Death is an unavoidable and hated phenomenon by many, however, it is part of life. It is not easy to say goodbye to departed souls, especially to our loved ones. Daily, people lose their favorite actors.

In this article, we have discussed  20 black actors who recently died. Don鈥檛 be surprised when you find any of your favorite actors among them, since people die daily. We have as well showcased the amazing work and awards they won throughout their acting career.

The list below includes the 20 Black actors who died recently;

1. Chadwick Boseman

Chadwick Boseman was an American actor who gained fame globally after playing the Marvel Comics superhero Black Panther from 2016 to 2019 in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In 2016, Chadwick was diagnosed with stage III colon cancer and before 2020, it had progressed to stage IV. He never talked about his condition in public and only a few close members knew about his health condition. On August 28, 2020, Chadwick died at his Los Angeles home from complications resulting in stage IV cancer.

2. Michael K. Williams

Michael K. Williams was an American actor and was lucky to be featured in many successful films including 12 Years a Slave in 2013 and The Gambler in 2014 among others.

William’s nephew found him dead on the 6th 2021 in his apartment situated at Williamsburg in Brooklyn. The NYC Office of Chief Medical Examiner announced that William died due to a mixing of heroin, cocaine, p-fluoro fentanyl, and Fentanyl.

3. Clarence Gilyard

Clarence Gilyard was born on December 24, 1955, and died on November 28, 2022. He was active in his career from 1980 till 2022 when he died. Gilyard has been featured in several television, stage productions, and films which made him popularly known.

Gilyard died when he was 66 years of age. He became ill for so long which led to his death.

4. Stephen (tWitch) Boss

Stephen Boss was an American actor, television producer, dancer, and television personality. He featured in many films such as Blade of Glory in 2007, Stomp the Yard: Homecoming in 2010, Step Up Revolution in 2012, The Hip Hop Nutcracker in 2022, and Step Up: All In in 2014 among others.

Boss was born on September 29, 1982, in Montgomery, Alabama, U.S., and died on December 13, 2022, in Los Angeles, California, U.S. It is said that Stephen killed himself with a gun.

5. Roger E. Mosley

The American actor, director, as well as writer was born in Los Angeles, California, U.S. on December 18, 1938. He is best remembered for his role in the Television series Magnum, P. I as helicopter pilot Theodore 鈥淭.C鈥 Calvin. The series was aired from 1980 to 1988.

Mosley was involved in a road accident, he had a major car crash in Lynwood, California, on August 4, 2022. The accident left him in critical condition and was paralyzed from the shoulders downward. On August 7, 2022, Roger was announced dead from injuries.

6. Nichelle Nichols

Initially, Actor Nichelle Nichols started her career as a singer and dancer in Chicago. And later joined acting mostly in films, stage acting, and television. She has starred in many notable films such as Porgy and Bess in 1959, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock in 1984, The Adventures of Captain Zoom in Outer Space in 1995, and Surge of Power: The Stuff of Heroes in 2004 among others.

Nicholas died on July 30, 2022, in Silver City, New Mexico from heart failure at the age of 89. She is remembered to date for being the first actress African American woman to leave her handprint in front of Grauman鈥檚 Chinese Theatre.

7. Mary Alice

Mary Alice Smith famously known as Mary Alice was an American television, film, and stage actress. On December 3, 1936, Mary was welcomed to this world and she lived a long life and died from natural causes at 86 years.

Throughout her acting career, she has secured many awards and nominations for the good work she has been doing, including the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play in 1987 among others.

8. Jak Knight

Jak Knight became a popular actor after acting in his roles in the Netflix sitcom Big Mouth as DeVon and in the Peacock comedy series Bust Down as Jak. He began acting back in 2014 till 2022 when he died.

Jak had a short life and he died on July 14, 2022, at 28 years old. Jak is said to have killed himself with a gun and his body was found on the embankment in Los Angeles.

9. Moses J. Moseley

Moses was an American actor, writer as well as model. ‘The Walking Dead‘ was his breakthrough series. It made him popular across the world. Moses was born in Aiken, South Carolina, U.S. on December 23, 1990.

Moses died when he was only 31 years old. His body was found near the Hudson Bridge located in Stockbridge, Georgia on January 16, 2022, with gunshot wounds.  

10. Max Julien

 Max was one of the famous American actors, fashion designers, and sculptors. Max Julien rose to fame after playing his role as Goldie in The Mack film. He appeared in other films such as The Black Klansman in 1966, Up Tight in 1968, The Mod Squad, and One on One among others.

Max was blessed to have a long life and he died at the age of 88 in Los Angeles. He left a legacy behind and he is remembered to date.

11. Ricky Harris

Ricky was an American actor, producer, and comedian. He played his first movie roles in Murder Was the Case in 1994, and Poetic Justice in 1993. He became popular after playing his role as Malvo in Everybody Hates Chris.

Ricky Harris had a short life, and he died at the age of 54 in Los Angeles, California. His death was caused by a heart attack which is said to have attacked him again 2 years before his death.

12. John Beasley

John is among the black actors who have lost their lives recently. He died on May 30, 2023, at the age of 79. John had problems with his liver and the problem worsened causing his death.

The Hollywood actor appeared in many movies and Broadway plays. He acted in many notable films such as Rudy in 1993, The Sum of All Fears in 2002, and Sinister 2 in 2015 among others.

