25 Fun Facts About Spring

‘Spring is nature’s way of saying, ‘Let’s party!’ – Robin Williams.

Fully dependent on the geographical location and climate zone, the four seasons (spring, summer, autumn or fall, and winter) are a natural cycle that plays a significant role in shaping the Earth’s climate, ecosystems, and human activities throughout the year. The Earth’s tilt, plus its orbit around the Sun plays a significant role in determining the change of seasons.

The term ‘spring’ comes from the Old English verb ‘springan’, which meant ‘to leap or burst forth’. Spring comes after winter and before summer, and is a time when nature awakens from its slumber, making it a season of renewal and growth. It brings with it a burst of vibrant colors, pleasant weather, and a sense of rejuvenation after the chilly winter months, filling the world with a sense of hope, energy, and excitement.

The appearance of fresh leaves on trees, the blooming of flowers, and the return of migratory birds invite us to embark on outdoor adventures, indulge in the beauty of blooming landscapes, and embrace the positive energy that comes with the spring season.

Here are 25 fun facts about spring.

1. Spring Starts In March In The Northern Hemisphere

During winter, the Northern Hemisphere is tilted away from the Sun resulting in shorter days and less direct sunlight thus the colder temperatures. As the Earth continues its orbit, the Northern Hemisphere gradually starts tilting back towards the Sun resulting in longer daylight hours.

The increased exposure to sunlight leads to a gradual warming of the region, marking the transition from winter to spring. There are two equinoxes (times when the Sun is directly overhead at the equator, resulting in equal durations of day and night across the globe) which occur twice a year, around March 20th or 21st for the vernal (spring) equinox and around September 22nd or 23rd for the autumnal equinox. The vernal equinox is what determines the timing of spring.

2. In The Southern Hemisphere, The Season Begins In September

Due to the opposite pattern of seasons in the southern hemisphere as compared to the Northern Hemisphere, caused mainly by the Earth’s axial tilt and its orbit around the Sun, spring begins in September in the Southern Hemisphere.

Around June 21st or 22nd, winter starts in the Southern Hemisphere which marks the shortest day and longest night of the year. During this time, the South Pole is tilted furthest away from the Sun, reducing daylight hours and colder temperatures.

As the Earth continues its orbit around the Sun, the Southern Hemisphere starts tilting back towards the Sun. By the time September arrives, the Southern Hemisphere reaches the vernal equinox, which occurs around September 22nd or 23rd marking the beginning of Spring.

During the vernal equinox, the South Pole is neither tilted towards nor away from the Sun. This results in roughly equal durations of day and night globally.

3. Spring Weather Is Unpredictable

Spring is a transitional season, marking the shift from winter to summer. During this transition, the atmosphere changes as it adjusts to new temperature patterns. This can result in fluctuations in weather conditions, with alternating periods of warm and cold temperatures.

Spring weather can be a mix of sunny and warm days, cold spells, rain showers, thunderstorms, and even snow in some regions. It’s advisable to stay updated with weather forecasts during spring and be prepared for potential changes in conditions.

4. Plants Grow and Bloom In Spring

One of the most noticeable aspects of spring is the blossoming of plants and the return of vibrant colors to the landscape. Trees, flowers, and other plants start to grow and bloom, as they respond to the increasing sunlight and warmer temperatures.

The combination of increasing daylight and the energy from the Sun triggers the growth and blossoming of plants.

5. Various Animal Become Active In Spring

Different animals adapt unique strategies to survive and reproduce even with the changes in seasons. Spring brings an abundance of food resources, thanks to the growing plants. Insects and other small animals multiply.

Many herbivores take advantage of the fresh vegetation and grazing opportunities, while predators benefit from the increased availability of prey. Animals that hibernate or reduce their activity during winter, such as bears, emerge from their dens in search of food.

6. Birds Migrate To More Favourable Areas

With the arrival of spring, animals that reproduce by laying eggs or giving birth, such as birds, reptiles, and mammals, begin constructing nests or burrows to protect and incubate their eggs or give birth to their young.

They actively search for suitable locations, gather materials, and establish safe spaces to raise their offspring because extreme cold weather does not favor them.

8. The Chinese Spring Festival Does Not Happen In The Spring

The Chinese Spring Festival, also known as the Chinese New Year or Lunar New Year, is the most important traditional festival in Chinese culture. It is celebrated based on the lunar calendar and falls on different dates each year but mostly between January 21st and February 20th.

12. Allergies Are More Common In Spring

Spring is a season that brings about a variety of allergens, leading to seasonal allergies for many people. These spring seasonal allergies are commonly known as hay fever or allergic rhinitis. One of the primary triggers of spring allergies is pollen.

Plants like trees, grasses, and weeds release tiny grains of pollen into the air for fertilization. When individuals with allergies inhale this pollen, their immune system reacts, leading to symptoms that include sneezing, itching of the nose and eyes, runny nose, congestion, and watery eyes. When this happens, it is best to visit a doctor for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate management strategies.

Hades, the god of the underworld, emerged from the ground and abducted Persephone, the daughter of Zeus and Demeter, taking her to the underworld to be his queen. Demeter became a grief-stricken mother and, in her anguish, she neglected her duties as the goddess of agriculture and fertility, causing the earth to wither and become barren. Crops failed, plants died, and the world was plunged into an eternal winter.

After negotiations, the daughter is reunited with her mother. As a result, Demeter’s joy and relief manifest in the form of abundant growth, blooming flowers, and fertile fields. This joyful reunion between mother and daughter symbolizes the arrival of spring and the rejuvenation of the Earth.

21. Birds Are More Vocal During This Season

Spring is a time of renewed vitality and activity in nature, and birds are not left behind. They not only migrate but also become more vocal thanks to the abundance of food resources during this season. They communicate with other birds through song as they look to find mating partners.

The food supports their energy needs for mating and raising babies and the songs add to the vibrant soundscape of the season.

22. Water Levels In Waterbodies Rise In Spring

The rise in water levels is usually due to winter snow melting. This increase in water levels is known as spring runoff. When spring arrives and temperatures begin to rise, the accumulated snow starts to thaw. The melting snow contributes to the water supply by adding large volumes of water to rivers, lakes, and streams.

Snow is vital in replenishing water resources, maintaining ecological balance, and supporting various aquatic ecosystems. It also contributes to the availability of water for agriculture, drinking water supplies, and hydroelectric power generation.

23. Spring Is An Ideal Time For Water Sports

As stated earlier, during spring, the melting snow adds large volumes of water to rivers, lakes, and streams and so they flow with greater intensity. This makes it an ideal time for activities like boat racing, rafting, surfing, white water rafting, flyboarding, jet skiing, kayaking, and other water sports.

24. Flooding Happens During Spring Especially In Areas Near The Mountains

Spring in mountain areas can bring about unique and dynamic changes in the natural environment. Due to the higher elevations and colder temperatures, the spring snow melting takes longer in mountainous regions as compared to lower-lying areas. Mountainous areas experience increased water levels downstream later in the spring or early summer.

In regions with significant snow accumulation, the spring runoff can result in flooding or high-water conditions in certain areas. Beware of lightning strikes, strong winds, and flash flooding.

25. Storms, Hails, And Thunder Are A Common Occurrence During This Season

Spring is a season known for its spontaneous weather patterns, and storms, hail, and thunder are not uncommon during this time. As the warm and cold air masses clash, the thunder sound is produced thanks to the rapid expansion and contraction of air surrounding a lightning bolt.

Then comes thunderstorms, heavy rain, gusty winds, and even tornadoes in some regions. Please note springtime hailstorms can cause damage to crops, vehicles, and property.
