Gloria Marie Steinem was born in 1934 in Toledo, Ohio She began work as a freelance journalist and from there worked her way up to earn her title as one of the world’s most famous feminists.

The word 鈥渇eminism鈥 means the advocacy of women’s rights on the basis of the equality of the sexes.

Gloria Steinem is a revolutionary figure in American history because she has changed the course of women鈥檚 rights in the United States. Steinem has made a major impact on society today in many ways,

Steinem was a pioneer of the second wave of the feminist movement in the ’60s and ’70s and continues to be a spokesperson for feminism and equal rights.

She fearlessly exposed sexism, was vocal about her abortion in a time when most people didn鈥檛 dare to be, and when she launched Ms. magazine, she brought domestic violence to light by being the first magazine to ever address the issue on its cover.

After more than half a century of advocating for women’s rights and other civil liberties, Gloria Steinem has become one of the most famous feminists of all time.

There are many amazing facts regarding her life from starting school late to still being in the game late in life. Below are more facts on her life.

1. Gloria Steinem Started School Late.

Due to the nature of his father鈥檚 work that involved a lot of moving Steinem didn鈥檛 see the inside of a classroom very consistently she was 11 years old.

Her family spent their summers in Clarklake, Michigan, where touring bands came to perform at her father鈥檚 dance pavilion.

When the weather got colder, the Steinems would pack their belongings into a trailer and head south to Florida or California selling antiques along the way to fund their journey until the following summer.

Her parents divorced when she was 10 years old and she moved back to Toledo with her mother and eventually enrolled in school full-time.

2.      She became Famous because of her article 鈥淎 Bunny鈥檚 Tale鈥

In 1963, while freelancing for high-profile outlets like Esquire and Vogue Steinem took on an unforgettable assignment: an expos茅 for Show magazine on the life of a waitress, or 鈥淏unny,鈥 at the  Club in Midtown Manhattan.

The idea was to expose the blatant objectification of women and sexist treatment that the Bunnies endured.

To get the story, the 28-year-old journalist came up with a fictional identity of a 24-year-old named Marie Catherine Ochs and worked undercover as a Bunny for an entire month.

Her two-part story, titled 鈥淎 Bunny鈥檚 Tale鈥 and published in spring 1963, revealed the abysmally low pay and rampant sexual harassment that Hugh Hefner鈥檚 Bunnies endured at the club

Although at the time it was seen as a glamorous job that young women competed to get.

The article went viral and Steinem became a household name after its publication.

3. Steinem鈥檚 Ms. Magazine was as a Special edition in Another Magazine.

When New York magazine launched in 1968, Steinem was an editorial staff member.

 After helping get the magazine up on and off the ground, she co-founded Ms. Magazine in December 1971 which originally appeared in the pages of New York as a special edition.

By July of 1972, Ms. was officially a publication on its own.

News anchor Harry Reasoner gave the magazine six months “before they run out of things to say.”

4. Gloria Steinem’s Mum was a Writer.

Before Steinem was born, her mother Ruth had been a newspaper reporter and editor. She used a male pseudonym so that her work would be published.

The nomadic lifestyle that her husband had chosen for the family was not working in terms of providing an income for the family.

Consequently, she suffered from depression and developed a dependence on tranquillizers, and a young Gloria became her caretaker. This later influenced her choice of having a family.

 鈥淚鈥檇 already been the very small parent of a very big child,鈥 she later told People. 鈥淚 didn鈥檛 want to end up taking care of someone else.鈥

5.  Steinem has Founded many Organisations.

Steinem identifies as a writer but she also happens to be the founder of many not for profit organizations.

To name just a few, there鈥檚 the National Women鈥檚 Political Caucus, which supports women running for political office;

 The Women鈥檚 Media Center, launched with Jane Fonda and Robin Morgan in 2005 to provide resources and opportunities for women working in media;

 Direct Impact Africa, which provides small communities across Africa with the resources and education needed to achieve economic self-sufficiency.

She also participated in the founding of the Coalition of Labor Union Women, Voters for Choice and Women Against Pornography among others.

6.  Gloria Steinem got Married!

Despite having once called marriage a 鈥渕odel for slavery law in this country,鈥

Steinem has never been shy about rejecting the idea of settling down and starting a family, so her decision to get married in 2000, at age 66, came as quite a surprise to many people.

She became the wife of British businessman and animal rights activist David Bale thus a stepmother to an oscar-winning actor (former Batman.

Her reason for changing her mind was that marriage had changed so much since the 1960s.

Sadly, the marriage was cut short as Bale died from Lymphoma in 2003.

7. Steinem Collaborated with the CIA during the Cold War.

Steinem founded Independent Research Service in 1958 to promote political involvement among young Americans abroad.

Therefore, she accompanied a delegation of students to 2 World Youth Festivals: one in Vienna in 1959, and another in Helsinki in 1962.

In 1967, she told the press that the organization had been funded largely by the CIA as the festivals were widely known as an outlet for the dissemination of the Soviet Union鈥檚 communist propaganda.

In the era of the cold war, it was interpreted as the U.S. government’s way to gather intel and also combat the spread of radical Soviet ideology by presenting a  democratic alternative.

Steinem insisted that the CIA鈥檚 financial support had no strings attached but was labelled a CIA operative.

8.  Steinem has Lived in the same building for 50 years

Steinem started renting an apartment between Park and Lexington Avenues on Manhattan鈥檚 Upper East Side in 1966 and she鈥檚 been living there ever since.

She finally bought the apartment in the 1990s and purchased another one soon after.

In 2017, she bought the third of five apartments in the brownstone building with plans to use it as a meeting place for travelling feminists.

After more than 50 years in the city, the native Midwesterner is every bit a true New Yorker as those who were born there and she鈥檚 never even learned to drive. 鈥淚 couldn鈥檛 live anywhere else,鈥 she told The New York Times.

9.  Steinem Created Take Our Daughters to Work Day.

In addition to being the founder of the Women’s Action Alliance, National Women’s Political Caucus, Women鈥檚 Media Center, Ms. Foundation for Women, and Voters for Choice (and so many others),

Steinem also created Take Our Daughters to Work Day, in 1992. Its purpose was to further educate young girls that there is a life outside the home.

The first Take Our Daughters to Work Day was celebrated in April 1993, and continues to this day.

10.  Gloria Steinem鈥檚 Early Activism influenced by Gandhi.

After graduating from Smith College in 1956, Steinem was awarded the Chester Bowles Fellowship.

Therefore, she spent two years in India participating in non-violent protests, contributing to Indian publications, and learning about Gandhian activism.

It was during this time that she became fully aware of gender inequality and the damage of racial caste systems.

She was also very much influenced by the efforts of activist Mohandas Gandhi and has attributed his work as a chief inspiration of her own.

The experience opened her eyes to the issues created by such a stark divide between a society鈥檚 richest and poorest members.

 She returned to the U.S. with a newfound passion for civil rights.

 


Steinem鈥檚 relentless work ethic hasn鈥檛 slowed with age.

She continues to give talks, champion new organizations, and publish works well into her eighties (her most recent book, The Truth Will Set You Free, But First It Will Piss You Off!, was released in October 2019),

 A symbol of resilience In 1986, at the age of 52, Steinem was diagnosed with breast cancer. However, after a lumpectomy and radiation treatment, Steinem was pronounced cancer-free.

 She’s still working tirelessly and regards herself as a “hopeaholic,”

Steinem makes regular public appearances and comments on current events e.g. #MeToo movement.

She probably won鈥檛 ever retire as she regards the fight for equality as being far from over.
