Sui is such a fan of music (rock, punk and grunge) that her runway soundtrack is one of the most anticipated each season.

When she started her business she just wanted to design clothes for rock stars and rock music fans. Anna Sui targeted major boutiques selling clothes, records, magazines, and rock-oriented things.

Working within the confines of the rock music space was the entirety of scope in the beginning.

The New York Garment hosted more fashion companies鈥 headquarters than in Paris, Milan and London combined.

In 2009 New York鈥檚 reputation as a global fashion capital was threatened with the city鈥檚 once-bustling garment district facing extinction.

New York City was considering zoning changes that would allow the district鈥檚 factories to become offices.

A 1987 zoning amendment created the district to shield it from rising real estate prices, spurred by the redevelopment of nearby Times Square.

Anna Sui came up with an innovative way to raise awareness of the plight of the “Garment Centre”  aka New York’s fashion district: a T-shirt stating “Save the Garment Centre” with the email addresses of important New York officials on the back.

Today, the Garment District is located between 34th and 41st Streets, west of 6th Avenue. Although the area doesn’t go quite as far north as 42nd Street, in its heyday 42nd Street was a main artery of activity.

Hudson’s downtown was the fashion mecca, every once in a while designers like Betsey Johnson make an appearance.

Pop up boutiques would expose her to British stuff, rock-and-roll clothing and some stores that bought some of the beautiful crepe dresses and chiffon dresses from London.

For Anna Sui it was a great time to grow up in Detroit.

Not all fashion designers have a model clique as loyal as Anna Sui鈥檚.

After struggling to get her brand up and running for many years, Anna Sui鈥檚 supermodel friends Naomi Campbell and Linda Evangelista finally convinced her to do her own runway show in 1991.

With a little help (she paid the models with clothes) Sui pulled together a small show in the Meatpacking District and the rest is history.

She dressed actresses Winona Ryder and Nicole Kidman when she was starting out.

She鈥檚 had all the supermodels wearing her clothes.

Naomi was the big champion, and when the other girls would see Naomi or Linda [Evangelista] wearing her creations they would call and ask for or buy her clothes.

Anna Sui is celebrated in the history of fashion. She is known for her enduring designs and her skill in developing collections with cultural and historical references.

She is best known for her ready-to-wear collections with a boho-chic aesthetic. Originally from Detroit, Sui has mastered the art of combining bright colours with black while incorporating rich fabrics that reflect her culture and creativity.
