1.Jalāl al-Dīn Muḥammad 

Known as Rumi or Mawlana meaning Master. There is a lot of debate surrounding his place of birth, while some say he was born in Vakhsh, in modern-day Tajikistan others believe he was born in Balkh in present-day Afghanistan. He was born on September 30, 1207, and died on December 17, 1273. He is best remembered for his famous work Masnavi, a collection of six books consisting of 50,000 lines.

2. Pablo Neruda

His original name is Ricardo Eliécer Neftalí Reyes Basoalto. He was born in Parral, Chile on 12 July 1904 and died on 3 September 1973. Pablo won the 1971 Nobel Prize in Literature. His well-known poem is “I Do Not Love You Except Because I Love You”.

3. Rudyard Kipling

A poet and short story writer. He was born in Bombay Presidency, British India on 30 December 1865 and died on 18 January 1936. Rudyard was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1907 for his remarkable talent for narration. He is celebrated for his poem “Gunga Din”.

4. Oscar Wilde

He was born in Dublin, Ireland on 16 October 1854 and died on 30 November 1900 in Paris. Oscar was a poet and a playwright. He was known for his trials and jail sentence for homosexual acts. His poem “A Vision” is considered a masterpiece.

5. Mark Twain

His original name is Samuel Langhorne Clemens. He was born on 30 November 1835 in Florida, Missouri, and died on 21 April 1910. His stories and novels are famous for their humor. Mark’s famous poem is “Ode to Stephen Dowling Bots, Dec’d.”

6. Ralph Waldo

He was known as an advocate for social reforms. At the age of 14, he became the youngest student in his class at Harvard. In the mid-19th century, he led the transcendentalist movement. Ralph, a poet, and philosopher was born on 25 May 1803 in Boston and died on 27 April 1882.

7. John Donne

He is best known for his love poems. He was born on 22 January 1572 in London and died on 31 March 1631. A poet who later became a priest. He is well known for his poem “No Man Is an Island”.

8. Sylvia Plath

A poet and a short story writer, born in Boston on 27 October 1932 and died on 11 February 1963. Her poetry addressed personal struggles and relationships. Her wide-read poem is “ٲ”.

9. William Blake

William was a painter and a religious poet. He was born on 28 November 1757 in London and died on 12 August 1827. His poems and paintings were so different and he was inspired by the bible. He is reported to have seen angels and ghosts and believed his vision came from God. His famous poem is “The Tyger”.

10. Elizabeth Barrett Browning

She was born in England on 6 March 1806 and died on 29 June 1861 in Italy. She was a poet and short story writer. She was the first woman to be awarded the Pulitzer Prize in Poetry in 1982. Her famous poem is “How Do I Love Thee?”.

11. Edward  Estlin Cummings

Born on 14 October 1894 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and died on 3 September 1962. He was a poet, a painter, and a playwright. His style of writing was unique as he did not follow conventional punctuation. His name is frequently written as e cumings in lowercase. His wide-read poem is “I carry your heart with me”.

12.Sheldon Allan Silverstein

He was a poet, a cartoonist, and a songwriter. Sheldon was born on 25 September 1930 in Chicago and died on 10 May 1999. He is well known for drawing comics for Playboy magazine. His famous poem is “Where the Sidewalk Ends”.

13. Walker Alice

Alice Malsenior is a writer, social activist, American novelist, and poet. She was the first African American Woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for fiction.

She has published 9 volumes of poems; her poetry has a life of its own and it reveals the experiences of black women.

Some of her notable works include Once, The Kiss, Expect nothing and Horses make a landscape look more beautiful“.

14. William Shakespeare

He was born in Stratford-upon-Avon, England. He was Baptized on 26 April 1564 and died on 23 April 1616. He is best remembered for his famous play Romeo and Juliet and his poem “Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?”

15. Edgar Allan Poe

16. Maya Angelou

20. Walt Whiteman

An American poet and Journalist was born on 31 May 1819 in the United States and died on 26 March 1892. His famous poem is known as “I Hear America Singing”.

21. Homer

He is considered among the greatest influential writers of his time. He was born between the 12th and 8th centuries BC in present-day Greece. He is famous for the grand poems “The Iliad” and “The Odyssey”.

22. John Keats

He was born in London on 31 October 1795 and died on 23 February 1821. A poet greatly admired during the Victorian age. One of his widely read poems is “A Thing of Beauty“.

23. William Wordsworth

An English poet was born on 7 April 1770 and died on 23 April 1850. Fondly remembered for his romantic style of writing. He is popular for his poem “The Prelude”.

24. James Langston Hughes

Born in Joplin, Missouri on 1 February 1901 and died on 22 May 1967. He is prominent for the revival of African American art and literature. Renowned for his poem “I Too Sing America”.

25. Robert Frost

He was born in San Francisco on 26 March 1874 and died on 29 January 1963. He won the Pulitzer prize four times from 1924 to 1943 and became one of the most famous poets of his time. He is fondly remembered for his poem “The Road Not Taken”.
