Weird laws are simply in plenty in America. The different states have different legislators which is why the weird laws are very many. While the laws may not make sense today, at one point they were relevant and they served a purpose. Over time however, some of the laws have become obsolete and an be hilarious to say the least. From laws such as it is illegal to sell cars on Sunday to laws like ladies have to get a permit in order to wear heels. Be prepared for a head on surprise with this combination of weird laws from different states in the US. 

1. You cannot play dominoes on Sunday

In an effort to get more Alabama residents to go to church back in the early days, playing dominoes on Sunday was outlawed. It was believed and it was common that 90% of individuals went to church on Sunday. Dominoes is a family of tile-based games played with gaming pieces. It is a very common board game. This law is however no longer enforced.

2. It is illegal to open an umbrella downtown

While these sounds ridiculous today, in the olden days, there were no cars. People in Alabama mostly used horses as the main means of transport. Opening umbrellas when it rained in Alabama would scare the horses away. This would cause a very huge mess and maze of confusion in the city. To restore some semblance of order therefore, this law that outlawed opening an umbrella in downtown. This law is no longer enforced.

3. In Hermosa beach, visitors and residents are not allowed to spill salt on local roads

According to local code 9.12.040, 鈥渟pilling products on certain pavements鈥 can cause serious consequences. Not only does this ordinance prohibit the use of potentially oily or dangerous materials, it also prohibits spilling of 鈥渁ny salt, rock salt, common salt,鈥 or 鈥渟alt brine鈥 on the road. These substances, according to the Hermosa Beach code, could damage the pavement. This will in turn increase the costs for the city in the repairs of the damages.

4. It’s illegal to sell cars on Sundays

It is unlawful for any person, firm or corporation to engage in the business of buying, selling, trading or exchanging new, used or second-hand motor vehicles. Many laws made it illegal to trade specifically on Sunday. This was done in an effort to ensure that more people went to church. Sunday being the most common day of worship. The law states if a dealership is located in a county that has a population below 130,000, it can sell cars on Sunday. While the law is not enforced, most dealerships close on Sunday.

5. It is illegal to seduce an unmarried woman

Any man who shall seduce and debauch any unmarried woman shall be guilty of a felony, punishable by imprisonment in the state prison not more than five years or by fine of not more than $2,500. However, no prosecution shall be commenced under this section after one year from the time of committing the offense. This can be termed as cohabitation.

6. Adultery is not allowed

 Adultery is illegal, but can only be punished upon a complaint by the affected husband or wife. Any person who shall commit adultery shall be guilty of a felony. When the crime is committed between a married woman and a man who is unmarried, the man shall be guilty of adultery, and liable to the same punishment.

7. A woman cannot cut her hair at her own will

A woman isn鈥檛 allowed to cut her own hair without her husband鈥檚 permission. Hair was a symbol of womanhood. Further, this was a time when patriarchy was at it’s peek. This is the reason behind such absurd laws.

8. It is legal for a robber to sue if they get hurt in your house

While they are criminals, these people are still human. The state still has the responsibility to protect its citizens. This is why it is legal for a robber to sue if they get hurt in your house.

9. Destroying a vintage radio is illegal

If you鈥檙e no longer interested in keeping your old radio, forget about intentionally destroy it. It might be better to consider donating. This might have been enacted to protect the city’s heritage. Who knew radios could be so important.

10. It is illegal to paint sparrows

No person may paint, spray, dye, or otherwise color a bird to sell it as another species. But this isn鈥檛 specific to Harper Woods! Michigan law agrees that it is illegal to sell an artificially colored animal. While we can鈥檛 be sure of this law鈥檚 origins, we know that this one definitely benefits the animals.

11. Smoking in bed is not allowed

Whether this law was passed to keep your bedroom鈥檚 indoor air clear, or because one person too many lit their bed on fire while smoking, we can鈥檛 be sure. However, common sense tells me smoking in bed could easily lead to fire outbreaks or accidents. As they say, it is better to be safe than sorry.

12. It is illegal to serenade your girlfriend

It鈥檚 illegal in Kalamazoo to serenade your girlfriend. So you were suddenly possessed by a romantic spirit, pick a quieter option and go with a bouquet of flowers. Must be hard for our romantic lot.

13. Bathing suits must be inspected by the head of police

In Rochester, the law requires that all bathing suits must be inspected by the head of police. Well, this for sure is hard to understand.

14. It is illegal to throw an abandoned hoop skirt

No one in Grand Haven is allowed to throw an abandoned hoop skirt into the street, or onto any sidewalk. Anyone caught tossing out their old hoop skirts on the road will face a $5 fine.