13. Harry Belafonte

Harry was a famous singer, actor, and activist. He has been active in his career from 1948 till his demise on April 25, 2023. He was a successful singer as well as an actor. He starred in many films such as Carmen Jones in 1954, Odds Against Tomorrow in 1959, and Uptown Saturday Night 1974.

He was lucky and won several awards throughout his career journey such as three Grammy Awards, Tony Awards, and Emmy Awards among others.

14. Lance Reddick

Lance Reddick was an active actor for four decades. He was best known for his roles as Cedric Daniels in The Wire from 2002 to 2008, and Chief Irvin Irving in Bosch from 2014 to 2020.

He was a family man and back in 1986 he married Suzanne Yvonne Louis, however, they later divorced in 1998. In 2011, Lance remarried, Stephanie Day and was her wife till his death on March 17, 2023, from heart disease.

15. Sidney Poitier

Sidney Poitier was both a Bahamian and an American actor, and film director. Sidney was born in Miami unexpectedly since his parents lived in Bahamian and they had visited Miami at the time of his birth. 

He joined and became a member of the American Negro Theatre where he landed his breakthrough in the film Blackboard Jungle as a high school student in 1955. Before his death on January 6, 2022, he had starred in several successful films such as The Defiant Ones in 1958.

16. Carl Weathers

Carl Weathers was an American actor and former professional football player who died at age 76 on February 2, 2024. He was best known for playing Apollo Creed in the Rocky films and had roles in Predator, Happy Gilmore, Toy Story, and The Mandalorian.

Weathers played college football at San Diego State before playing professionally as a linebacker for the Oakland Raiders and BC Lions. He transitioned to acting in the 1970s, becoming known for his role as boxer Apollo Creed alongside Sylvester Stallone in the Rocky film series.

Weathers had a varied acting career appearing in action films like Predator as well as comedies like Happy Gilmore and Arrested Development. In his later career, he received acclaim for his role in the Star Wars series The Mandalorian.

Weathers died at his Los Angeles home according to his family’s statement. While an unofficial death certificate listed atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, the cause of his death at age 76 has not been confirmed by Weathers’ family.

17. Hinton Battle

Hinton Battle was an accomplished American actor, singer, dancer, and dance instructor who died on January 30, 2024, at age 67. He won three Tony Awards for Best Featured Actor in a Musical, including for his original portrayal of the Scarecrow in the stage production of The Wiz, a role later played by Michael Jackson in the film.

Battle was a triple-threat performer on Broadway, known for his dancing, singing, and acting abilities. He originated roles in musicals like The Wiz, Dreamgirls, and Miss Saigon. His three Tony wins cemented his legacy as one of the most honored featured actors in Broadway history.

After a successful career on stage, Battle died at age 67 in Los Angeles at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. He left behind a lasting impact on musical theater through his iconic performances and award-winning contributions as a featured performer.

18. Andre Braugher

Andre Braugher was an acclaimed American actor known for his roles in the police dramas Homicide: Life on the Street and Brooklyn Nine-Nine. He won two Emmy Awards and was nominated for two Golden Globes during his career.

Braugher got his start in Shakespeare productions at The Public Theatre before transitioning to TV roles in shows like Kojak, The Court-Martial of Jackie Robinson, and The Tuskegee Airmen. He later starred in series like Gideon’s Crossing, Hack, and Men of a Certain Age.

Some of Braugher’s notable film roles included Glory, Primal Fear, City of Angels, Frequency, and Poseidon. He also had supporting roles in shows like Thief, The Good Fight, House, New Girl, and BoJack Horseman.

Braugher died of lung cancer at age 61 in December 2023 after being diagnosed just months prior. He had previously been a smoker but quit in 2010. Following his death, his co-stars remembered him fondly for his warmth, kindness, and immense talent as an actor.

19. Richard Roundtree

Richard Roundtree was an acclaimed American actor best known for portraying the iconic private detective John Shaft in the 1971 film Shaft and several sequels throughout the decades. With his suave, bold portrayal of Shaft, Roundtree became known as the first major Black action hero in film.

Roundtree’s groundbreaking role as Shaft influenced cinematic depictions of Black men, contrasting prior stereotypical roles. He helped pave the way for more leading roles for African American actors in Hollywood.

Roundtree also had significant roles in TV series like Roots, Generations, and Desperate Housewives over his long career. In 1993, he was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent treatment.

Roundtree passed away from pancreatic cancer at age 81 in his Los Angeles home on October 24, 2023. He left behind a lasting cultural impact for his portrayal of the trailblazing character John Shaft.

20. Ron Cephas Jones

Ron Cephas Jones was an acclaimed American actor best known for his Emmy-winning role as William Hill on the drama series This Is Us from 2016-2022. He earned four Emmy nominations for the role, winning twice for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series.

Jones also appeared in several other acclaimed TV shows like Mr. Robot, The Get Down, Luke Cage, and Truth Be Told. His film roles included Half Nelson, Across the Universe, Glass Chin, and Dolemite Is My Name. In 2022, he was Tony-nominated for the Broadway play Clyde’s.

Jones had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and underwent a double lung transplant in 2020. He passed away on August 19, 2023, at age 66 due to a longstanding pulmonary condition. Over his career, Jones established himself as a highly regarded character actor across television, film, and theater.
