Most Vietnamese people live in rural areas especially in the river delta regions of the north and south. Lately, most people have migrated to the cities of Ho Chi Minh and Hanoi.

The Vietnamese people love being active and they therefore actively take part in sports like soccer, table tennis, volleyball and martial arts.

This country has gifted the world with many great people like actors and actresses, activists, directors, scientists, and literal critics

1. Jonathan Ke Quan – Actor

Jonathan Luke Ke Quan is an actor who has been in the acting scene since he was a young boy.

He is a talented actor who also does stunt choreography. His first screening was in two Steven Spielberg productions.

Quan was featured in Indiana Jones, the Goonies and the Temple of Doom back in the 1980s.

In the Goonies, Quan was part of a group of genius children. He also played a thief in the movie It Takes a thief (1986).

In 1987, Quan was featured in a Japanese movie, Passengers. Quan also appeared in a short Japanese series between 1986 and 1987.   

His past roles are still etched in the memories of his fans since he has not been in front of the camera for more than a decade. Quan is set to feature in another blockbuster in 2021. 

2. Thich Nhat Hanh – Activist

Thich Hanh is a global spiritual leader, poet and peace activist. He is respected all over the world for his ground-breaking teachings on mindfulness, global ethics and peace.

Nhat was ordained as a monk when he turned 16 in Vietnam. He envisioned a kind of engaged Buddhism that met the needs of society. 

His activism in Vietnam led to his exile after he campaigned for peace. While he was away from home, his teachings on mindfulness led to the birth of mindful communities around the world known as sanghas.

Nhat’s teachings have been applied by politicians, business leaders, activists, and teachers.

3. Dustin Nguyen – Actor

Dustin was born in Saigon in 1962 but moved to the United States in 1975 after the fall of Vietnam to Viet Cong forces.

Upon settling in America, Nguyen became a successful actor, a director, a writer, and a skilled martial artist.

His most famous role was in the movie 21 Jump Street as Harry Truman Loki. He also acted in the movie VIP as Johnny Loh.

Nguyen’s other roles were in the films Little Fish, The Doom Generation, and The Rebel.

Currently based in Vietnam, Nguyen continues to produce award-winning films. Dustin made a cameo in the movie 22 Jump Street.

4. Hong Tran – Politician

Hong Tran was the first Vietnamese-American who ran for the U.S. Senate in Washington state. She was born in Saigon but her family fled Vietnam after the war in 1975.  

As the first female Vietnamese immigrant to run for office, her campaign was considered to be historic.

During her campaign, Tran earned votes from the Democrats because of her policies. The media also covered her campaigns with more progressives following her.

As a democrat candidate, her opponent was Maria Cantwell. Tran’s views on matters of the Iraq war got her more attention.  

5. Le Duc Tho – Diplomat

Le Duc Tho was born in 1911 and is a well-known figure in Vietnam’s history. He is remembered as a revolutionary, a diplomat, and a politician.

Tho was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1973 alongside Henry Kissinger who was the United States Secretary of State.

This made him the first Vietnamese and Asian to ever win a Nobel Peace Prize.

He had initially refused the award stating the Paris Peace Accords had been dishonoured by the United States and the South Vietnamese governments.

6. Pham Tuan – Retired Air Force Pilot

Pham is a retired pilot who worked for the Vietnam Air Force. It is believed that he has accomplished more than most of his countrymen have in their lives.

He was born in 1947 and was the very first Vietnamese to visit space. Tuan flew aboard the Soyuz 37 mission. His role was known as an Intercosmos Research Cosmonaut.

Upon landing back from Space, Pham was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union for his efforts.

He is still regarded as an important national figure and has received several awards as a decorated officer.

7. Madame Nhu – Former First Lady

She is popularly known as Madame Nhu and was the de facto First Lady of South Vietnam between 1955 and 1963. Madame Nhu was married to Ngô Đình Nhu, the brother and chief advisor to President Ngô Đình Diệm.

As the first lady, she was known for her tough and incendiary remarks that denounced anti-government protests by some Buddhist sects. She was also vocal about the U.S. influence and presence in the country.

Some of the policies that she passed included banning abortion, adultery, contraceptives, divorce and beauty pageants. The public was opposed to her policies terming them as hypocritical.

Nhu lived in exile in France after her husband and brother-in-law were assassinated in 1963.

8. Quang Trung – Emperor

Emperor Quang Trung was also known as Nguyễn Huệ. He was the second emperor of the Tây Sơn dynasty who reigned from 1788 to 1792.

Quang was one of the most successful military commanders in Vietnam’s history. Together with his brothers, they led the Tây Sơn rebellion.

They conquered Vietnam and overthrew the imperial Lê dynasty. The Trung brothers also conquered two other rival feudal houses of the Nguyễn in the south and the Trịnh in the north.

Emperor Quang died aged 40 after leading several years of military campaigns. His unachieved plans had included conquering the army of Nguyễn Ánh and his heirs.

9. Gia Long – Emperor of the Nguyễn Dynasty of Vietnam

Gia Long was another Vietnamese emperor who is credited with uniting Vietnam in 1802 before the establishment of the Nguyen dynasty.

He was the first emperor of the Nguyen dynasty from 1802 until 1820 when he died. Long also ruled as the emperor of Vietnam between 1804 and 1820; he was the last Nguyen emperor.

Before his reign as the emperor, Long was forced into hiding in 1777 when he was 15 years old. His entire family had been assassinated during the Tây Sơn revolt.

This emperor was also attributed for popularizing Confucianism in Vietnam.

10. Vo Thi Sau – Young Revolutionist

Last, on our list, today is Vo Thi who was a brave young schoolgirl. She fought as a revolutionary against the French who had occupied Vietnam.

At 14, Sau threw a grenade at a group of French soldiers which killed one leaving 12 injured.

In a separate incident, she threw another grenade at a Vietnamese man that had collaborated with the French. Unfortunately, the grenade did not explode and she was arrested by the French. 

Vo was held in three different facilities, the last one being Con Sơn Prison.

They tried her and eventually executed her in 1952. Vo was the first Vietnamese woman to be executed at the Con Son prison.

Despite her unfortunate ending, Vo is regarded as a national martyr and heroine just like Joan of Arch
