There are not many multitalented men in the entertainment industry like Rothaniel Jerrod Carmichael. He has proven to the world that he can be the best in almost everything he does including standup comedy, acting, writing, and filmmaking. The thirty-six-year-old Winston-born talent has thrived in the entertainment industry where he made a big name for himself, but not quite in his pursuit of self-discovery and embracing his sexuality.

Carmichael cemented his name in the history of film production as one of the best actors when he appeared in several television shows, movies, and series. Some works include his role in the 2021 film On the Count of Three, Poor Things in 2023, and The Carmichael from 2015 to 2017. His acting prowess has earned him fans around the world, some of them love him while others want to know his deeper secrets including sexuality and gender identity.

While shooting Rothaniel in Blue Note Jazz Club in New York City, the famous comedian had the chance of a lifetime to let out a secret he had been carrying throughout his life. He spoke about his family, the history and shortcomings of his parents, and eventually talked about his process of coming out of the closet.

The process of transitioning into an LGBTQ₊ life has never been easy for anyone and it wasn鈥檛 easy for Carmichael either. His worst fear was how he would be treated by the people he loved dearly including his parents. Unfortunately, some people treated him exactly the way he had feared while others loved him for who he was.

Throughout his narration, Carmichael recalls the incident where he found his mother cheating on his mother. Finding out that his father had been cheating for years made the comedian realize that he was not the only person hiding secrets from his family. The incident made him contemplate his secret and eventually decided to let it out regardless of the consequences.

鈥淎fter that was out in the open, I was left alone feeling like a liar, because I had a secret,鈥� he says. 鈥�One that I kept from my father, my mother, my family, my friends, and you. Professionally, and personally. And the secret is that I鈥檓 gay.鈥�

His revelation came as a shock for many people in the audience, including the closest people in his life because he had never told anybody about his sexuality. He had never discussed the topic in the open and supposedly nobody would have been suspicious enough to engage him in the discussion.

Carmichael revealed that his personality and ego was the reason he decided to stay in the closet for many years. he had vowed to himself to go to the grave with the secret because he could not imagine how his family would treat him if or when he came out considering the way people have been mistreated and left alone in the past after letting everyone know that they belong to LGBTQ+.

However, the North Carolina star has decided to choose a path that he loves more than anything and is ready to face whatever comes his way. 鈥淚鈥檓 accepting the love, I appreciate the love. My ego wants to rebel against it,鈥� he added, saying that he was afraid to face the reality that he was gay.

鈥淚 thought I鈥檇 never, ever come out. At many points I thought I鈥檇 rather die than confront the truth of that, to actually say it to people. Because I know it changes some people鈥檚 perceptions of me. I can鈥檛 control that,鈥� he said referring to the way his family received the news.

Speaking about his sexuality on Rothaniel was not the first time because Carmichael had hinted about it to his mother during the 2019 HBO special named Home Video where he had a conversation with his mother and told her that he had been with men in the past.

鈥淚鈥檝e hooked up with dudes before,鈥� said Carmichael to his mother. However, his revelation completely changed his relationship with his mother because of their differences in what they believe in.

His mother is a Christian woman who believes in God and therefore does not approve of gayism. The two have not been as close as before since his coming out to her and eventually to the general public in Rothaniel. His reasoning is that belief and personal growth must be one鈥檚 major goal and that is what he focuses on at the moment as he disagrees with his mother.

鈥淎s much as she believes in God, I believe in personal growth and feeling free,鈥� he says. 鈥�And I do feel freer.鈥�

Although Carmichael feels comfortable and freer today, he has not completely healed from the trauma that comes with pressure from family and friends. His relationship with his father has been damaged because of putting the family issues in the eye of the public. But the public is the only place where the comedian feels safe and brave to speak. According to him, coming out on camera and telling his story for the entire world to see has always been his stronghold. He is an open-minded man who speaks the truth even if some people don鈥檛 like his truth.

His father asked him whether he would do another special and whether he would speak about his family business. Even though Carmichael鈥檚 father does not appreciate his son speaking about him, the comedian would never hide the truth.

While speaking to New York Times, the actor expressed his feelings about his parents saying that he would never hide the truth anymore.

鈥淟ying doesn鈥檛 feel good anymore,鈥� he said. 鈥淚鈥檓 just trying to tell the truth now; the thoughts that I used to run from,鈥� continued Carmichael.

Since his coming out, the comedian has been free to speak about his sexuality letting everyone know how many times he had tried to tell his parents that he was gay but they kept on ignoring him. He had tried to start the conversation at home creatively but his mom and dad were not ready to face the reality that their child was gay.

However, despite not completely being free from fear after coming out, the comedian is better today and feels better as he speaks about his sexuality more often than before.
