30 Fun and Cool Things to Do in Miami

Miami is known for its tropical warm weather, pristine sandy beaches, trendy nightlife, vibrant art scene, and the glamor of fashion, just to mention a few. A visit to the ‘Magic City’ is a ticket to an exhilarating experience for many reasons. Miami offers a wide range of things to do and see, beyond its beaches and world-class nightclubs. Yet if that’s what you’re looking for, there’s a variety of options to choose from.

Miami’s South Beach is perhaps the most touristy neighborhood in the city.  It is home to the historic Art Deco District, featuring one of the largest art décor building complexes in the world. Then there’s the Lincoln Road shopping strip for all your souvenir and dining options. The sandy beach is a hotspot for summer activities, and that’s not all. The nightlife here is one of the best highlights, with trendy clubs like LIV Miami throwing electrifying  parties all week.

The city has a diverse culture, and the Little Havana neighborhood gives you a Cuban experience like no other.  Midtown and Downtown Miami usher you into a pulsating nightlife scene as well, with world-class clubs like Club Space and E11even. The party never stops in the city, and night owls willing to spend just as much will have a blast. For art lovers, Wynwood Arts District will blow your mind with breathtaking street murals on almost every block! The shopping experience at the upscale Miami Design District is undeniably off the charts, with top brands and exquisite spaces to explore.

While it might seem like Miami is for partygoers and shopping fanatics, there’s a side to this city that’s perfect for family fun, solo retreats, and just a laid-back vacation on a reasonable budget. Explore the vast  Everglades National Park and enjoy nature’s calming effect on an airboat. Then hit the park at the Bayfront area, catch a free yoga class and take a stroll on the walkways along the beach.  The Vizcaya Museum & Gardens will wow you with its historic feel and baroque architecture, a must-see! Catch a great family time with kids at the Miami Children’s Museum, then explore the city’s diverse cuisine.

Is there really a bad time to visit the city? That would depend on the kind of experience you’re looking for. Winter is the peak season, as out of towners flock the city for the near-perfect conditions. Winters in Miami are dry and warm, the ideal beach weather. Rates are incredibly expensive at this time, and accommodation fills up quickly.  Summers are quite hot and humid, with occasional rainfall. Spring is considered the shoulder season, and it’s less crowded at this time. There are pros and cons to whatever time you pick to visit.

It’s easy to get around the city, especially by car. However, parking can be hectic and expensive, especially in touristy areas like South Beach. Overall, budget for parking fees and look out for cheaper deals around if possible. There are several options for affordable  public transportation as well, including the Metromever, trolleys, and the Metrorail. The Metromever operates around Downtown and is a cheap way to move around the area. Car rentals and ride-sharing options are quite convenient especially when exploring places that are spread out far from your hotel.

Well, here are the 30 fun and cool things to do in the city!

Fun & cool things to do; Explore Miami’s neighborhoods

1. Explore the Art Deco Historic District

Located in the South Beach neighborhood in Miami Beach, the Art Deco Historic District is an ensemble of beautiful architecture, over 800 pre-war-style historic buildings, and colorful streets. It houses the largest collection of art deco buildings in the world!  Facing the Atlantic Ocean to the east, visitors can catch splendid water views as they tour the neighborhood. It’s pretty artistic, and walking or biking through the paths and taking in the beauty of the place is one of the fun free and budget-friendly things to do in Miami. Driving around can be hectic, so rent a bike or just stroll if you can.  There are plenty of hotels and shopping joints in the area but most of these are highly priced. South Beach is known for its touristy nature, so that’s expected.

It’s lined up with upscale shopping boutiques for all your luxury shopping needs. Whether you’re looking for the latest collections of women’s or men’s fashion, accessories, or luxury home goods, there’s a variety to choose from.

This is where sophisticated meets elegance, all in 18 square blocks north of the artsy Wynwood neighborhood. Hop from one design store or gallery to another, and savor the immersive experience that the district has to offer. The area is walkable and pedestrian-friendly, making it easy to tour around. 3. Explore a Cuban-American haven at Little Havana

, , via Wikimedia Commons

Miami is quite culturally diverse, and a visit here is hardly complete without experiencing authentic Cuban culture at Little Havana. It is located west of Downtown, and approximately a 25-minute drive from South Beach. The neighborhood is home to a thriving Cuban culture and lifestyle, and a top pick for visitors looking to explore Miami beyond the beaches and nightlife. Little Havana is named after Cuba’s capital, Havana, and it’s the best-known Cuban exile neighborhood in the world. From the tantalizing Cuban cuisine in its casual restaurants to the lively cultural festivals that take place throughout the year, you’ll be sure to find a fun thing or two to do.

Some of its top highlights include the Calle Ocho area and its Walk of Fame, featuring top Latin personalities such as Gloria Estefan. There’s the Tower Theater, Domino Park, and the serene Cuban Memorial Boulevard. The street food scene and music is hard to miss. The best part is, the area is way less expensive compared to South Beach or Downtown, and the food is as good as it gets.  Exploring Little Havana is a great idea for a full-day tour. However, be careful if you’re walking around at night since most streets may not be safe. Walk in groups if you have to.

4. Enjoy a bit of everything at South Beach

Located at the southern tip of Miami Beach, South Beach is famous for its eclectic touristy scene. It runs from South Pointe Park in the south to 23rd Street in the north. Featuring scenic stretches of white sandy beaches, trendy shops, and restaurants, the breathtaking buildings in its Art Deco neighborhood, and an iconic nightlife scene, visitors are spoilt for choice. Spend a day on the beach, or touring the area’s neighborhoods. Then grab some seafood at any of the numerous restaurants spread out in the area. Check out the shopping strip at Lincoln Road, and get yourself some souvenirs while at it. Take note, however, that most joints in the area have incredibly high prices.

Eateries will often have an automatic 20% service charge, and since the area gets crowded during peak times, the waiting time can be long. Driving around is not the best idea if you’re on a tight budget as parking here is relatively expensive. Some places charge up to over $ 10 an hour. When your parking expires, don’t be surprised when your car gets mowed and the hustle of dealing with all that ruins your stay. You can consider Uber or Lyft, and it’s even cheaper when you use ride-sharing options. Renting a bike to tour areas that are bike-friendly is a good idea as well.

Fun & Cool Things to Do for Couples

5. Wine tasting at the intimate Schnebly Redland’s Winery

The lawn and picnic tables offer a cool area for family dining, as the kids can run around as you finish off your meal or sip your wine over chitchat.

The farm-to-table cuisine is a top feature, and the menu offers a variety of options including vegan. To crown the scenic setting here, there’s live music that won’t drown your conversations during dinner. They offer an impressive selection of tropical fruit wines, and you can book a wine tour on their website for the best experience. Look out for their events online as well, including Latin nights, parties, special brunches, live music Sundays, and more.  Reservations are highly recommended.

They have DJs to keep you entertained.

Before 6 pm, anyone is welcome, but after that, all guests must be above 21 years. Make sure you have a physical ID to avoid any trouble at the entrance.
