Born in September 1996 as Jordan Terrell Carter, he is known professionally as Playboi Carti. He is a well-known American rapper who was initially signed by Awful Records before signing with Asap Rocky’s label known as ASAP Mob. After gaining a huge following early in his career, he got a major mainstream attention in 2017. He has never looked back again. What’s even more impressive, his first debut mixtape released in 2017 was included in the Billboard Hot 100 charting singles and his studio album of 2018 known as ‘Die Lit’ became number 3 on the US Billboard 200. 1. Playboi Carti has an insane love for Vampires

Carti always wants us to think he is a vampire as he is always comparing himself to the creatures. His love for vampires according to an interview he did with Complex began after watching ‘The Lost Boys,’ a 1987 cult classic that follows the tale of two brothers who relocate to California but end up fighting a gang of vampires. As he told Complex, Carti was drawn to the film because of the high sense of fashion and fascinating lifestyle. In his own words, Carti mentioned,

鈥淚 paused the movie and played my music over top of it and it looked so crazy. I thought, damn, I wanna look like this. That鈥檚 me, that鈥檚 Playboi Carti, a vampire on a dirt bike. Flying. Laughing and shit. The fangs, my grills. Long hair, dreads. Rock star shit. You know what I鈥檓 saying? It鈥檚 fire.鈥�

Thus when you see Carti looking like a vampire in his concerts and always using the vampire emoji in his social medis posts and captions, don’t be too surprised. As far as he is concerned, he is indeed a creature of the night.

2. Carti was introduced to music in church

Of course, it is ironic when you think of who Carti is and imagining him in church. The picture doesn’t really connect, but indeed Carti got into music by joining the church choir. He was introduced to music at a very young age by being a member of the choir in his church. Although he first joined the choir in order to look cool with the girls, he says he ended sticking in it for himself. He told Office Magazine in an interview that joining the choir inspired him and that’s where his appreciation for real music began.

Stage diving is all fun and games for new artists. In fact, it is an almost mandatory stunt for them. For outsiders, it usually looks like a very fun thing to do but Carti made it clear to Revolt TV  in 2018 that it is not really his cup of tea. In his own words, he said,

鈥淣ah, I ain鈥檛 fucking with it. Even when I used to do it, I ain鈥檛 fuck with it. It鈥檚 so crazy because if they don鈥檛 catch me, it鈥檚 a dub.鈥�

4. He used to work at H&M before his fame

H&M which refers to Hennes & Mauritz or simply H&M Group, is a clothing company based in Sweden that focuses on fashion clothing for all groups of people. That is, men, women, teenagers and even children. They have however franchised and have shops all over the world. So before the fame and the glamour, Carti used to work for this company while still in high school. He however had to quit after seeing how much popularity his music was getting especially from female fans. He recalled in a 2016 home video that women would approach him on the job telling him how much they enjoyed his music. That was when he knew he had to leave and focus more on his music career.

5. First album he bought was one by Lil Romeo

Growing up, Carti was drawn to child stars he could easily relate to. One such star was Lil Romeo. The first ever CD Carti ever bought was a Lil Romeo album when he was just in first grade. In an interview with SSENSE, he mentioned that one thing he recalls is how Romeo always used to spell his name in his raps and thus with time he became really good at spelling his name also. He became a big fan of Bow Wow too thus showing that his love for music started at a young age.

6. He was previously known professionally as Sir Cartier

At the beginning of his music career in 2012, Carti was performing under the stage name, $ir Cartier. In fact, his first mixtape released in 2012 known as ‘Young Misfit,’ was released under that name. This nine-track project took a different direction than what we typically know today as Carti’s style of music. He is typically known as a mumble rapper but as $ir Cartier, he articulated his words more clearly in a regular tone rather than the muffled baby voice that made him popular in later career as Playboi Carti.

7. He loves classic movies

As noted earlier, Playboi Carti loves classic movies and that is where his love for vampires began. He is a great fan of classic films from the 90s and early 2000s. He has even gone ahead to list ‘Donnie Darko’ and ‘Gummo’ as some of the sources of inspiration for his music. He is also a great fan of the timeless ‘Mickey Mouse’ disney cartoon.

8. He met ASAP Rocky at a house party

ASAP Rocky has played a huge role in Carti’s music career. After signing up with ASAP Mob, a label run by ASAP Rocky, his music got a huge fan base and his career got the recognition it deserved. He has also cited Rocky as his mentor and has collaborated with him on a number of projects both in the music and fashion industry. In 2016 for instance, Carti was featured in ASAP’s song, ‘Telephone Calls’ and this partnership soon resulted in Carti signing to AWGE and Interscope that same year. 9. Playboi Carti is not a big fan of face tattoos

When it comes to face tattoos and rappers, it’s like a rite of passage. It’s almost like a must-have, especially for the new generation of rappers. However, Playboi Carti admitted to Big Boy’s Neighbourhood in 2018 that face tattoos are not really his thing. He said,

鈥淚 never need 鈥檈m. I already have a birthmark. It鈥檚 kind of big. It don鈥檛 even make sense for me to get face tatts. You know what I鈥檓 sayin’? I was never into 鈥檈m.鈥�

He also mentioned that face tattoos never really get you females and since he is into them, he’s not going to risk turning them off with the tattoos. Goes to show he’s not going to get one anytime soon even though he has several tattoos on the rest of his body.

10. His big mentors for his career have been Ethereal, Father and KEY

Playboi Carti has always mentioned Father, Ethereal and KEY as one of his early mentors when he was still a senior in high school. Father founded the Awful Records in 2014 which is where Carti began his whle journey as a rapper. He was then later introduced t Ethereal, Atlanta artist who had also been signed under Awful at the time. Carti always appreciates and credits Ethereal for helping him find his style and sound that has managed to set him apart and make him a sucessful rapper today.
