The September 11 attacks which are commonly known as the 9/11 attacks were a series of airline hijacking and suicide attacks that were committed in 2001. The attacks were committed by 19 militants who have associated with the Islamic extremist group Al-Qaeda against the targets in the United States of America. These attacks were considered to be the deadliest ones in American history and it is still being talked about to date.

1. The New York Fire Department lost 343 firefighters

There were 75 fire stations with at least one member killed. The New York City Fire Department (FDNY) also lost its chief, first deputy commissioner, one of its marshals, one of its chaplains, and other administrative or specialty personnel.

When Battalion 1’s battalion chief witnessed the crash into the World Trade Centre’s North Tower, he immediately radioed a multiple alarm incident. 121 engine companies, 62 ladder companies, and 27 fire officers were dispatched to the scene over the next three hours.

2. There were many casualties of the attack

The four terrorist attacks carried out by Al-Qaeda on the World Trade Centre twin towers in New York and the Pentagon shook the United States to its core.

Nearly 3,000 people were killed, with over 2,600 killed at the World Trade Centre, 125 killed at the Pentagon, and 265 killed on the four planes. Over 6,000 people were injured. Her name was Christine Hanson. She was two years old and on her first trip to Disneyland. Christine’s parents were supposed to leave on September 10. According to Christine’s grandmother, Eunice Stylos Hanson, they changed their flight at the last minute because her father, a vice president of sales for a software company, had a work conflict.

This makes the impact of the September attacks more intense in that the child had a whole life ahead of her but it was cut short.

4. Most of the hijackers were Saudi Nationals who had gained entry to the United States and attended flight training schools without raising suspicion

Despite White House briefings on the Osama Bin Laden threat, intelligence agencies and domestic law enforcement failed to share critical information, according to CIA Director George Tenet. Following this, the United States launched an attack on Afghanistan, which served as an al-Qaida base. None of the nineteen hijackers, however, were Afghan nationals. Mohammed Atta, an Egyptian, led the group, and fifteen of the hijackers were Saudi citizens.

5. One plane crashed into a field in Pennsylvania

It is believed that the plane crashed in that location and killed the passengers inside it rather than the unknown target place because the passengers and the crew tried to take control of the flight deck.

Since the September attack which happened in 2001, 60% of the victims had not been positively identified as of October 2019.

6. Weeks after the attack, letters containing a highly lethal virus were delivered to newsrooms and it killed five people

Just after the September 11 attacks, there were a series of letters were delivered to newsrooms and congressional offices. After being opened the biological attacks killed five people. The refined nature of the virus raised fears that it could be state-sponsored.

The United States Intelligence agencies blamed Saddam Hussein for the virus but it was later discovered that the Iraqi dictator was not responsible for the anthrax virus. Later, the Federal Bureau of Investigation blamed an American scientist known as Bruce Irvins who committed suicide in 2008 and the case was closed.

7. More than 1,000 people were arrested in connection with the attacks

The PBS news service quoted Justice Berman who said that 1182 people had been arrested as of November fifth. The judge further said that the total number of people was unclear but 750 of them had been arrested on immigration charges and the rest were arrested as material witnesses.

Since 2002, there were roughly 780 detainees who were being held at the American military prison in Guantanamo Bay. Some of them have been charged with war crimes in the military commission system.

8. Fires continued to burn almost 99 days after the attack

Construction workers began utilising excavators and other heavy machinery after the pile settled enough. However, the area remained still unsafe. Fires in the underground raged on for months. The rapid surge of oxygen fuelled the flames every time a crane moved a sizable piece of rubble. The smoke and burning rubber, plastic, and steel in downtown Manhattan were overpowering.

The area was filled with hazardous dust and dangerous smells. Diesel exhaust, powdered cement, glass fibres, asbestos, silica, benzene from the jet fuel, and lead were all present in the air, especially in the days right after the towers collapsed when it was reported that only 20% of the employees at the site had masks that would protect their lungs.

9. Many hours were spent removing the debris at the World Trade Centre site

The clean-up effort at Ground Zero lasted for more than a year. While removing the debris, the construction workers found human remains in different places near the site of the Twin Towers. Furthermore, the environmental protection agency took several years to clean out the toxic dust from downtown apartments.

10. The victims of the attack were compensated later

The survivors of the attack were faced with many problems like respiratory problems and post-traumatic disorder. In 2019, the Senate passed a bill that ensured a fund was set up to compensate the victims of the September 11 attacks. The fund was set up in a way that it does not run out of money so that the first responders do not go back to Congress to ask for money.
