Born in October 1992 as Belcalis Marlenis Almanzar Cephus, she is known professionally and simply as Cardi B. She is both an American rapper and a TV personality who first gained popularity as an influencer on Vine and Instagram. Later on, she was then cast in the reality television series Love & Hip Hop: New York from 2015 to 2017. The show was depicting her as a person pursuing her music aspirations and it gave her a bit of a push in her music career. 1. Cardi was a member of a gang at age 16

Having grown up in a rough neighbourhood, joining a gang would seem appealing as it gave you the kind of security and assurance you couldn’t find at home. This was no different for Cardi B who had a rough childhood having grown up in the Highbridge neighbourhood of the Bronx. Naturally, she joined a gang by the name Bloods when she was only 16. 2. Cardi B took up stripping after losing her job at a supermarket

When she was 19 years old, Cardi had taken up a job at an Amish supermarket in Lower Manhattan. She, unfortunately, got fired and didn’t know what was next for her. She explained in one of her interviews that her former manager from the supermarket was the one who recommended she joins a strip club and try to see if she can get gigs there. She did.

3. Cardi agreed to become a stripper to escape poverty

After the advice her former manager gave her, Cardi B went on ahead and looked at stripping gigs which she got. She however admitted in a couple of interviews that her major motivation for doing so was to escape poverty and domestic violence as she was in a really abusive relationship at the time. Ironically though, she has admitted that becoming a stripper was her saviour in the long run and it was her way out of the hard life she had had up until that moment. She said,

“It really saved me from a lot of things. When I started stripping I went back to school.”

She however dropped out of college. Never really managed to complete it.

4. She doesn’t stomach cyberbullying at all

On her Instagram page, one of her fans thought it okay to troll her saying she looked weird without makeup. This was her response:

“I just wanted to let y鈥檃ll know that I feel comfortable in my skin, that I鈥檓 great, that I鈥檓 happy, my record is doing great, and just because you got so much hatred in your heart that when I do great y鈥檃ll wanna put it down. You can鈥檛, I鈥檓a stay on top with this face, with this natural face. Makeup or not, a b*tch is doing good.”

This went on to show that she really won’t take any kind of bullying laying down and she’s headstrong, always fighting for herself. After all, cyberbullying can really get out of hand sometimes and can easily affect your self-esteem. The idea is to not allow it to get out of hand like that by always fighting back.

5. She attended Renaissance High School for musical theatre and technology

For her high school studies, Cardi B attended Renaissance High School for Musical Theatre and Technology, a vocational high school. This is a school focused more on expounding on the talents of their students and helping them unfold more in that area. As their motto suggests, it is the kind of school where students are able to build their character, academic success, and passion in order to grow and achieve success through perseverance and collaboration.

When asked in a Wendy Williams show where exactly she got the idea to have the name ‘Cardi B’ as her stage name since it has no relation whatsoever to her official name, Cardi said,

鈥淢y sister鈥檚 name is Hennessy, so everybody used to be like 鈥楤acardi鈥� to me. Then I shortened it to Cardi B. The 鈥楤鈥� stands for whatever, depending on the day鈥�beautiful or bully. No one calls me Belcalis except for my family, my mother and my daddy.”
