Aunjanue Ellis Opens Up About Her Sexuality: What Does This Mean?

Aunjanue Ellis, born in 1969 is an American actress who has appeared in several television shows and movies throughout her career. She starred in films including The Taking of Pelham, The Express, Undercover Brother, Men of Honor the recent King Richard among others. Her fame across the world earned her a lot of attention which led to more fans asking her personal questions which led to her coming out as bisexual.

Ellis has always been an advocate for human rights for the members of the LGBTQIA+ community. However, she had never announced he sexuality or identified with any gender. According to her, the people in the LGBTQ+ community never knew her sexuality because they assumed she was straight.

Talking to Variety in the interview, the starlet explained her position in the queer world. She says that she has been queer since she was eight years old and has never stopped being one. However, she was in an environment where she did not feel comfortable coming out as bisexual at a young age, and therefore letting everyone know about her sexuality felt more comfortable.

Ellis said in the interview that she displayed herself as a queer woman on several occasions but many people failed to understand her message. She had clothes with LGBTQ+ messages but people ignored assuming that she was not bisexual. “I’m very clear about being bisexual. I have a sweatshirt that says ‘Girl Bi’ that I wear everywhere,” she said in the interview.

The actress also went on to express her disappointments in the way people assumed she was straight. She feels that it might have been because she is a woman and she is black. “There is an assumption made of me — a presumption made of me. Is it because I’m a Black woman from Mississippi? Is it because I’m older? I don’t know what the mechanics are that go into them not processing, or them not just being able to believe that in the same way, I am Black, I am queer. This is who I am,” the Richard King star explained.

As an advocate for LGBTQ+ members, Ellis urged people to come out as soon as they realize they are queer. She encourages the people in the black community to be who they are and let everyone know.

Ellis tells her journey as a bisexual woman to Variety. Since she knew about her sexuality at an early age, Ellis explained to the people close to her including family members and close friends. Therefore people inside her circle knew about her sexuality.

When asked about why she did not come out until when she was in her thirties, the actress explained that she never told people in public because nobody asked about her sexuality. The more people assumed about her sexuality, the more she dropped hints.

While at the Essence Black Woman in Hollywood awards, Ellis came with a red jacket with the word ‘queer’ written. However, nobody asked her about the name because many people thought it was written ‘queen.’ after coming out in the interview, Ellis reminded her fans about the hints she had given in the past.
