The first Norman monarch of England, William I, sometimes known as William the Conqueror and occasionally as William the Bastard, ruled from 1066 until he died in 1087. He was a Rollo ancestor and served as the Duke of Normandy beginning in 1035. By 1060, he had successfully seized the crown after a protracted struggle, and Normandy was under his control.

On December 25, 1066, William was sworn in as the ruler of England.
In Westminster, the event was held. The yells and applause during the coronation were misinterpreted by the guards as a revolt against the new king. They decided to create a distraction by starting fires in the nearby buildings. The incident caused panic, and people both within and outside the abbey began to flee.
A shaken William eventually completed his coronation, which will always be remembered as one of his most shameful moments.
