Virginia Beach extends a kind invitation to guests throughout the year to experience the oceanfront culture, flourishing local dining scene, arts and entertainment, maritime history, and family-friendly attractions.

Whether it’s a little chilly outdoors in December or you feel like cooling off in the surf and sand in the middle of a scorching July, Virginia Beach’s four distinct seasons have something to offer everyone.

Before you continue, it’s important to know when the seasons are in Virginia Beach as they might be different from yours depending on where in the world you’re traveling from.

Does Virginia Beach have good weather?

Virginia Beach has year-round average temperatures that hover around 70 degrees, making it the perfect destination for vacations in the spring, summer, and fall.

 Winter may also be a surprisingly enjoyable travel season because of the milder temperatures, the abundance of events, and the lower prices.

The summertime highs average in the upper 80s, which is similar to adjacent beaches, and the temps stay rather warm.

Is summer the best time to visit Virginia Beach?

Summer is usually the greatest time to visit Virginia Beach.

Summer. Simply saying it makes people think of sunblock, visors, tans, and the sun! Not to mention sunburn, sand, surf, seagulls, sandwiches on the beach covered in sand, sugary treats from Boardwalk vendors, etc.

Packing light is crucial for a beach vacation. You’ll mainly need T-shirts, shorts, and sunglasses, after all.

Putt-putt is for the summer. Or, as some people say, mini golf. Many of the miniature golf facilities in Virginia Beach are connected to a water park. 

Experience a minor league baseball game (or two or three). The lovely Harbor Park ballfield in adjacent Norfolk hosts games all summer long by the Norfolk Tides, a Triple-A farm team for the Baltimore Orioles.

In Virginia Beach, the East Coast Surfing Championships are held. Typically, the competition happens in late August. The event is fun even if you don’t surf because there are so many food and drink booths. 

Even if you’re a complete beginner, spending some time strolling around the 1500-foot Lynnhaven Fishing Pier and mingling with the local anglers is a terrific way to pass the time.

Everyone in Virginia Beach agrees that the best thing to do during the summer is to simply relax at the beach.

Enjoying the sound of birds chirping, children laughing, and, of course, jets flying while watching the waves crash on the coast.

Last but not least, don’t overlook Jamestown, which is only about an hour’s drive from Virginia Beach.

The museum, which is located on the site of the first European settlement in the New World, features gallery exhibits, a video chronicling the settlement’s history, and outdoor recreations of the ships that transported the first residents.

Virginia Beach grows during the spring. Remember to bring jeans because it’s not always warm enough to wear just shorts. Bring a raincoat or umbrella, storms are very often in the spring. 

Whether you are a college student looking to celebrate the impending end of the school year with friends, the sand, and the waves, a family searching for warm sandy beaches and intriguing attractions, or both, Virginia Beach is the ideal Spring Break destination.

In Pungo, there are plenty of pick-your-own options for strawberries, wildflowers, and other springtime vegetables.

If you want strawberries, you can’t go wrong by filling your bucket at Flip-Flop Farmer or Cullipher Farm Market.

Fish for Flounder on the Chesapeake Bay which is home to 348 species of finfish, including sea bass, tautog, and the local favorite, rockfish. 

Drink a beer outside at one of your favorite local breweries. Breweries like Commonwealth Brewing Company and Smartmouth Pilot House Brewery have ample outdoor seating where you can enjoy your beer in bliss.

 Fly a Kite at Mount Trashmore Park, the Atlantic Coast Kite Festival takes kite flying to another level.

Take in the blooming colors of spring and trek out for a hike at one of our state parks.

Dine on the water the water may still be too cold to go for a swim, but that shouldn’t keep you from enjoying the water all the same.

Watch the sunrise and sunset over the water over the Chesapeake Bay. Explore the Cape Henry Lighthouse pillar of local and national history.

Is Autumn the best time to visit Virginia Beach?

With smaller crowds and cooler temperatures, fall becomes the perfect time to explore the variety in nature that Virginia Beach has to offer.

Socially and climatically, shorts and t-shirts are appropriate in the fall because temperatures are still frequent in the 70s.

The autumn months at Virginia Beach are full of activities and the prices, people, and heat are at a pleasant low. After Labor Day, things in Virginia Beach continue as normal.

In fact, there is a noticeable uptick in activity in the city! Love is unavoidably in the air because we are in Virginia, a state known for its romanticism.

Fall in love with festivals the Neptune Festival Art & Craft Show, the International Sandsculpting Championship, fireworks, many live music stages, food vendors, the Grand Parade, and many other events are all part of this festival.

This is unmatched if you’re looking for a weekend filled with music, art, cuisine, and drinks. The Oyster & Seafood season is at its peak during fall.

Virginia Beach in the fall creates a natural, bird, or golfer lovers paradise. Fall flavors are freshly picked. Pumpkins, kale, blackberries, and wildflowers are good choices this time of year.

Is winter the best time to visit Virginia Beach?

Virginia Beach typically has cold, windy winters. You’ll need to dress fully covered in jeans, trousers, long-sleeve shirts, and sweaters.

Virginia Beach can prove to be one of the best places to enjoy this winter with everything from distilleries to delicious restaurants, fresh food, and winter treks.