15. It is illegal to have sex in a car

This law makes it illegal to engage in sex in a car parked in public places. However, engaging in sex while parked in your space for instance your garage is not outlawed. This was done to ensure that public spaces are respected and to reduce the possibility of a nuisance.

16. Anyone over age 12 can get a gun

Anyone over age 12 can get a gun license if they haven’t committed a felony. This is careless law that should no longer be in the books. With many attempts to reduce shootings in schools, making guns easily accessible to children who are yet to mature mentally is a careless act.

17. Anyone who has had diarrhea or is having a diarrhea is not allowed to enter the swimming pool

This law tries to cure the mischief of spreading water borne diseases. Waterborne disease outbreaks in pools are often caused by individuals with recent cases of diarrhea. The chlorine in the water does not always remove the viruses and parasites that can be transmitted from recent cases of diarrhea.

18. The San Francisco housing code prevents residents from storing non-vehicle items in their garages

Chapter 6 of the San Francisco housing code notes, 鈥淧rivate and public storage garages in apartment houses and hotels shall be used only for storage of automobiles.鈥

Unlike other areas of the country, apparently, San Francisco does not want you to use your garage to store items that you might not otherwise have space for. Instead, you must store those items off-site or inside your home. No matter how tight space gets, storing non-automobile items in your garage means you could face fines of up to 500 dollars.

19. It is illegal to have Christmas lights past February 2nd

In San Diego, having Christmas lights on any day after February 2nd is illegal. Christmas lights dangling past February 2nd may have one fined up to 250 dollars.

20. You can only wear cowboy boots if you own at least two cows

As far as the legislators in Blythe are concerned, you can only be a true cowboy after you own two cows. This then gives you the freedom to wear cowboy boots. Cowboy boots were viewed as the appropriate footwear for a real cowboy and not a fashion trend that people chose to ascribe to.

21. It is illegal to stand on the sidewalks with ice cream

This law was enacted in order to keep the street clean. The legislators found it sensible to outlaw standing on the sidewalk with ice cream since the ice cream would melt and spill on the sidewalk leaving the area dirty. This law was repealed.

22. Women are required to have a permit in order to wear heels of more than two inches

This law was enacted to prevent the city from lawsuits emanating from accidents that women in heels encountered. This was prevalent since the pavements were irregular. Having a permit meant that any woman who therefore decided to wear heels and got injured could not sue the city council in any court of law.

23. It is illegal to use your bathroom with the window open in Dana Point

While this law is no longer in force today, the law was enacted to serve a purpose back in the days. It was intended to cut down on fowl odors spreading around the neighborhood  due to bad drainage systems. Today however, you can shower as you please.

24. Los Angeles law specifically prohibits people from skateboarding or roller skating in the courthouse or library

According to Los Angeles ordinance 17.20.010, visitors to Los Angeles courthouses and libraries must not enter the building on certain sets of wheels. This is out of respect for these quite serious places of study and work. Disrupting a court session is contempt of court and could lead to fines and imprisonment. Also, it is common sense that silence should be maintained in the library where people visit to sample and read books.

25. It is illegal to throw confetti, firecrackers, or whips

Texas forbids the throwing of confetti, rubber balls, and firecrackers in city limits. This law was enacted to ensure that the city is maintained clean at all times. Being a period when there were few city council employees, it was a good idea to ensure that any chances of making the city dirty was limited.

26. Spittoons are required in some public spaces

El Paso has a law that requires  spittoons in church, assembly halls, hotels, banks, stores, train depots, and saloons. Technically, they鈥檙e required 鈥渙f a kind and number to efficiently contain expectorations into them,鈥 so even just a single spittoon might do these days. It might me that there were cases of excessive spitting in public which necessitated this law. You can imagine how serious it was that it had to be on the books.

27. You are required to have a permit before walking barefooted

In some cities, you鈥檙e required to purchase a 5 dollars permit before walking around barefoot. Doing otherwise is a violation of the city鈥檚 code governing 鈥渟anitation and appearance.鈥 As they say, appearance is everything.

28. You can get married through proclamation

Texas is a common law marriage state. This means you are considered legally married if the couple makes three public announcements that they鈥檙e married. Moreover, a couple can be considered legally married even if the other spouse isn鈥檛 present for the ceremony. However, both parties have to be willing participants, unrelated to each other by blood and of the age above 18.

