Jena Malone’s Pansexuality: What Does This Mean?

Jena Laine Malone, famously known as Jena Malone is an American actress who garnered fame from her roles in independent films and mainstream blockbuster features. She has shown prowess in the acting industry and won several accolades including a Golden Globe Award and two Screen Actors Guild Awards. Malone was born on the 21^st of November 1984, in Sparks, Nevada, and spent her childhood in Las Vegas.  Her mother was also an actress in the local theatre production which inspired Malone to become an actress. She began her acting career in the 1990s and quickly rose to fame for her fascinating talent.

Malone鈥檚 sexuality became a heated conversation when she posted on Instagram that she was pansexual. This was through a post that featured her dancing to the song 鈥�Book of Bringhi” as she announced to her 300,000 followers on Instagram. In an interview with the Hollywood reporter, Malone shared about her comments on Instagram.

“I guess It felt like I was a heterosexual man in a woman’s body. I visualized his desires and placed them on to me. But this was never the whole of the story that was meant for me. So I’ve been learning a new way to tell it. Using words to guide me not define me,” She said. Malone coming out was met with a lot of support both from her fans and her family. However, it was met with critics of equal measures from other fans and some of her peers who did not support her idea of coming out.

Coming out to the public to speak about her sexuality was a weight off her shoulders. Having struggled with sexual identity and finally being able to speak about it in public was a success and acceptance of who she is. During the interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she explained her feelings about coming out. She said “It felt so nice. I’ve been thinking about it for a while. The sexual journey is so beautiful. I mean, all of the identity journeys are so cool. I feel like I’m a little bit late to the game in being able to have less shame. I’ve been loving the process of learning more about myself and others through different terms that open windows, those windows then turn into doors, and then I arrive at a place to find all this cool stuff out there.” Though Malone admittedly feels that she is late in this game of opening up about her sexuality, she has assuredly enjoyed the the who process of getting to know who she is and having a great time thinking about it.

However, Malone was not unfamiliar with the queer lifestyle. She was raised in a queer family by two mothers and a queer sister. Her family has supported her as a pansexual. She said, 鈥�My sister is queer and I grew up with two moms who were lovers and then they split. My mom sort of became hetero again, mostly through an understanding of Christianity鈥� She added, “It鈥檚 nice to be able to have these different types of conversations with everyone. I feel really blessed to have an accepting family.鈥� Her sexuality was greatly influenced by her family and those that surrounded her. Growing up with a queer family created a sense of acceptance with the family and therefore coming out as a pansexual was embraced by her family member.

Malone coming out helped her to live a truth and embrace her sexual identity. It has also helped her to navigate the types of relationships she will pursue. In the interview, she said, “That my sexual identity has more to teach and to tell me. Finding words that feel more right to explore in my telling. Pansexuality. Sapiosexuality. Polyamory,鈥� she added, 鈥淎 fuller spectrum of understanding that my story is demanding of me. And I鈥檓 honoring it today with this soft and sleepy little stretch of a dance. I love humans. 

Malone confessed her struggles with her sexuality for a long time but she enough comfortable enough to talk about it. She is attracted to all people regardless of their gender identity. According to Molane, it鈥檚 about the people and who they are and not their sexual orientation.

She is also a member and supporter of the LGBTQ community. She is a role model to the community as she inspires other people to step out and express who they are. Leave the hideouts and leave their truth. Malone has opened the LGBTQ campaigns and has spoken about discrimination in the queer community. She has used her platform as a famous figure in the entertainment industry to speak for the rights of the queer community. She is an inspirational figure and her visibility has helped others to break down the stereotypes and misconceptions about pansexuality. She said, “I’m happy to be a part of the LGBTQ+ community. I think it’s important for people to be able to be themselves, and I want to help create a world where everyone feels accepted.”

Malone coming out is a reminder that everyone is different and everyone is free to identify with anything they feel comfortable with. She has demonstrated that there is no one way for you to be a as long as you are comfortable with yourself, then you are living your truth. She is an aspiration to many and a constant reminder that everyone can love everyone regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation. She said, “It’s a part of humanity now to have all these ceremonies of exclamation around coming out and renouncing [an identity] and celebrating that space for yourself. It’s a really sweet, human experience. I love getting to learn more about myself no matter the age or my experience.”

Malone’s pansexuality means that she is attracted to everyone despite their gender identity or sexual orientation. She may be attracted to male, female, genderqueer, or non-binary. Simply, the gender identity is not a defining factor of who she is attracted to.
