15 Oscars Scandals That Shocked the World

When you think you’ve seen everything at the Academy Awards, something equally shocking happens. With so many stars (and, well, personalities) in one room, it’s impossible to predict how Hollywood’s biggest night will unfold — which is why millions tune in. There have been some odd fashion choices, hosting gaffes, and far too many snubs to count over the years. That’s not even half of it.

However, here are some of the 15 Oscar scandals that shocked the world. They include the following;

1.Will Smith Slapped Chris Rock

By TechCrunch –

Will Smith slapping Chris Rock in the face during the 2022 Oscars is the obvious top of the list. Chris Rock appeared to offend Jada Pinkett Smith by making a joke about her while hosting. Will Smith appears to chuckle along with the audience as the camera pans the audience, before walking up onto the stage and slapping Rock in the face. After resuming his seat in the audience, he begins yelling profanities at Rock.

2.Adrien Brody Kissed Halle Berry

Halle Berry presented the award to actor Adrien Brody during the 2003 Academy Awards ceremony. Upon receiving it, he took Berry in his arms and kissed her on the lips onstage.

The shocking and unexpected kiss made headlines after the show. Berry laughed at the time but later expressed her dissatisfaction with the situation. She claims she didn’t stop Brody because she couldn’t understand what was going on, and he has since come under fire for his actions.

3.Hattie McDaniel’s Award Went Missing

actor Hattie McDaniel (1939)-

Back in 1940, Hattie McDaniel’s Oscar win was one of the first Academy Award scandals in history. There were some scandalous elements. For starters, McDaniel was the first Black person to win an Oscar, and many people were outraged. In fact, Black people were barred from attending the event in 1940. Gone With the Wind and its depiction of slavery sparked much debate and continue to do so.

The twist in McDaniel’s story is that her actual Oscar award statue is still missing. It was donated to a university after her death, but it has since vanished. Even though this Oscar win was shrouded in scandal from the start, it was most likely stolen.

4.Anne Hathaway and James Franco hosted “one of the worst Oscar telecasts” in 2011

At least, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Other critics noted that Anne Hathaway appeared to be working hard, but her bright smile couldn’t compensate for Franco’s sluggish and unenthusiastic performance.

“Anne Hathaway at least tried to sing and dance and preen along to the goings on,” Goodman continued, “but Franco seemed distant, uninterested, and content to keep his Cheshire-cat-meets-smug smile on display throughout.”

5.’Crash wins Best Picture in 2006, defeating ‘Brokeback Mountain’

By impawards.com,

Crash, which beat out the trailblazing Brokeback Mountain, was another highly contentious Best Picture winner. Even the film’s director, Paul Haggis, has stated that he does not believe Crash deserves an Oscar. A 2015 poll of Academy voters asked to reconsider previous decisions found that many would reverse the decision and award the award to Brokeback Mountain.

6.Rob Lowe Sang in Cringey Opener

The 1989 Academy Awards began with a song-and-dance number performed by Rob Lowe and Eileen Bowman, dressed as Snow White. Bowman instantly started singing in a high-pitched voice and leaves the stage to interact with and shake the hands of the seated actors, all of whom appear to be uncomfortable and confused. The act goes on for 11 minutes, each one more cringe-worthy than the last.

Bowman was an uncredited actress hoping to make a name for herself with this performance. She, of course, did not. To make matters worse, Rob Lowe, who was already a star but whose performance was even worse than Bowman’s, was caught up in a sex tape scandal just a few weeks later.

7.”Adele Dazeem” is presented by John Travolta in 2014

By U.S. Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Chad J. McNeeley –

Idina Menzel is a Broadway star best known for singing “Let It Go” in Disney’s Frozen. However, John Travolta missed the memo and announced that the next performer would be “Adele Dazeem,” which caused some confusion.

8.#OscarsSoWhite

In response to the Academy’s lack of inclusion, the #OscarsSoWhite campaign was launched in 2015. That year, just two years after Black Lives Matter began, every actor nominated for an award was white. As a result, the hashtag was born.

This was a controversial topic. Many people were outraged by the lack of black nominees, and the opposing argument was that the Academy was in the business of selecting the best actors, not the most diverse array of actors. Since then, the issue has resurfaced several times, with the Academy rightfully under pressure to diversify its winners.

9.Anthony Hopkins ends up winning a surprise win in 2021

The 93rd Academy Awards concluded on a contentious note. Many people expected — or hoped — that the late Chadwick Boseman would win Best Actor, but he was defeated by The Father Anthony Hopkins. Interestingly, Anthony was not present to accept the award, so he later released a video in tribute to Chadwick, “who was taken from us far too soon.”

10.The lights went out on the ‘Parasite’ acceptance speech in 2020

The big winner at the 2020 Oscars was Parasite. However, as members of the cast and crew walked on stage at the end of the ceremony to accept the Best Picture award, the lights went out, causing the audience to gasp and groan. Right away, Tom Hanks, Charlize Theron, and other celebrities began chanting “Up! Up! Up!” so that the Parasite team could fully celebrate their incredible victory. The lights came back on instantly.

11.Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper deliver a steamy performance in 2019

When Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s 2019 remake of A Star Is Born was released in theaters in October 2018, fans immediately began “shipping” them as a couple, despite the fact that Gaga was engaged and Bradley was in a long-term relationship. The pair went on to give an emotional performance of their original song for the film, “Shallow,” at the 2019 Oscars, which only fueled the romance rumors. (Both of the stars’ relationships have ended since then, but they have never dated.)

12.In 2017, the wrong film is named Best Picture

Who could forget the fall of all fails at the 2017 Oscars? It was at the time the most perplexing and unbelievable blunder to occur live at the Oscars. When award presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway opened the envelope containing the winner’s name, they appeared perplexed and announced La La Land, when the Best Picture winner was actually Moonlight. The envelope containing the Best Actress card was apparently given to the presenters by mistake. Fortunately, Jordan Horowitz, the producer of La La Land, handled it well, saying he was proud to present the award to Moonlight.

13.Angelina Jolie and her brother show some serious PDA in 2000

By Foreign and Commonwealth Office –

Angelina Jolie was a Hollywood wild child before she became a mother and activist. For example, on the red carpet before the 2000 Academy Awards, she famously locked lips with her brother. The same night, after winning Best Supporting Actress for her role in Girl, Interrupted, she said in her acceptance speech, “I’m so in love with my brother right now,” which raised a few eyebrows.

14.A streaker interrupts the ceremony in 1974

When artist and photographer Robert Opel ran naked across the stage at the 1974 Academy Awards, he certainly made a statement. “Isn’t it fascinating to think that probably the only laugh that man will ever get in life is by stripping off and showing his shortcomings?” actor David Niven saved the show and kept things moving.

15.Dudley Nichols declines his Academy Award in 1936

Only a few years after the Academy Awards were established, screenwriter Dudley Nichols became the first of many to decline his Best Screenplay Oscar for The Informer. He declined the award in solidarity with the Writers Guild, which was on strike at the time.
