These loyal and adorable animals are many people’s favourites as they are known for their outgoing and loving disposition as well as their charm. It is even said that pugs’ sole reason for existence is to please the owner which makes them really likeable. 1 Pugs are very ancient

The existence of pugs can be traced back to ancient history which shows that the animal has been around for quite some time. It is believed that pugs originated from China and existed before 400 BC. The animals were kept by Buddhist monks in their monasteries as pets. It is also said that the dog was the preferred pet for Chinese Emperors as they saw them as regal animals.

2 Pugs are low maintenance

Pugs are generally known for taking up little space in the house compared to other breeds of dogs. They are even described in Latin using the phrase ‘multum in parvo’ which means a great deal in a small space. Therefore, people who live in small spaces or prefer a minimalist lifestyle can take a pug as a pet as it will not take up much space in the house and they are also easy to maintain. This means that they can fulfil their desire of having a pet and at the same time live the lifestyle that they want.

3 Pugs do not require a lot of exercises

Pugs are easy animals to have as pets as they do not require a lot of work. When looking at the care that pugs need, it is evident that they do not require as much care as they only need about 30 minutes of exercise a day. Furthermore, pugs do not need to be bathed often as one can wash the pet at least once a month and they will be okay. Therefore, if one is thinking about getting a pug as a pet but is worried that they would have enough time to care for it, then they do not need to worry as a pug is the easiest animal to have as a pet.

Pugs have very unique characteristics that differentiate them from other breeds of dogs. Pugs feature a short and square-like body and they also have a pushed face. Furthermore, pugs have wrinkles on their face which in turn gives them a very distinctive look.  The wrinkles make them seem like they are always frowning. They also have short coats unlike other breeds of dogs that have a lot of fur. Furthermore, the pugs come in several colours including black, silver and fawn.

If you are looking for a sociable and affectionate pet, the pug is the right choice for you. Their sociable nature and friendliness make them very great companions for dog lovers. Pugs enjoy being around people and they will be very playful and adorable. This means that they are also good with children as they are not aggressive or rough. Pugs fall under a breed of dogs known as the Brachycephalic breed. This breed is characterized by a pushed-in face, a flat body and a shortened muzzle. The physical features give them an adorable look that most people like them. However, their physical structure has some health risks in that the dog may experience some breathing difficulties and are likely to suffer from heat exhaustion because their airways are restricted.

7 One pug once saved a royal

In the 1500s, Prince William of Orange led the Dutch in a rebellion against the Spaniards. While in the war, the Spanish soldiers tried to assassinate the prince in Hemming’s way but the Prince’s pug frustrated their plan. When the dog heard the Spanish soldiers sneaking to assassinate the prince, he started barking and thus alerting the prince and his guards of the soldiers. The heroic actions led to the pug being the official breed for the House of Orange.

8 There is a fraternal group named after the pug

 The Order of the Pug was formed by roman Catholics around the 1749s as a way for the pope to prevent Catholics from joining the Freemasons. As a replacement, the order of the pug was formed and a dog was its symbol. The reason dogs were chosen is because they are loyal and trustworthy. The pug was the animal chosen as the symbol and to express their loyalty they were to kiss the rear end of the porcelain pug.

9 Napoleon’s wife had a pug

Josephine the wife to Napoleon had a pig known as Fortune.  When Josephine was in prison before she got married to Napoleon, her dog used to carry messages from prison to her first husband. The dog was very protective of her master that it even bit Napoleon on their wedding night. This happened after Josephine refused to let the dog out of their room

10 Many celebrities have had pugs as pets

 

Pugs are mostly preferred by celebrities as they are small and very likeable.  Several notable personalities have been known to have had pugs as pets. Some of them include the Queen of England, Queen Victoria who loved pugs, the Italian fashion designer Valentino, author Beecher Stowe, Paris Hilton, Hugh Laurie and Jessica Alba.

Because of their sociable and adorable nature, pugs have garnered the love of many pet lovers with several gaining significant popularity. Social media has been a way that these cute animals have gained popularity and have even managed to create a large following on platforms like YouTube, Instagram and TikTok.  Some of the famous pugs include Jiff the Pomeranian pug mix who gained popularity for his tricks and cute costumes and Doug the Pug who has managed to garner more than a million followers on Instagram.

12 Pugs are calm

Looking at the temperament of these animals, one will quickly realize that they are even-tempered animals which makes them ideal to have them as pets. The only sounds that can be heard from the pugs are the snoring and snorting sounds as they do not bark as often as other dogs because of their even-tempered nature. Therefore, if pug enthusiasts want to adopt these furry creatures, they should definitely go ahead.

13 They did not always look as they are

Paintings and drawings from way back show that these furry animals did not look as they are today. The pugs in historical times had longer legs and more muscles on their bodies. However,  as they were continually bred by humans, they changed their forms to look the way they do now. The breeding had its consequences as it came with health risks because of their smaller bodies.

Pugs have a quite long lifespan in that the average lifespan for the furry animal is between 12 to 15 years. However,  the animals can live longer when they are raised in a stable environment. In South Africa, a pug named Snookie became the fourth oldest dog after living up to the ripe age of 27 years which is quite impressive considering the fact that their average lifespan is between 12 to 15 years.

15 A group of pugs are called a grumble

A group of pugs are known as a grumble. The pug is known as mopshond in Holland and when translated from Dutch to English it means to grumble. Also, the name most likely came from the fact that they snort and snore. They make for an adorable bunch when they are put together and they make the adorable grumbles.