29. It is illegal to carry wire cutters in your pocket

In Austin, you鈥檙e not allowed to carry wire cutters in your pocket. This law came from a time when ranchers disputed over open ranges vs. fencing off their land. Instead of addressing who was right, the law prevented ranchers from cutting each other鈥檚 fences by making it illegal to carry wire cutters. Very subtle and smart.

30. It is illegal to own an encyclopedia Britannica

Texas outlawed owning the encyclopedia set because a volume contains the recipe for making beer. The net effect of this information was that may individuals would endeavor to brew alcohol at home. More people drinking means reduced productivity and increased instances of drunk and disorderly conduct.

31. It is illegal to sell body organs

According to the Texas Penal Code Section 48.02, it鈥檚 against the law to sell human organs. It is illegal in Texas to sell your eyes, heart, kidneys, liver, lungs, skin and other organs or tissues. Those found selling their organs will be guilty of a Class A misdemeanor. The sanction on  conviction results in up to a year in jail and/or fines up to 4,000 dollars. This law also pertains to the purchase of organs.

32. It is illegal to milk someone else鈥檚 cow

In Texas, it is illegal to milk another person鈥檚 cow. The Texas Penal Code states that doing so results in a fine of no more than 10 dollars. The current Texas law makes the act a theft of personal property.

33. If you are planning to commit a crime you have to give a 24 hours notice

Those planning to commit a crime in Texas are required by law to provide their victims with 24 hours written or verbal notice. Reality is for anyone committing a crime, mystery is capital. I don’t expect that they would give this information so easily. However, this law was put on the books in an effort to reduce crime rates in Texas.

34. You cannot shoot a buffalo from the second floor of a hotel

At one point in time, it may not have been unusual for buffalo to roam through the streets of town. Nowadays, however, this doesn鈥檛 happen often enough for the state to need an ordinance protecting the rights of such buffalo. However, there鈥檚 still an active Texas law that prohibits shooting a buffalo from the second floor of a hotel. This law is very specific, apparently allowing the shooting of buffalo from other locations.

35. Kids should not have unusual haircuts

It is illegal for children to have unusual haircuts in Mesquite, TX. While we don鈥檛 know if any court would uphold the enforcement of that law, it鈥檚 still interesting to note how and when the law governed personal conduct or fashion.

36. It is illegal for five women to live together in Ohio

In the state of Ohio, it is illegal for more than five women to live together in a house. Back in the days, there was a huge likelihood that whenever a group of women lived together, they were practicing prostitution. To prevent the prevalence of brothels in the state, legislators decided to close the loophole and possibility by outlawing more than five women living together.

37. In Akron it is illegal to display coloured chicken for sale

The law states that it is unlawful to sale baby chicks, rabbits, ducklings, or other fowl or game which have been dyed or otherwise artificially colored. Any person found doing this will be guilty of a misdemeanor. This was outlawed in bid to reduce cruelty to animals and improve their quality of life.

38. It is illegal to get a fish drunk

It is against the law to make a fish intoxicated. This law was made to prevent river pollution from local distilleries. The distilleries had a habit of  dumping very alcoholic waste into the river. This in turn led to the death of fish in the rivers. This was also a technique to make fishing easier back in the days. However, this law is no longer enforced.

39. It is illegal for women to wear leather patent shoes in public

The reason why this law was enacted is quite interesting. Apparently, shiny shoes reflected a lady鈥檚 underwear. To avoid this from happening, it was made illegal for women to wear leather patent shoes which are shiny. However, men are allowed to wear the shiny patent leather shoes.

40. You must honk before you pass another car on the road

According to the Ohio driver鈥檚 education manual, you must honk your horn every time you pass another vehicle. However, a friendly wave is optional. This was a way of letting the other drivers know you are about to pass. However, this is no longer enforced today. You can imagine the amount of noise and the chaos that would be Ohio.

41. It is illegal to walk a cow down Lake Road in Bay Village

It seems to be that at some point, a lot of cows were walked down Lake Road. Cows can cause a whole fracas and confusion. These led to distractions to drivers, traffic and accidents. 43. Catching a mice without a permit is outlawed in Cleveland

Hunting licenses were issued to promote public safety in general. The license also helped to protect wildlife and contain the spread of animal-borne diseases. This law prevented people from randomly engaging in catching mice randomly. Because while it seems convenient, these animals carry viruses that can be easily transmitted to human beings causing various ailments.

44. It is illegal to have a bathtub in a private home in Ohio

This law dates from the 1800鈥檚 during the time of the cholera and smallpox epidemics. Many whole families were being wiped out by the common practice of the whole family using the same bath water. To prevent this from happening, the legislators saw it fit that no one should own a bathtub in a private home. However, this is no longer enforced today.
