Mental health issues refer to a wide range of conditions that affect a person’s emotional, psychological, and social well-being. These issues can range from relatively minor, temporary conditions like anxiety or stress, to more severe and long-lasting conditions such as depression, bipolar disorder, or schizophrenia.

Mental health issues can impact a person’s ability to function in daily life, including their relationships, work, and other aspects of daily living. In recent years, there has been a growing awareness of the prevalence of mental health issues.

More and more people are speaking out about their own experiences in an effort to reduce the stigma surrounding these conditions. In this essay, we will explore some famous people who have succeeded in their fields despite living with mental health issues.

1. Demi Lovato

Many of us might recognize Demi Lovato from her hits such as Heart Attack and Sorry Not Sorry. However, Demi has been a celebrity since a kid rising to fame at age 10 after starring in the children’s television series Barney & Friends (2002鈥2004).

However, her fame and stardom have not been an easy journey in no way. At 18, Demi came forward as a victim of bullying as well as suffering from an eating disorder, depression, addiction, and even cutting herself.

While receiving treatment for the eating disorder, depression, and addiction, Demi was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. A diagnosis she has been coping with and managing ever since. Demi Lovato is a spokesperson for the Be Vocal: Speak Up for Mental Health campaign.

2. Michael Phelps

The Baltimore Bullet or Flying Fish are some popular names for the American competitive swimmer Michael Fred Phelps II. Phelps retired as the most decorated Olympian of all time with 28 medals.

He was diagnosed with attention-deficit-hyperactivity-disorder (ADHD) at age 9 while in sixth grade. By age 11, Phelps was a nationally ranked-swimmer.

ADHD is one of the most frequent neurodevelopmental diseases in children. Children with ADHD may struggle to control impulsive actions, pay attention, or be extremely active.

He could not focus in class as a result of ADHD but he focused on swimming and became a world-beater. For this, Michael Phelps is a world-class role model for children with and without ADHD.

3. Lady Gaga

From some memorable red-carpet outfits to timeless classics such as Shallow and Poker Face, Lady Gaga is the definition of fame. Full name Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, Gaga is an American singer, songwriter, and actress.

While her life may look glamorous from the 鈥榝an鈥檚鈥 perspective, Gaga claims it has not been easy or happy throughout. In 2020, Lady Gaga said she suffered from PTSD in an interview with Oprah Winfrey.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that’s triggered by a terrifying event. Either by experiencing it or witnessing it. Lady Gaga鈥檚 PTSD according to her is a result of repeated rape at age 19.

4. Adele

Adele is a 16-time grammy award winner and creator of hits like Hello, Easy On Me, and Someone Like You just to name a few. The lovely miss Adele has come out and openly discussed her struggle with postpartum depression.

In October 2012, Adele gave birth to her son Angelo Adkins. Following the birth, Adele claims she had really bad postpartum depression (PPD) which she says frightened her.

Like many new mothers suffering from the same, she did not take medication and was reluctant to talk to anyone about it.

5. Dan Reynolds

Dan Reynolds is the lead vocalist of the chart-topping band famously recognized as Imagine Dragons. It’s very rare finding someone who has listened to their biggest hits such as Radioactive, Natural, Believer, or Demons.

Despite the very rewarding musical career and commercial success of the band, Reynolds has in the past described himself as 鈥榙epressed as hell鈥. For years Reynolds has been open about his constant battle with clinical depression.

In his battle, Dan has avoided taking an antidepressant as he feels they affect his music and has instead gone for a more 鈥榟olistic鈥 route. He changed his diet, cut out sugar, and took up both yoga and meditation.

6. Vaslov Nijinsky

Born in 1890, Vaslov Nijinsky was a male dancer and choreographer. He is recognized as the greatest male dancer from early in the 20th century and was branded 鈥楪od of Dance鈥.

At around 1917, Vaslov began showing early signs of schizophrenia and in 1919 an official diagnosis was made. He was then consequently committed to an asylum which marked the end of his career.

Schizophrenia is a serious mental disorder in which people interpret reality abnormally. It may result in some combination of hallucinations, delusions, and extremely disordered thinking and behavior that impairs daily functioning, and can be disabling.

Nijinsky displayed many of the distorted behaviors typical of schizophrenia throughout his latter illness. These behaviors include impulsively jumping out of windows, attacking strangers on the street, and injuring himself.

