Folk and traditional music in Colorado has been an integral part of the local popular culture in the last century. The Colorado Bluegrass Music Society exists to promote Coloradan bluegrass music, and publishes a magazine called Pow’r Pickin’. The American state of Colorado has many music scenes and venues, especially in the larger cities like Denver and Colorado Springs. Listed below are the 10 Most Iconic Singers from Colorado springs.

1. India Arie

India Arie Simpson also known as India Arie (sometimes styled as india.arie), is an American singer and songwriter. She has sold over five million records in the US and ten million worldwide. She has won four Grammy Awards from her 23 nominations, including Best R&B Album.

India was born in Denver, Colorado, the daughter of Joyce and Ralph Simpson. Her musical skills were encouraged by both parents in her younger years. Her mother is a former singer (she was signed to Motown as a teenager and opened for Stevie Wonder and Al Green) and is now her stylist.

2. Jesse Carmichael

Jesse Royal Carmichael is an American musician, best known as the keyboardist and rhythm guitarist for the pop rock band, Maroon 5. He also has a solo project called 1863 and a side project titled Circuit Jerks.

In 1994, he joined with Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine and Mickey Madden, current bassist, and formed Kara’s Flowers. He recorded the debut album Songs About Jane with the rest of the band Levine, Madden, James Valentine, and Ryan Dusick.

3. Paul Whiteman

Paul Samuel Whiteman was an American bandleader, composer, orchestral director, and violinist. As the leader of one of the most popular dance bands in the United States during the 1920s and early 1930s, Whiteman produced recordings that were immensely successful, and press notices often referred to him as the “King of Jazz”. His most popular recordings include “Whispering”, “Valencia”, “Three O’Clock in the Morning”, “In a Little Spanish Town”, and “Parade of the Wooden Soldiers”.

4. Neyla Pekarek

Neyla Pekarek is an American cellist, vocalist, and pianist. She was a member of the folk rock band The Lumineers from 2010 to 2018. After finishing her degree in music education, Pekarek responded to a Craigslist ad posted by Wesley Schultz and Jeremiah Fraites.

Schultz and Fraites were looking for a cellist to join their band, The Lumineers. That’s how she ended up with the band. She later left to start a solo career in songwriting. Neyla has done really well in the music industry.

5. Jill Sobule

Jill Sobule is an American singer-songwriter best known for the 1995 single “I Kissed a Girl”, and “Supermodel” from the soundtrack of the 1995 film Clueless.

Her folk-inflected compositions alternate between ironic, story-driven character studies and emotive ballads, a duality reminiscent of such 1970s American songwriters as Warren Zevon. Autobiographical elements, including Sobule’s Jewish heritage and her adolescent battles with anorexia and depression, frequently occur in Sobule’s writing.

6. Ryan Tedder

Ryan Tedder is an American singer, songwriter, and record producer. As well as being the lead vocalist of the pop rock band OneRepublic, he has an independent career as a songwriter and producer for various artists since the mid-2000s.

This includes; Adele, Beyoncé, Leona Lewis, Miley Cyrus, Ed Sheeran, Jonas Brothers, Jennifer Lopez, Camila Cabello, Lady Gaga, Maroon 5, MØ, One Direction, Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, and Ariana Grande.

7. Nichole Nordeman

Nichole Ellyse Nordeman is an American contemporary Christian singer and songwriter. Nordeman was raised in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where she played the piano in church.

She got her start when she entered a Gospel Music Association (GMA) contest in Los Angeles, California and was noticed by a music producer. She has won multiple GMA Dove Awards, including two awards for Female Vocalist of the Year. Her best-known songs include “Why”, “This Mystery”, “Holy”, “Legacy”, “Brave”, and “What If”.

8. Tom Hamilton

Thomas William Hamilton is an American musician who serves as the bassist for the hard rock band Aerosmith. He has regularly co-written songs for Aerosmith, including two of the band’s biggest successes: “Sweet Emotion” (1975) and “Janie’s Got a Gun” (1989). Hamilton occasionally plays guitar (e.g. “Uncle Salty”, “Sick as a Dog”), sings backing vocals (e.g. “Love in an Elevator”) and on rare occasions, lead vocals (“Up On the Mountain”). He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001 as a member of Aerosmith.

9. Ruth Etting

Ruth Etting was an American singer and actress of the 1920s and 1930s, who had over 60 hit recordings and worked in stage, radio, and film. Known as “America’s sweetheart of song”, her signature tunes were “Shine On, Harvest Moon”, “Ten Cents a Dance” and “Love Me or Leave Me”.

While she enjoyed singing at school and in church, Etting never took voice lessons. She said that she had patterned her song styling after Marion Harris, but created her own unique style by alternating tempos and by varying some notes and phrases.

10. John Arch

John Arch is an American singer most well known for his work with the progressive metal band Fates Warning. Arch co-wrote the majority of the band’s songs with guitarist Jim Matheos, and was the band’s sole lyricist.

After their third album, Awaken the Guardian, was released, Arch was asked to quit his job or leave the band. Financial obligations made it impossible for Arch to quit his job, and he argued that he had shown 100% commitment to the band throughout the years. However, the band informed him that they had to let him go and started to look for another singer.
