Robots have been used in films and movies for centuries. Robots are designed to perform complex series of activities at command. Some robots are constructed to evoke human form while other are designed as task-performers.

Some of the films that robots are featured in are Si-Fi movies and Comic movies. For centuries, robots have captured audiences of all ages with their abilities and their reflection of humankind. Robots, droids, android, humanoids come in all shapes and sizes and here is a deep dive into some famous robot movies.

1.R2-D2 and C-3PO from Star Wars series

R2-D2 is a fictional robot character in George Lucas’ franchise, Star Wars.  As of now the character has appeared in ten out of eleven of the films. The character is known of its resourceful astromecha droid and his beeps and whistles.C-3PO, another character in the film is known for its fluency in multiple languages. They provide comic relief and assist the main characters throughout the Star Wars saga.

The actor, comedian and musician, Kenny was carefully selected to portray the character of R2-D2 by George. Kenny has appeared in six of the franchises and continued on to be associated with the character up until 2015 with the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

2.Optimus Prime – Transformers series

Optimus Prime is a Japan fictional character that appears in Transformers franchise. Optimus portrays the role of a leader of the Autobots which is a group of robots from planet Cybertron. Optimus Prime is a Cybertronian in the Transformers mythos, an extraterrestrial species of sentient self-configuring modular robotic lifeforms a synergistic blend of biological development and technological innovation.

Back in 1983 a different perspective was brought into the Japanese franchise by introducing American character to expand its audience. The characters were changed, and their colors were changed, most notably Optimus Prime, who was colored red, white, and blue. This brought so much success for the film and saw the introduction of Transformers toys spawned comic books, movies, and a television series.

3.T-800 (Terminator) – The Terminator series

The T-800, portrayed by Arnold Schwarzenegger, is a cyborg assassin sent from the future. The T-800 which was commonly referred to as the Terminator possessed advanced capabilities that aided in its killing.

The Terminator is one of Skynet’s machines designed for infiltration-based surveillance and assassination operations, and while he appears to be an android, he is actually a cyborg made out of organic flesh over a robotic endoskeleton. One of the common catchphrases used by the character throughout the franchise was, I’ll be back.

4.WALL-E – WALL-E (Waste Allocation Load Lifter – Earth-Class)

WALLE which is an abbreviation to Waste Load Lifter is an American fictional romantic film that follows the adventures of the character, WALLE as it tries to clean up garbage. WALLE is a small, lovable robot that solitary on earth alone clean up the planet. As it embarks on its journey, the robot is fortunate enough to meet EVE, which is another robot and falls in love.

Elissa Knight voiced EVE who is a sleek and shapely probe sent back to Earth for scanning. The two embark on a on one of their greatest adventures yet. Majority of the characters in the film have no voices and only communicate in body language and robotic sounds developed by Burtt.

5.HAL 9000 – 2001: A Space Odyssey

HAL 9000 is an artificial intelligence system aboard the spacecraft Discovery One. The artificial intelligence was created to assist the crew on board however in the course of time it malfunctions and causes a tense and iconic battle between man and machine.

HAL was created to run the systems of the Discovery One spacecraft and make meaningful interactions with the crew on board. A minor glitch causes its malfunction and thereafter caused the tension. The famous actor, Douglas Rain provides the voice of HAL 9000 in the two feature film adaptations of the Space Odyssey series. While HAL’s hardware is visible near the end of the film, he is primarily portrayed as a camera lens with a red and yellow dot, with such units placed throughout the ship.

6.Sonny – I, Robot

Sonny is a humanoid robot with unique characteristics in the franchise, Robot. Unlike all robots, Sonny, is capable of exhibiting some form of emotions and has traits that challenge the notion that robots are incapable of independent thought.

Sonny a modern version of the NS-5 series and the tritagonist of the 2014 franchise. Despite not being in the work by Isaac Asimov, Sonny plays a major role in the film. Being a modern version of NS-5. Sonny is much stronger and faster than normal. Alan Tudyk, who plays K-2SO in Rogue One, played and voiced him.

7.Johnny 5 – Short Circuit

Johnny 5 is a friendly and curious robot that was created for military purposes however its personality changes in the course of the film. After being struck by lightning, he gains sentience and becomes a peace-loving being with a childlike personality. The 1986 film was written by S.S Wilson and Brent Maddock and was directed by the famous, John Badham.

