Brian Keith Adams was born on April 14, 1964, in Kona Hawaii. He was a professional wrestler from the United States. Adams is well-known for his time with the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), where he competed as Crush.

He also joined World Championship Wrestling (WCW), where he competed as Brian Adams. Antonio Inoki trained him in Japan. He was the WCW World Tag Team Champion twice, the WWF Tag Team Champion once, and the AJPW World Tag Team Champion once, among other titles.

He made a brief attempt at a boxing career in 2002 before resigning as a result of back and shoulder injuries. At their home in Tampa, Florida, on August 13, 2007, Adams’ wife found him dead.

1. Adams joined the US Air Force after graduating from high school

Brian Keith Adams was born in Kona, Hawaii. He was however raised in Kealakekua, Hawaii, and attended Konawaena High School. Adams started boxing after he enlisted in the US Air Force after graduating from high school.

2. Adams made his professional wrestling debut in 1986

In 1986, Brian Adams made his professional wrestling debut for New Japan Pro-Wrestling. However, following a tour in September 1987, his work visa expired, forcing him to return to the United States.

Adams joined the NWA Pacific Northwest Wrestling (PNW) organization in November 1987, earning the moniker “The American Ninja.” Upon arriving, he engaged in a conflict with Super Ninja that resulted in a loser-leaves-town bout that Adams won. Adams left PNW in February 1988 to return to NPW for a tour, under the masked persona, The Midnight Soldier.

Upon returning to Portland, he joined Billy Jack Haynes’s short-lived Oregon Wrestling Federation. In November 1988, he joined Mike miller in Memphis, to wrestle for Continental Wrestling Association. Adams and Miller traveled to compete on a tour for All Japan Pro Wrestling in January 1989. January 2 to January 28 saw the AJPW tour.

3. In 1990, Adams won the Pacific Northwest Heavyweight Champion

Adams ultimately made it back to the PNW in March 1989. He engaged in conflict with The Grappler, The Barbarian, and Buddy Rose while siding with Lord Jonathan Boyd and Carl Styles. Adams reprised the masked Midnight Soldier persona in April 1989, which prompted The Grappler to put up a $5,000 bounty for the mask.

A tag team known as “The Wrecking Crew” was formed in September 1989 when Adams unmasked, turned heel, and teamed up with The Grappler. Adams and Grappler were the Pacific Northwest Tag Team Champions for a time.

On April 21, 1990, the Pacific Northwest Heavyweight Championship was a vacant title. He won the tournament’s final match against Larry Oliver in Portland to claim the vacant title. On May 12, 1990, in Portland, Scott Norton defeated him for the championship.

4. Debuted for the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) as Crush

Adams made his World Wrestling Federation (WWF) debut as Crush in June 1990 while still working for the Pacific Northwest. He was the third member of the Demolition Tag Team Champions. The group applied the Freebird Rule once Adams joined Demolition.

The regulation permitted any combination of the three to defend the tag team crown, making Crush the first Tag Team Champion. On June 5, Crush made his live debut at a competition where he and Smash defeated The Rockers to retain their championships.

Demolition, including newcomer Crush, lost the championship to The Hart Foundation at the Summer Slam pay-per-view. Demolition lost in a two-out-of-three-falls match with Crush being pinned for the final fall to hand the title to The Hart Foundation.

5. Returned to PNW in 1991 using the Crush gimmick

Adams returned to the PNW after leaving the WWF and carried on with the Crush persona. Upon his comeback, he instantly won over the crowd and gained a reputation as a dominant wrestler.

He also won the Pacific Northwest Heavyweight Championship and the Pacific Northwest Tag Team Championship. Adams received the first of these two championships during this stint in the PNW while teaming with previous rival Steve Doll.

On July 27, 1991, in Portland, Oregon, they won the Tag Team Championship by defeating The Bruise Brothers. On October 12, 1991, in Portland, Adams won his second Pacific Northwest Heavyweight title by submitting Rip Oliver with the Full Nelson hold.

6. Adams went back to work for WWF in 1992

In 1992, Adams returned to the WWF as Crush, continuing to be a fan favorite. However, he introduced a new character—an easygoing surfing Hawaiian—who wore vivid neon tights and employed the Cranium Crunch, a new two-handed skull vice finisher.

On the May 9, 1992, edition of Superstars, Crush made his television debut in the WWF under his new persona by defeating Kato. At Summer Slam, Crush defeated Repo Man (Barry Darsow, who also played Crush’s old Demolition partner, Smash), marking his first pay-per-view appearance under the gimmick.

Afterward, Crush and Doink the Clown engaged in a feud. He was addressing the clown about his nasty practical jokes on kids at ringside when he was struck with a loaded prosthetic arm. Crush had to miss the 1993 Royal Rumble because of this.

The conflict culminated at WrestleMania IX when Crush was defeated after a second, identical Doink emerged from beneath the ring and hit Crush with the artificial arm.

7. On July 4, Crush injured his back

On July 4, 1992, Crush suffered a back injury while attempting to body slam WWF Champion Yokozuna during the Stars and Stripes Challenge. At the time, Yokozuna had a billed weight of 580 pounds (260 kg).

On the USS Intrepid, an aircraft carrier of the US Navy, the bodyslam challenge was held. The first wrestler to get Yokozuna off his feet was Crush, who was largely thought to have the best chance of everyone there, but his back gave out and forced him to stop.

Lex Luger won the challenge. Crush made an unsuccessful attempt to challenge Yokozuna for the WWF Championship on Monday Night Raw on July 12. After the match, Yokozuna performed several Banzai Drops to crush to send a message to Luger.

This strategy was employed to get Crush off of television while he recovered from his back ailment. He came back in October of the following year.

8. Career was cut short by a shoulder injury

On November 16, 2002, Adams was supposed to face Rick Zufale in his debut boxing match. The fight was to be held at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. Professional wrestler Randy Savage was to be in his corner.

This fight was scheduled to air on the Never Surrender boxing pay-per-view. Unfortunately, Adams hurt his shoulder while practicing for the fight and was unable to fight.

9. After retirement, Adams became Randy Savage’s bodyguard

Adams underwent surgery to treat his spinal injury, but the procedure rendered him unsuitable to wrestle. Adams’ longtime friend and wrestler-turned-rapper Randy Savage hired him as a bodyguard when he retired.

Randy Savage was then touring to promote his CD, Be a Man. According to rumors, Adams was living on money from an insurance policy with Lloyd’s of London. In Tampa, Florida, Adams expressed interest in starting a health club that would be a branch of fellow wrestler Marc Mero’s “Body Slam” training center.

Adams had two children with his wife. He was close friends with Mark Calaway, best known as The Undertaker in the WWE.

10. Adams died on August 13, 2007

Adams’ wife found him dead on August 13, 2007, at their house in Tampa, Florida. The medical examiner came to the conclusion that the combination of the painkiller buprenorphine with the muscle relaxant carisoprodol and the sedatives chlordiazepoxide and alprazolam was the cause of death.

The medical officer determined the drugs in his system were individually at therapeutic levels. However, their combination impeded his respiratory system enough to kill him. He was 43 years old at that time.
