15 Interesting Facts About Great White Sharks

Great White Sharks are the world鈥檚 largest oceanic predators. They are said to grow up to 21 feet long and can weigh up to 5,000 pounds. They are found in oceans. These sharks are great swimmers and this explains why they are the most powerful predators as they can move fast and attack their prey.

They feed on fish, dolphins, whales, and seals. They have a powerful sense of smell; great vision and a great sensory organ that helps them detect prey easily. They are Apex predators meaning that they are on top of the food chain and can live up to 70 years. They least expect human beings.

1. They can grow up to 20 feet long and weigh up to 5,000 pounds

The Great White Sharks are said to grow up to 20 feet long with a weight of about 5,000 Pounds. They have a large body size because it allows them to feed on big prey and also keep their populations healthy. Since they are apex predators,  they need these large bodies to help balance the marine ecosystem

2.Their blood is poisonous

The highly toxic blood of great white sharks is another incredible biological feature. According to research, the arsenic and mercury levels in their blood are so high that they would kill most animals. Great whites, on the other hand, appear to be immune to this toxicity and are unaffected by it.

3. They have an extra sensory organ

By Brocken Inaglory –

Just like many other creatures have organs like smell, hearing, and taste, Great white sharks have an extra sensory organ that helps them detect the presence of prey from a distance and also vibrations in the water.

These senses are said to be mediated by specialized receptors which are electroreceptors and lateral lines. This explains why great white sharks are good predators as they can sense when the prey is around and they quickly attack as sound travels faster and at a distance in water than on air. Electroreception sense helps them detect the electrical fields produced by living creatures in the water.

4. They have 3,000 teeth in their mouth

All sharks are said to be born with teeth that are grown in conveyor-belt rows and the biggest teeth facing outside. The great white shark has 3,000 teeth in their mouth, which are arranged in rows that rotate in case one is lost. These teeth are triangular and serrated and their nature helps them to have the ability to feed on a variety of prey which includes fish, dolphins, and whales.

5. They are  warm-blooded

By AntMan3001 –

Unlike other sharks the majority of them are cold-blooded, Great White sharks are warm-blooded. They maintain a high body temperature than the surrounding water and this gives them the added advantage of being able to hunt in cold waters and can chase prey at a depth of 1500 feet also they can move fast and can store more energy than the cold-blooded prey. They are ranked as the few species of shark that can regulate their temperatures.

6. They can swim up to 25 miles per hour

According to, various research Great White Sharks can swim up to 25 miles per hour, with short bursts of 35 miles per hour. Their swimming speed is ten times that of an average human swimmer.  Therefore, they are mostly referred to as the 鈥済reat of swimming performance鈥. In addition,  they are referred to as the most powerful predators due to the swimming abilities that allow them to attack their prey easily.

7. Great White Sharks are found in all oceans

By Olga Ernst –

Great White Sharks are can be found in almost all oceans and seas. Where the water temperature ranges from 12 to 24 degrees Celsius. There are, therefore, referred to as epipelagic fish, which means they spend the majority of their lives at depths of up to 200 meters.

However, recent research has confirmed that great white sharks can migrate long distances. They migrate slowly and reach depths of approximately 900 meters. They have, therefore, been spotted in the open ocean at depths of up to 1,200 meters.  Thus, their concentration is most likely high in Cape Town, South Africa whereby the majority of the research is usually done.

8. Great White Sharks can jump completely out of the water

Great White Sharks can jump wholly out of the water. The behavior is called breaching. They normally jump out when hunting to confuse and attack the prey when they are not aware. They not only jump out as a defense mechanism from the predator or as a means of communication but also to regulate their body temperature.

9. Great White Sharks are  considered the apex predators

By Brocken Inaglory,

Great White Sharks are apex predators which means that they are at the top of the oceanic food chain and so no other oceanic animal can prey on the. They are the largest predator in the ocean since they are fast swimmers and have a great sensory organ that can help them detect when a predator is around.

10. They are believed to live up to 70 years in the wild

Great White Sharks are believed to live much longer than expected. According to research, it was confirmed that the Great White Shark can live approximately 70 years using a new scientific technique. Therefore, they have a slow growth rate that helps them live longer. They are, hence ranked as one of the longest-living sharks.

11. Female Great White Sharks tend to be larger than males

By Terry Goss,

Did you know that the female Great White Shark can be longer than the males?

Therefore, there is sexual dimorphism in great white sharks, with females being larger than males. Male great whites are typically 11 to 13 ft long, while females are 15 to 16 ft. However, it has been recorded that female great white sharks are larger than males due to various reasons.  Hence, just like other animals the female great shark reaches maturity at a large size than the male. In addition, they grow fast compared to males because they tend to store the energy that they have consumed from their food. While the male sharks use their most energy on hunting often.

12. Great White Sharks are believed to have the best eyesight of any shark species

Great White Sharks are believed to have the best eyesight since they have the power to detect things that are 30 meters far away from them. However, they not only have good vision in low light which could be one of the reasons why they attack at night. But also their eyes are adapted to detect differences in contrast. Hence they can easily detect prey against a bright sky or dark waters.

13. Great white sharks are not usually aggressive toward humans

By Olga Ernst –

Great Whites are believed to be less aggressive toward human beings. When they become aggressive with human beings it is said to be a mistake. Since they tend to confuse human beings with sharks, fish, and Dolphins out of curiosity trying to determine if human beings can be food. It is said that they usually avoid eye contact with human beings.

14. Great white Sharks often hunt at night

Great white sharks are the most powerful oceanic predators and it is believed that they like attacking and night when their prey least expects.  Also, their visions are not as good as daylight that is they have good vision in low light, but with their special sensory organ, they can detect any movement in the water and follow the smell.

15. Great White Sharks are considered a vulnerable species

By Pietervisser –

Great white sharks are considered one of the vulnerable species. This is a result of overfishing and accidental bycatch thus reducing their population. Overfishing and accidental bycatch occur when too many sharks are caught from their habitats and when a wrong target is done when fishing so they end up catching sharks.

This can be regulated by implanting measures to help reduce accidental catch by changing fishing methods and gears. With these, it鈥檚 easy to protect the species of great white sharks.