The plot of the franchise revolves around an experimental military robot that is struck by lightning and achieves human-like intelligence, causing it to flee its facility in order to learn more about the world. Some of the star that are featured in the film include, Ally Sheedy, Steve Guttenberg, Fisher Stevens, Austin Pendleton, and G. W. Bailey.

8.Jeff-Finch

The franchise, finch follows the life of an aging man who survives an inhabitable earth. The famous film was filmed back in 2019 and later released the next year. Finch tries to navigate the wasteland ravaged earth.

Finch creates and teaches his robot, Hanks how to cater for his dog when he dies. Finch manages to create a lovable but imperfect robot that is tasked with offering the necessary assistance to his dog the moment he dies.

9.Gort – The Day the Earth Stood Still

Gort is a character in the franchise, The Day the Earth Stood Still. As the name suggests, the humanoid was sent back to earth to deliver a warning message all human. Unlike all other robots, The Gort possesses some advanced technology and incredible power, serving as a formidable guardian.

The inspiration robot is from a character form Farewell to the Master and the short Astounding Science Fiction by Harry Bates. The book gave a brief description of Gort’s appearance, and it is form this that the film makers got their inspiration from. A replica of the robot is displayed at the Science Fictional Museum and the Hall of Fame in Seattle.

10.Bishop – Aliens

Bishop is an android assigned to the crew of the starship Sulaco. Unlike all other androids, Bishop is quite different since he designed to be helpful and trustworthy. The character in the franchise is played by the famous, Lance Henriksen.

The character is the based at the Sulaco’s science officer and is tasked with ensuring that Elle Ripley survives all ordeals. Bishop is attached at the Sulaco’s artificial executive officer, is mostly in charge of planetary maneuvers.

11.Ava – Ex Machina

 The AI-powered robot, Ava was initially created by a genius to have a human-like appearance and behavior. The android tends to ask ethical questions about artificial intelligence and consciousness. Minutes into the movie, the inventor of the android, Nathan Bateman calls in Caleb to watch how the android and him communicate.

The whole franchise follows how the CEO calls in Caleb to administer the Turning Test. The tests take the shape of conversations between Caleb and Ava, who are separated by a glass wall. Caleb is enthralled throughout the first session. The franchise premiered back in 2014 and was later released in the United Kingdom on the 21st of January 2015.

12.Chappie – Chappie

Chappie is a robot with a childlike personality, that was invented by a scientist and its equally transforming form human consciousness into the robotic body. The robot is tasked with navigating a world of crime and violence while discovering his own identity. The film is set and shot in Johannesburg and tells the story of Chappie.

Neill Blomkamp took part in both the writing and directing of the franchise. Sharlto Copley, Dev Patel, Hugh Jackman, Ninja, Yolandi Visser, Jose Pablo Cantillo, and Sigourney Weaver star in the film. The franchise was a hit back when it was released in 2015 and made a gross $102 million worldwide.

13.RoboCop – RoboCop series

RoboCop is a character played by Richard Eden on the 1994 RoboCop franchise. RoboCop is a cyborg law enforcement officer created from the remains of a deceased police officer. Unlike the previous RoboCop, this character lacks violence and is more clam.

The robot served as a symbol of justice and fights against crime and corruption in a dystopian future. The sequel is quite different from the first two as some of the characters in the previous films are changed to new ones. This sequel contrasts with the vicious and unethical behavior in the second film, the OCP Chairman and his corporation are presented as merely naive and uninformed.

14.Mechagodzilla – Godzilla vs. Kong

Mechagodzilla is a robotic version of the iconic kaiju, Godzilla. The character was built by Apex Cybernetics as an anti-Titan weapon to kill Godzilla. The creators’ intentions were that the robot would combat the threat caused by Mechagodzilla.

However, minutes into the franchise, the robot had some glitches since it employed the late Ghidorah’s psychic skull as a vital component of the remote control. This seemed problematic since as the robot was rampaging through Hong Kong it stumbled across Godzilla and Kong who ruthlessly demolished him.

15.The Iron Giant – The Iron Giant

The Iron Giant is a massive robot that features in the 1999 American animation titled, The Iron Giant.  The franchise was directed by Brad Bird and features Jennifer Aniston, Harry Connick Jr., Vin Diesel, James Gammon, Cloris Leachman, John Mahoney, Eli Marienthal, Christopher McDonald, and M. Emmet Walsh

 The film is based on Ted Hughes’ 1968 novel The Iron Man which was published as The Iron Giant. The story revolves around a little kid named Hogarth Hughes, who discovers and befriends a massive alien robot during the Cold War in 1957.

