Raven-Symoné’s Coming Out as a Lesbian: A Look at Her Journey


 

Raven-Symoné rose to prominence for her fascinating talent in acting. She is a famous American actress and singer who began her career as a child appearing in The Cosby Show between 1989 and 1992. Her sexual identity has been in the spotlight since 2013 when she had an interview with Oprah Winfrey. She was at the age of twenty-seven when she came out to talk about her identity. In the interview, Raven-Symoné said that she had been gay since childhood. However, she was afraid to come out because she did not want to face rejection from family and fans.

In the interview, she confessed that she was finally ready to come out and be true to herself. She said, “I’m tired of living a lie. I’m tired of hiding who I am.”  Coming out was a huge weight off her shoulders and it made her happier and free. She said, “I want to be able to hold hands with my girlfriend and not have to worry about what people think.” She added, “I realize that just living my truth of what I am, there’s one less person to fight me in my own head.”

Raven came out as gay to live her truth and help those of her kind struggling with their sexuality. She was one of the first major celebrities to come out as gay and inspired many other celebrities to come out and live their truth. She said, “I want to be able to live my life without having to worry about being judged.”

After coming out as gay, Raven was praised by her fan for her move to break down the stereotypes about the queer community. Since then, she has been so vocal as an advocate for LGBTQ rights. Her coming out was however not a walk in the park. She faced a lot of rejection for labeling and identifying herself as gay.

In August 2013, Raven drew attention from her fans after commenting on the legalization of same-sex marriage. She commented, “I was excited to hear today that more states legalised gay marriage,” she added. “I, however, am not currently getting married, but it is great to know I can now, should I wish to.”

Since coming out as lesbian in 2013, Raven-Symoné has been at the forefront of fighting for the rights of the LGBTQ community. In the 2016 Montreal Pride Parade, she was named the Grand Marshal.

Raven-Symoné has also had a rollercoaster in her relationships. Her marriage has proven to the world that she is living her truth. She was in a relationship with AzMarie Livingston, an American actress and singer between 2012 and 2015. In June 2020, she also married Miranda Maday, a social media manager. She is proof that you can be happy and successful even if you are gay.

Raven-Symoné coming out as gay has been an eventful journey that has not only helped her live her truth but also inspire others living in the shadows.
