10 Famous People Who Suffered From Alzheimer’s Disease


 

Alzheimer’s Disease is the most common type of dementia there is. It is a progressive disease that usually ends up destroying memory and other important mental functions. It first begins with mild memory loss and then progresses to loss of ability to carry out a conversation and respond to the environment. It has not yet been made clear what exactly causes this disease as there is no single specific cause that has been identified by scientists so far. Rather, there are several factors that affect different people differently. Moreover, this disease is not a normal part of aging contrary to common belief. So who are the most famous people to ever have suffered from this disease? Here鈥檚 a list

1. Charles Bronson

Charles was an American actor known popularly for his features and physique. He actually gained international popularity and fame for his starring roles in action, western and war films. Initially, he started as a supporting player then later on as a leading man. In the 1970s, he was cited as the world鈥檚 number one box office attraction, being able to command over $1 million per show. During that period of course that money was a lot and thus was considered one of the most highly-paid box office actors. He, however, died in 2003 at the age of 81 and the Alzheimer鈥檚 disease was one of the illnesses he was diagnosed with. It wasn鈥檛 however recognized as the cause of his death.

2. Glenn Campbell

Born in 1936, Glenn was an American guitarist, singer and songwriter. In addition to his music career, he was also a well-known actor and a television host. Musically speaking, he was popularly known for a number of hit songs in the 60s and 70s. He was admirably able to release 64 albums in a career that actually spanned over a period of 5 decades. Pretty impressive, huh?! During this period, he was able to sell over 45 million records worldwide including 12 gold albums. In terms of his television career, between 1969 to 1972, Glenn hosted the Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour on CBS television. To be honest he did pretty well for himself and in addition to all these successful endeavours, he won 4 Grammy awards in 1967 under the country and pop categories. Unfortunately, Glenn passed on in 2017 and in 2011, he shared his diagnosis of Alzheimer鈥檚 disease with the world. He further helped spread more awareness of the disease by agreeing to be the subject of a documentary that was known as 鈥淕lenn Campbell: I鈥檒l be Me.鈥 This documentary basically highlighted his struggle with the disease.

3. Perry Como

Perry was an American singer, actor and television personality who unfortunately passed on in 2001. His career actually spanned for a period of more than half a century which is really a long time when you think about it. For 44 straight years, he recorded for RCA Victor after signing with the label in 1943. He was popularly known for his Christmas television specials and cardigan sweaters. His very laid-back style of singing as heard in songs like 鈥淧risoner of Love鈥 and 鈥淣o Other Love鈥 made him pretty famous. Unfortunately, he passed on in 2001 after being diagnosed with Alzheimer鈥檚 disease.

4. Casey Kasem

Born Kemal Amin in 1932, he was popularly known as Casey. He was an American DJ, actor and radio personality who was able to create and host several radio countdown programmes. His most famous one was 鈥楢merican Top 40.鈥 Over the span of his career, he was able to be the first actor to voice the character of Shaggy in the Scooby-Doo franchise and also voiced the character of Dick Grayson and Robin in the show, 鈥淪uper Friends.鈥 Unfortunately, he was diagnosed with Parkinson鈥檚 and later on Lewey Body Dementia which left him unable to talk in the long run. He died in 2014 after battling the illness.

5. James Stewart

Stewart was an American actor quite popularly known for his distinctive drawl and very unique screen persona. His film career spanned from 1935 to 1991 which was more than a decade. Very, very impressive to be quite honest. He was the perfect example of what the 鈥淎merican ideal鈥 should be all about in the mid-twentieth century. He is popularly known for his role in 鈥淚t鈥檚 a Wonderful Life鈥 and since then he was even recognized as the greatest American male actor. Over the span of his career, he received numerous honours including the screen actors guild life achievement award in 1968 and the AFI Life achievement award in 1980. He also received the presidential medal of freedom in 1985. In short, he did very well in his career and was pretty much celebrated. Unfortunately, later on, he developed symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease and eventually passed on in 1997 when he was 89 years old.

6. Norman Rockwell

Born in 1894, Rockwell was one of America鈥檚 most famous artists popularly known for his covers of Saturday evening posts which spanned a period of nearly five decades. He was a very well-known American painter and illustrator and his works over the years have had a broad popular appeal in the U.S. for their clear reflection and demonstration of this country鈥檚 culture. He sadly passed away in 1978 after developing dementia and lost the ability to work efficiently during the past 6 years of his life.

7. Ronald Reagan

Born in 1911 as Ronald Wilson Reagan, he was an American politician and actor who actually served as the 40th president of the U.S. I have read so much about Reagan but I never thought he was ever diagnosed with Alzheimer鈥檚 disease. Anyway, he served as America鈥檚 president for two terms. That is, from 1981 to 1989 and between 1947 to 1952 and 1959 to 1960, he served as president of the Screen Actors Guild. Very unfortunately though he passed on in 2004 after battling with Alzheimer’s. Looking at the silver lining though, his death brought about a great deal of attention to the disease. Just a month before his passing, his wife, Nancy Reagan released a very heartfelt statement saying, 鈥淩onnie鈥檚 long journey has finally taken him to a distant place where I can no longer reach him. Because of this, I鈥檓 determined to do whatever I can to save other families from this pain.鈥

8. Margaret Thatcher

Think women empowerment and the person who hits your mind is Margaret Thatcher. Sadly, not many people know that Thatcher actually suffered from Alzheimer’s towards the end of her road. Born in 1925, she was popularly known as the 鈥業ron Lady鈥 thanks to her no non-sense leadership style. She was the very first female British prime minister and actually the longest-serving one of the 20th century. During her leadership, she was able to implement economic rules and policies that were so uncompromising that they actually came to be known as Thatcherism hence also the nickname. Towards her end, she, unfortunately, suffered from dementia but the good thing is that her family was close by her side. She and her family however chose not to disclose this to the public just for the pleasure of enjoying privacy. Which is very justifiable.

9. Rosa Parks

Rosa Parks is honestly every black person鈥檚 dream. The audacity and balls she had are why we celebrate her in the first place. Born in 1913, she is well known for her very vital role in the Montgomery bus boycott. Thanks to the publicity and celebration this act gave her, she ended up becoming a civil rights activist in the civil rights movement of the U.S. that vehemently fought for the rights of black people. This was a period when racism was really high. She therefore later came to be known as the 鈥榤other of the freedom movement.鈥 She, unfortunately, died in 2005 because of complications brought about by Alzheimer鈥檚 disease.

10. Malcolm Young

Do you remember AC/DC? The way so many controversies were revolving around it and how people said they are agents of the devil? Well, this Malcolm we are talking about was a member of this band. He was actually the co-founder, rhythm guitarist, backing vocalist and songwriter of this group. He was with the band ever since it began in 1973 (apart from a brief absence in 1988) until retiring in 2014 because of health reasons. One of his greatest achievements is his induction into the rock and roll hall of fame in 2003. Very sadly he died in 2017 after complications emanating from Alzheimer鈥檚 disease.
