This culture of music and artistry thrives today because of the artists who paved the way in earlier years. Many singers call Pittsburgh home and they continue putting this city on the map musically.

Here are the top 10 famous singers from Pittsburgh. 

1. Wiz Khalifa

Cameron Jibril Thomaz, better known by his stage name Wiz Khalifa, is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, and actor. He was born on 8th September 1987 in Minot, North Dakota. With his parents in the military, he moved and lived in different places before finally settling in Pittsburgh. 

Wiz started writing and performing his lyrics before he was a teenager and his stage name means wise successor. Wiz is shortened from wisdom and Khalifa is Arabic for “successor”.  

The singer did the “Black and Yellow” song in a more radio-friendly and pop-oriented style. The song is a tribute to his hometown. Pittsburgh City Council declared 12-12-12 (12th December 2012) as Wiz Khalifa Day in the city.  He has 8 studio albums so far.

2. Christina Aguilera

Christina María Aguilera is an American singer, songwriter, actress, and television personality. She was born on 18th December 1980 in Staten Island, New York City. Her parents’ marriage wasn’t the best and so as a young girl, she used music to escape the chaos at home. When her parents separated, she moved with her mum and sister into her grandmother’s home in Pittsburgh. 

Known for her four-octave vocal range and ability to sustain high notes, she has been referred to as the “Voice of a Generation”. 

Her works, which incorporate feminism, sexuality, and domestic violence, have generated both critical praise and controversy, for which she is often cited as an influence by other artists. 

3. Phyllis Hyman 

Phyllis Linda Hyman was an American singer, songwriter, and actress. She was born on 6th July 1949 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Phyllis Hyman grew up in Pittsburgh towards the end of the city’s vibrant jazz renaissance. When she finished school, Hyman started her music career and successfully released several group and solo records.  

Her role in ‘Sophisticated Ladies,’ based on the music of Duke Ellington, won her a Tony nomination. She continued to record with well-known artists and on movie soundtracks until her death on 30th June 1995.  

In November 1995, five months after her death, Hyman’s posthumous album I Refuse to Be Lonely was released. It is a lyrical journey into her personal life and death.

4. Billy Strayhorn 

William Thomas Strayhorn was an American jazz composer, pianist, lyricist, and arranger, who collaborated with bandleader and composer Duke Ellington for nearly three decades. Strayhorn was born on 29th November 1915 in Dayton, Ohio, United States.  

His family soon moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His interest in music started when he was very young. He studied at the Pittsburgh Music Institute where he excelled as both a pianist and songwriter. He is one of Pittsburgh’s most famous musicians. 

Billy died on 31st May 1967 of esophageal cancer. There is a Historical Marker highlighting his achievements at Westinghouse High School in Pittsburgh. He was gay and was inducted into the Legacy Walk in 2015. 

5. Jackie Evancho

Jacqueline Marie Evancho is an American classical crossover and pop singer. She was born on 9th April 2000 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She grew up in a catholic family and began taking voice lessons from an early age. She would sing at events, churches, and nursing homes and would take part in musicals.  

Though young, Jackie is a distinguished Pittsburgher who is a typical example of courage and motivation and always pushes through to follow her dreams. She was on Forbes 30 Under 30 list of musicians in 2018, and has 9 albums so far.  

6. Mac Miller 

Malcolm James McCormick was an American rapper and record producer. He was professionally known as Mac Miller and was born on 19th January 1992 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was Jewish.

Miller began his career in the city’s hip-hop scene in 2007, at the age of fifteen. He loved mentioning his hometown and state in his tracks. These references include high schools he attended, parks and playgrounds where he hung out in his youth, local sports teams, and specific roads and suburb names. The singer used Pittsburgh locations for his music video shoots too. 

He died on 7th September 2018 from an accidental drug overdose due to “mixed drug toxicity”. He was buried in his beloved hometown of Pittsburgh. Two men were sentenced in 2022 for selling to him counterfeit drugs. 

7. George Benson

George Washington Benson is an American guitarist, singer, and songwriter. He was born on 22nd March 1943 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. When he was seven years old, he played the ukulele and was paid a few dollars. Then he started playing the guitar at the age of eight and started recording when he was 9 years old.  

Apart from playing the ukelele and guitar, George was also a singer and songwriter who loved soul jazz. He is fond of his hometown and credits it for molding musicians even as they head to the Big Apple City of New York. 

8. Girl Talk 

Gregg Michael Gillis is an American disc jockey who specializes in mashups and digital sampling. He was born on 26th October 1981 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He goes by the stage name ‘Girl Talk’ and began making music while he was a University student. 

He specializes in sample-based remixes, in which he uses at least a dozen elements from different songs to create a new song. Gillis began producing music with AudioMulch software, which he still uses, played live from a computer.  

He is an exhibitionist who removes his clothes mid-performance during live performances. “Girl Talk” is the opposite of what one would think when picturing a man playing music with a laptop.

9. Kellee Maize

Kellee Maize is an American rapper, singer, and songwriter. She was born on 18th January 1980 in New Berlin, Pennsylvania. Her parents say she was dancing and singing before she could walk and talk. She was an adopted child and only found out about her biological family when she was 22 years old.   

She started singing and writing poetry and songs at a young age to entertain herself. Kellee moved to Pittsburgh in her late teens and began rapping and singing on stage plus working part-time. 

Maize has recorded and released six full albums and several singles. She has a song titled “City of Champions”, which competed against Wiz Khalifa’s “Black and Yellow” as the Pittsburgh Steelers’ favorite “Road to the Super Bowl” song. 

10. Shanice 

Shanice Lorraine Wilson-Knox is an American singer-songwriter, actress, and dancer. She was born on 14th May 1973 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She has a rare coloratura soprano talent and does R&B, hip hop, soul, and new jack swing songs. At just 9 years, she starred in a KFC commercial with Ella Fitzgerald. 

Shanice is a talented singer and many of her songs are used as soundtracks. She also sings backup and does studio sessions and can be heard on Toni Braxton’s song “Unbreak My Heart”. She is married to actor and comedian Flex Alexander who is famous for the One-on-One sitcom.
