The state of Georgia as just over 100 miles of coastline defined by a fusion of untouched white-sandy beaches and sparkling shores. This makes it the ideal destination for long weekends and family vacations.

These beaches offer the best escape from the busy city and suits all vacationers. There are luxurious resorts and budget-friendly hotels too.

Most people that come to Savannah cannot miss checking out Jekyll Island and Tybee Island’s beautiful beaches. The beauty of these two is that they are a few minutes away from Savanna.

Other than the historical homes, ghost hunting and shopping, you can spend some quality time with family, friends or alone by the beach. I have put together a list of the 5 amazing beaches you can check out.

1. Tybee Island

This barrier island is located in Chatham County. It is both a city as well as an island in the easternmost end of the state. The Island is popular with tourists and other visitors from Savannah and the world too.

Tybee Island is perfectly located close to the mouth of Savannah River. Pirates frequented this Island several times because of its convenient location.

The beach on this island is commonly referred to as Savannah beach because it is so close to the city.

This beach is perfect for families, couples and solo travellers that love to spend their vacation by the beach. There are several activities that one can engage in here.

Other than relaxing by the beach, you can go swimming, kayaking, hiking, biking or birdwatching. This Island is known as a birdwatcher’s haven since there are several Herons, Egrets and Ospreys.

While at this beach town, you can check out its main attraction, the Tybee Island Lighthouse which is the tallest and oldest lighthouse in Georgia.

The beautiful beach town restaurants serve the most delicious seafood and other delicacies. This beach is home to several endangered loggerheads turtles.

2. Cumberland Island National Seashore

This is the largest beach in Georgia’s Golden Isles.  The Island is found within the borders of Cumberland Island National Seashore. Its 17-mile-long shoreline is made up of several dunes, freshwater lakes, and marshes.

You can only reach this island by boat. Activities that you and your loved ones can engage in while here include hiking around the Island’s National Seashore. This is a major attraction here.

There is a camping option by the seashore surrounded by nature and water. The coastline here is made up of untouched flora and fauna.

Many wildlife enthusiasts have a good time spotting the animals on the island. You might even spot a few of the feral horses that wander around Cumberland Island

Cumberland Island has more than 23 environmental conservations making it one of the largest in Georgia.

While here, check out the First African Baptist Church established in 1893, the Plum Orchard Mansion ha was the winter home to George Lauder Carnegie and Margaret Thaw.

3. Driftwood Beach, Jekyll Island

Jekyll Island was once a popular vacation destination for the rich and famous personalities like Rockefeller, Morgan, Vanderbilt, Pulitzer, and Baker families.

The Island has a beautiful mix of history and natural beauty. Its main beach, Driftwood Beach, is located on the north end of the island. It borrows its name from the ancient driftwood trees that are scattered across the shore.

Driftwood beach is Georgia’s smallest, private and most pristine, no wonder the affluent loved it here. Several bird species, animals and reptiles can be found here too.

Being a popular vacation spot for many tourists, the Islanders have guided tours of the adjacent Landmark Historic District.

Popular activities to do on this Island include biking on the marked trails, walking, and jogging around the coastline and sandbars.

This island is home to a water park, the Summer Waves, perfect for families with young children.

4. Gould’s Inlet, St. Simons Island

This next beach is very popular with birdwatchers, fishing and ocean observation activities. It is found on the northern end of St. Simons Island.

It is one of the pet-friendly beaches that gives the best views the southern end of Sea Island which is close to the river inlet.

Most locals and tourist on this Island love to fish from off the boardwalk and along the beach. If you love water sports, you can join other paddleboarders on the sandbars for some waves.

The beach has limited parking. There is however a shower, water hose, community water bowl for pets, dog bag stations and benches to relax on.

5. Little St. Simons Island

If you would love to spend your vacation by the beach surrounded by sand, water and some quiet, then this next beach is where to go. You can only get to this Island by boat.

Little St. Simons Island, another barrier island just off Georgia’s coast. It is a privately owned nature preserve with seven miles of undeveloped beach.

This is an ecological gem with pristine maritime forests and marshland easily accessible to its antique vacation cottages.

Many vacationers here love to surf fishing, kayaking, go for nature hikes through the forests and swimming. While at the beach families engage in collecting shells and other fun activities.

When planning your visit and stay on this Island, you need to make prior arrangements with the Lodge management. In addition to accommodation, there are all-inclusive day-trips and overnight packages.