7. Steve Young

 Steve Young is an NFL legend. He was a regular from 1984 to 1999 and won the championship 3 times in 1988,1989, and 1994 with the San Francisco 49ers.

For an athlete playing at this level, Steve Young, a quarterback, like many others was a superstar. Despite the fame, accolades, and amassing wealth from playing a sport, Young鈥檚 life was not perfect. He admitted to suffering from social anxiety disorder (social phobia) in his book QB: My Life Behind the Spiral.

8. Chrissy Teigen

Born in 1985, Chrissy Teigen is an American model, TV personality, and also wife to All of Me hitmaker John Legend. Following the birth of her first child, Luna, Chrissy said she struggled with mental health.

This was in the form of anxiety and postpartum depression. She described it as a sad existence with no highs for a few months.鈥

9. Prince Harry

The Duke of Sussex, Prince Harry is a member of the British royal family. Fifth in the line of succession, he is the younger son of King Charles III and Princess Diana and married Meghan Markle.

Harry鈥檚 mother, Diana, died in 1997 while he was 13 years old. After her death, Harry claims he shut his emotions down for the better part of two decades. 

It was not until his late twenties that Prince Harry ultimately began to see professional help. Harry has since then been encouraging people to open up about their own mental issues and struggles. Together with Prince William and Kate Middleton, he launched the Heads Together initiative in 2016 to “remove the stigma around mental health issues.”

10. Jim Carrey

鈥淕ood morning, and in case I don’t see ya, good afternoon, good evening, and good night!鈥 One of Jim Carrey鈥檚 most memorable lines from his industrious career. James Eugene Carrey is a Canadian-American comedian, actor, and artist.

Some of his biggest works include; Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Truman Show (source of the quoted line above), the Mask, and Dumb and Dumber. While Jim plays quick-witted characters who are mostly happy, off the screen it’s not all jokes and laughs.

For a significant portion of his life, Jim Carrey has struggled with depression. So much so that at one point he had no idea how he would overcome it. Through spirituality, perspective shifts, sustaining a sense of purpose, and abstaining from drugs and alcohol, he was able to overcome his particular depression.

11. Heath Ledger

鈥淲hy So Serious?鈥 Many have taken up the role of the joker (DC universe character) over the years but none embodies it like Heath鈥檚 performance on The Dark Knight. Heath was an Australian actor and music video director born in 1979.

Heath Ledger was suffering from major depression, anxiety, drug addiction, relationship problems bipolar symptoms, and childhood mental trauma. Following the success of Dark Knight, Heath was found unconscious in his bed by his housekeeper and massage therapist.

He was later pronounced dead later. His cause of death was cited as an accidental cause of death from the abuse of prescribed medications.

12. J.K. Rowling

Joanne Rowling, pen name J.K. Rowling is a British author and philanthropist. She is famous for having written Harry Potter, all 7 volumes from 1997 to 2007.

Before she found success with her first Harry Potter book, Rowling was poor and struggled with many years of depression. Rowling eventually found help for her condition and managed to turn her life around.

13. Ted Turner

Ted Turner is a famous American figure, philanthropist, and the founder of CNN. Additionally, he formally owned the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks and MLB’s Atlanta Braves.

Turner was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, also called manic depression. This is a condition where individuals have repeated, long-lasting feelings (episodes) of high (mania) and low mood (depression).

14. Isaac Newton

Sir Isaac Newton was an English physicist, author, alchemist, astronomer, theologian, and mathematician. Referred to as the natural philosopher his book Philosophi忙 Naturalis Principia Mathematica (Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy) shaped the philosophical revolution.

There are many recounts that claim Newton had a mental illness. The most quoted being bipolar disorder. However, some claim that he suffered from mental illness most of his life. This includes claims of manic behavior, depression, and suicidal thoughts.

15. Buzz Aldrin

Yes, even the man who literally walked on the moon feels low sometimes. Edwin Eugene Aldrin Jr. popularly called Buzz Aldrin is an American former fighter pilot, astronaut, and engineer. He was among the first 2 people to land on the moon alongside Neil Armstrong in 1969.

Following the sudden fame of the moon landing one would assume happy days for Buzz in the years to come. However, what followed was divorce, depression, and problems with alcohol. He did eventually seek help and upon solving his issues became the chairman of the National Mental Health Association.
