a mega-hit in the 70s and proceeded to release hit after hit well into the ’80s.

He is among country music’s first black singers plus the most iconic. He won the Entertainer of the Year award at the Country Music Association Awards in 1971 and was awarded a Grammy for “Best Country Vocal Performance, Male” in 1972.

Pride died of COVID-19 in Dallas, Texas on 12th December 2020 at 86 years.

10. Yola

Yolanda Claire Quartey, professionally known as Yola or Yola Carter, is an English singer, songwriter, musician, and actress. She was born on 31st July 1983 to a Ghanaian father and a Barbadian mother in Bristol, England.

Yola was in a band for some years before she went solo after the death of her mother in 2013. I Don’t Wanna Lie, Diamond Studded Shoes, and Stand for Myself are some of her songs. 

She has won 5 UK Americana Awards so far. 

11. Blanco Brown

Bennie Amey III, professionally known as Blanco Brown, is an American country music artist, singer, songwriter, record producer, and rapper. He was born on 24th March 1985 in Atlanta, Georgia and he grew up listening to hip-hop music.

As a producer, he has worked with Chris Brown and Pitbull. Blanco hit the country music scene by storm, with his debut single in 2019. The Git Up was a hit and reached the top of the Hot Country Songs chart.  

12. Lesley Riddle 

Lesley “Esley” Riddle was an African American musician who shaped country music into what it is today. Riddle was born on 13th June 1905 in Burnsville, North Carolina, but he grew up with his paternal grandparents near Kingsport, Tennessee, near the Virginia border.

He started playing the guitar in the 1920s after a work injury left him with an amputated leg. Riddle retired from music in the 1940s but went back to it in the 1960s thanks to folk musician Mike Seeger.

Riddle appeared at folk festivals and contributed to a series of studio albums before he died on 13th July 1979 in Asheville, North Carolina.

13. Mickey Guyton

Candace Mycale Guyton, professionally known as Mickey Guyton, is an American country music artist. She was born on 17th June 1983 in Arlington, Texas. Mickey began singing when she was five years old and her inspiration was LeAnn Rimes.

Guyton was exposed to various types of music when she was young and so her music has R&B, gospel, and pop elements in a country style. She often sings about her experience as a black woman. 

Mickey sang the National Anthem at the Super Bowl LVI in February 2022. Her songs include “Love My Hair”, “What Are You Gonna Tell Her?”, and “Better Than You Left Me.

14. Cowboy Troy 

Troy Lee Coleman III, professionally known as Cowboy Troy, is an American country rapper and singer. He got the stage name in college after a friend used the name to distinguish the cowboy-hat-wearing Coleman from his other friends named Troy. He was born on 18th December 1970 in Victoria, Texas, 

He sings country rap which is a fusion genre of popular music, blending country music with hip hop–style singing or rapping. In 2005, he released “I Play Chicken With The Train,” and since then, he has done seven studio albums and two Extended Plays.

Hook ‘Em Horns, Cash in the Cookie Jar, and Ballad of Cherokee Bill are his other songs.

15. Petrella

Petrella Ann Bonner is an American country music singer, songwriter, and music producer. She was born on 15th April 1947 in Hot Springs, Garland County, Arkansas. She began by singing in church before joining the school choir.

Petrella is the First Lady Of Country Soul and she has released eight studio albums so far with six of them being country, one gospel, and one Christmas. Her throaty voice and energetic songwriting have earned her several awards from organizations such as the Tennessee Songwriters Association.  

In 2009, Petrella represented Hot Spring Village in the Mrs. Arkansas American beauty pageant. It was her first time in the contest and she was awarded Mrs. Congeniality.

Her songs include This Isn’t Goodbye, Go For It, and I Want To Know You Forever among others.

16. Dom Flemons

Dominique Flemons is an American old-time music, Piedmont blues, and neotraditional country musician. He plays several instruments, sings, and writes songs. 

Dom was born on 30th August 1982 in Phoenix, Arizona. He grew up listening to his parent’s records, thereby expanding his music knowledge by studying recordings by Bob Dylan, the Beatles, and Chuck Berry.

While in high school, he played percussion for a band, plus guitar and harmonica in local coffee houses. He was good at playing banjo, fife, guitar, harmonica, percussion, quills, and rhythm bones.

“Long Journey Home” and “There’s A Brown-Skinned Girl Down The Road” are some of the Songster’s songs. 

17. Trini Triggs

Trini Triggs is a black country music artist. He was born on 8th August 1965 in Natchitoches, Louisiana. He has released two albums so far.

Straight Tequila, Heaven on Earth, Horse to Mexico, and I’m Only in It for the Love are some of this singer’s songs.

18. Linda Martell

Linda Martell was born Thelma Bynem on 4th June 1941 in Leesville, South Carolina. She was the first commercially successful black female artist in the country music field. She is credited with fighting for the rights of black country musicians.

She sang gospel music at church and was also drawn to country music. Lonely Hour, Bad Case of the Blues, and You’re Crying Boy, Crying are some of the single hits.

Her career in country music has inspired other black artists in the industry, including Kane Brown and Mickey Guyton.

19. Cleve Francis  

Cleve Francis is an American country music singer and songwriter. He was born on 22nd April 1945 in Jennings, Louisiana. He began his music career as a folk and blues singer and songwriter before moving to country music.

Cleve is also a cardiologist, having left his career in the medical field to become a country musician. Cleve eventually went back to working as a cardiologist again after several years.

Love Light, How Can I Hold You, and Love or the Lack Thereof are some of his songs. He has released nine albums so far. 

20. Rissi Palmer

Rissi Palmer is a black country music artist. She was born on 19th August 1981 in Sewickley, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Rissi was confident from a young age that she wanted to be a singer.

As a child, she sang on a Mickey Mouse Club-like local television-sponsored group called Team 11. At age 16, she performed country music at the Arkansas State Fair.

She is the host of the Apple Music Country’s show called Color Me Country Radio with Rissi Palmer. This singer has three studio albums and many successful hit singles.
