The Hmong people are an indigenous group in East and Southeast Asia. The Hmong people are classified as a sub-group of the Miao people in China. They mainly reside in Southwest China and countries in Southeast Asia. A very large diasporic community in the United States has more than 300,000 Hmong. The Hmong diaspora also stretches into smaller communities in Australia and South America specifically in French Guiana and Argentina.

The term Hmong is the English pronunciation of the Hmong’s native name. It’s a singular and plural noun, the “H” and “G” are silent. The Hmong people are known for their textile art which consists of traditional and modern textile arts and crafts.

Traditional Hmong textile includes basket weaving, hand-spun hemp cloth production, a unique form of embroidery, and batik dyeing. The most recognized modern style of Hmong textile art is a form of embroidery derived from story cloth also known as Paj Natub.

1. Brenda Song

Brenda was born on March 27, 1988. She is an American actress. Her career began when she started working as a child model. She made her screen debut on the sitcom Thunder Alley as a guest star. In 2000, she starred in the Disney Channel original film The Ultimate Christmas Present which won her a Young Artist Award.

She later signed a contract with Disney Channel and earned recognition for her role in the action film Wendy Wu: Homecoming Warrior, and in the comedy series The Suite Life. Brenda earned fame through her roles on both shows and two Young Hollywood Awards for the series. Brenda slowly made her transition into mainstream roles in films like The Social Network and in shows including Scandal, New Girl, Dads, Station 19, Pure Genius, and Dollface.

2. Cao Lu

Lu is a singer, actress, and television personality. She was born on August 30, 1987, and is known for being a member of the South Korean girl group Fiestar. She made her debut as a member of Fiestar under LOEN Entertainment in 2012. Later in 2016, Cao Lu was cast in her first acting role in the Korean show Real Men for the female soldier edition. In the same month, she was cast in We Got Married.

In 2017, she was nominated for and awarded the 2016 MBC Entertainment Awards but under different categories.

3. Cy Thao

Cy is a Laotian-born Hmong American politician who served as a member of the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2003 to 2011. Thao used the Boy scouts’ training, when he was younger, as a guide on how to blend into American society and teach him the values of community obligation. He is a graduate of the University of Minnesota Morris. In 2002, he was first elected for the position and didn’t seek re-election in 2010. Thao left office on January 3, 2011.

4. Dia Cha

Dia is a notable author and academic who has written books for adults and children. In 1989, Dia received the degree of Bachelor of Arts in anthropology from Metropolitan State College. In 1992, she was awarded a Master of Arts in applied anthropology from Northern Arizona University. She later received the degree of Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Colorado. Dia is noted for being the first Hmong woman to receive her Ph.D.

Dia was an Associate Professor of Anthropology and Ethnic Studies at St. Cloud State University. There, she taught courses in ethnic studies, cultural anthropology, Asian American studies, Southeast Asian communities, and Hmong studies.

5. Doua Moua

Moua was born on February 7, 1987. He is known for his roles as Spider in the 2008 film Gran Torino and Po in Disney’s live-action Mulan. Moua auditioned for minor roles until he auditioned for the film Gran Torino. Most roles he auditioned for took about a week for callbacks but Doua waited three months until he got a response. Before he got the role He was a semi-finalist for the Academy’s Micholl’s Fellowship for his coming-of-age script The Harvest.

6. Foung Hawj

Foung is a Hmong-American media producer and politician who is a member of the Minnesota Senate. He is a member of the Minnesota Democratoc-Farmer-Labor Oart and represents District 67 which includes the east side of Saint Paul in Ramsey County. In 1990, Foung received his B.A. in Media Arts and Computer Science from the University of Kansas and earned his M.S. in Applied Science and Technology from the New York Rochester Institute of Technology in 2001.

Foung has co-founded a number of Hmong-American organizations like the Center for the Hmong Arts and Talent, Gateway Food Initiative Co-op, the Minnesota Hmong Chamber of Commerce, and the DFL Caucus.

7. Houa Vue Moua

Houa and co-author Barbara J. Rolland wrote the book, Trail Through The Mists. The book tells the story of her early life in Laos during the Secret War and her harrowing escape to Thailand during the subsequent Hmong diaspora. Houa along wither her family was one of the early Hmong refugees to resettle in Wisconsin. There, she was the bilingual mediator for the emerging Hmong community and specialized in health issues.

8. Joe Bee Xiong

Joe was born on August 10, 1961, he was a Hmong American politician and activist who served as a member of the Eau Claire City Council. Joe was the first Hmong person in U.S. history to be elected to municipal government. He was a well-known advocate for Hmong culture and causes. His career began when he started working for the city of Eau Claire as a reserve police officer and as a social worker for Eau Claire County.

9. Noah Lor

Noah is an American politician in Merced, California, U.S. Noah is the first Hmong American to be elected as mayor pro-tempore in the City of Merced history. He was elected to the Merced City Council in 2007 and was re-elected again in 2011. Noah was elected to be Mayor Pro-Tempore on December 5, 2011. The mayor is traditionally appointed by the council and in many cases, the council member in the most recent election who gets the higher number of votes.

10. Pany Yathotou

Pany was born on February 18, 1951, she is a Laotian politician and member of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party. She was the chairwoman and governor of the Bank of the Lao P.D.R. which is the country’s central bank from 1988 until 1997. Later in 1988, she became a member of the National Assembly. From 2010 to 2021, Pany served as the President of the National Assembly of Laos. Therefore, Hmong people have contributed to National issues as leaders as well as business people.
