Mae Jemison’s Amazing Achievements

Born as Mae Carol Jemison, she is an American engineer, physician, and former NASA astronaut who defied all odds by becoming the first African-American woman to travel into space. The story of Jemison always manages to convince me that there is nothing in this world you cannot achieve if only you set your mind to it. I truly admire her achievements and she is the one person I usually quote whenever the topic of ‘can women do masculine jobs’ comes up. She served as a mission specialist aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour in 1992. Even more impressively, she graduated from Stanford University and Cornell University Medical College, hence attesting to how smart she was. Here are some of the amazing achievements and accomplishments of Mae Jemison.

1. Jemison became the first African-American Female Astronaut to Fly into Space

Since her childhood, Jemison dreamed of venturing into space and this endeavour became a reality in 1992. After she came back from her exploration, she was quoted saying, 鈥淚鈥檇 love to go into space again if there were a mission to Mars. I鈥檇 also love to go to a completely different planetary system out of our solar system.鈥 Her becoming the first African-American woman was such a huge deal for African-American society in general and women all over the world, especially those with dreams pertaining to male-dominated professions.

2. First African-American Admitted to Training

Apart from being the first African- American astronaut to have traveled to space, she was also the first female African American to have been admitted to the astronaut training programme. Naturally, this wasn’t an easy feat, not only for a woman but for a black woman. It was unheard of but somehow Mae Jemison beat all the odds and managed to prove everyone wrong. She is often viewed as the epitome of feminism and a source of pride for the black community in America.

3. Mae is also a trained Doctor

One word to describe the woman, smart! Although she was quite interested in astronomy, she was also convinced before that she wanted a career in medical science. She studied at Cornell University Medical College where from she attained her M.D.  She was hands down a smart down and it doesn’t even come as a surprise that in the course of her life, she managed to accomplish so much.

4. Jemison is also a trained dancer

Don’t be fooled by Mae Jemison’s accomplishments. She knows how to let loose too. She is a trained dancer who also built a dance studio in her home and brought a poster from her dance school while on her space mission. As she was debating whether to become a professional dancer or go to medical school, her mother advised, 鈥淵ou can always dance if you鈥檙e a doctor, but you can鈥檛 doctor if you鈥檙e a dancer.鈥

5. Mae completed a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering

So apart from being an astronaut or trained doctor, Mae Jemison also completed a bachelor’s degree in Chemical engineering. She was extremely smart because of course this degree and adding a couple of other achievements isn’t such an easy feat to achieve. When she was in university, Jemison was quite active in co-curricular activities too seeing as how she was actively involved in theatre and dance productions. She also led the Black Student Union.

6. She worked as a Peace Corps

As noted, Jemison studied medicine too, which led her to become a general practitioner. She worked in Los Angeles before she went on to become a Peace Corps medical officer in Liberia and Sierra Leone. The more you get to know more about her accomplishments, the more you become impressed because she managed to accomplish so much within a short span. As a current 67- year- old now, her portfolio is one to envy and use as an example of what professional success looks like.

7. She was accorded the title of Science Mission Specialist

After getting inducted into the astronaut training programme, Mae was accorded the title, ‘Science Mission Specialist.’ In this position, Jemison was entrusted with the job of conducting scientific experiments related to the crew as they were aboard the space shuttle. Her medical training came in handy too during this venture and her getting this title was spot on. It is what she is popularly known by to date.

8. She was in Space for 8 Days

Mae Jemison spent eight days in space and even conducted experiments that focused on motion sickness and the weightlessness of the crew. She was looking more into the research and debate of gravitational pull. She spent a bit more than one hundred and ninety hours in space while conducting her experiments and linking them to all the knowledge she garnered by that point hence making amazing arguments and discoveries by the time she was coming back.

9. Jemison is the recipient of many awards

Mae Jemison has also been the recipient of a number of awards over the course of her career which makes her even more impressive. For instance, she was the recipient of the 1988 Essence Science and Technology Award, then she was also awarded the Montgomery Fellowship from Dartmouth College shortly after. In 1992, she was honoured with the Ebony Black Achievement Award, and in 1990, she became the Gamma Woman of the Year. Additionally, she has also been associated with the American Medical Association and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

10. She appeared on an episode of Star Trek

Imagine that! Mae Jemison has also made an appearance on the legendary TV Show, Star Trek. She began each of her shifts in space by constantly saying, 鈥淗ailing frequencies open,鈥 as a reference to Lieutenant Uhura (the only black female lead actress) on Star Trek. Also in 1993, she appeared in her own episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation where she played the role of Lieutenant Palmer. She actually killed it too which isn’t a surprise given how she was good at theatre too and how she is hugely talented.

The achievements of Mae Jemison are ones that you cannot help but envy and really admire all at the same time. She is a role model to many in the society and that’s exactly what sets her apart.