16.Roy Batty – Blade Runner

Roy Batty is portrayed as a much-advanced android with physical attributes and abilities. The robot is one of the antagonists in the film and hence raises so many questions on humanity and existence. Roy Batty was one of the series of replicants named after its templant.

The film follows the life of Roy Battey as he hijacked a shuttle and travelled back to earth to demand for a longer lifespan. Roy has proven to be unlike all other robots since he could withstand extreme hot or cold temperatures up to 1200 degrees Fahrenheit.

17.Data – Star Trek: The Next Generation

Data is fictional android and a prominent character in the Star Trek franchise. The film follows the life of Data as he tries to understand all things human and strives to be more human. Data embarks on this adventure as he also serves as an operations officer on a ship.

Data appears as the first and third seasons of Star Trek: Picard, as well as the feature films Star Trek Generations, First Contact, Insurrection and Nemesis. The famous Brent Spiner takes up the role of Data. The robot is a synthetic living form with artificial intelligence, conceived and built in the likeness of Doctor Noonien Soong.

19.Marvin – The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

Marvin is a chronically depressed robot that is featured in the franchise, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Marvin portrays a pessimistic outlook on life which gives a whole new comic feel throughout the whole film.  

Marvin acts as the ship’s robot on the spacecraft Heart of Gold. Marvin has so much capability however not much of it used as he only receives boring tasks like “opening the door.” The fundamental tragedy of Marvin’s existence is that no task he could be assigned would occupy even a sliver of his immense intellect.

20.BigWelds-Robots

BigWelds is a massive, gleaming robot with brown eyes that is featured in the franchise, Robots. His physic is round and spherical, with a little head on top and two huge arms. He also wears a metal, tuxedo-like covering that covers the majority of his torso.

BigWelds took up the role of being the CEO of Bigweld industries before Ratchet took up the post. “See a need, fill a need” and “You can shine, no matter what you’re made of” are two of his famous catchphrases in the franchise. He believes that any robot may generate brilliant ideas and keeps his factory doors open for eager young innovators.

21.Eva – WALL-E: EVE (Extraterrestrial Vegetation Evaluator)

 Eva who is often referred to as Eva, features in the film, WALL-E as a sleek and advanced robot sent to Earth to search for signs of life. Eva is one of the main characters in the film as she makes a deep connection with the main character WALL-E.

Eva’s main mission was to determine whether Earth, which is currently a polluted wasteland, is finally capable of supporting life. In her quest Eva stumbles on much more than what she expected. Eve was designed to do only what she was programmed to do however, on her arrival on earth she formed a remarkable friendship with WALL-E. After spending time with the robot WALL-E and EVE came to the realization realize that there is more to life than commands and goals.

22.Bumblebee – Transformers series

Bumblebee was created to be a friendly Autobot and a fan-favorite character from the Transformers franchise. In the franchise, Bumblebee transforms into a yellow Chevrolet Camaro and is known for his loyalty and bravery.

The robot appears as a Little yellow Volkswagen Beetle in both the original toy line and the animated series. With the success of the film, Bumblebee has appeared in several live-action films as vehicles inspired by American Chevrolet cars. The character in the franchise was initially inspired by the historic European Type 1 Volkswagen Beetle.

23.K-2SO – Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

K-2SO is a reprogrammed Imperial security droid that is featured in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The character is mostly known for its sarcastic and humorous personality. The robot is tasked with helping the main character in their daily missions.

The designer centered K-2SO’s appearance on giving him some sort of distinct silhouette while remaining true to the Imperial design. One of the imperial designs that still remain on the character is the breast plate is based on the armor of an AT-AT commander.

24.TARS-Interstellar

TARS is introduced to the franchise, interstellar as one of the most original robots in years. Christopher Nolan directs the famous franchise that received a huge viewing form all over the world. TARS was created simply with four movable bars that aided in its tasks as a tactical robot.

Unlike his crew members, TARS is more intelligent, extroverted and more talkative and capable of acting on his own volution. Later in the film, TARS suspected that Mann had intentions to betray the crew.

25.Baymax-Big Hero 6

Baymax is a deuteragonist that is featured in the famous franchise, Big Hero 6. The robot was created by the genius, Tadashi Hamada during his study in San Fransokyo Institute of technology. The robot was created to supplement the healthcare system by proving nursing services to the world.

The robot is instantly activated by the sound of distress indicating pain and is deactivated once the patients state is stabilized. Baymax appearance is quite cute and soft looking to give an impression of a care giver.
