Angels are supernatural creatures who serve God. They are mentioned in many religions such as Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. In Christianity, angels were created to be higher than humans in the hierarchy of creation. In the Bible, angels are messengers of God and they also guide and protect humanity. Angels also carry out God’s judgment while praising God in heaven. Some of the most well-known angels mentioned include Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael.

In the present world, angels watch over humans and protect them from harm. They are invoked in prayer and people ask for their help with a variety of needs. Angels have been described as fascinating creatures who remind us that there is something to life than what we can see.

Angels in the bible have different roles such as being Messengers, Protectors, Warriors, and Worshippers. The most significant roles of angels include guiding people, providing comfort, carrying out God’s judgment, and obeying the commands of God. 

It should be noted that there are 3 archangels that are well-known they include Gabriel, Michael, and Raphael. They have specific tasks that help God’s people as well as guide them. Archangels have been noted as the highest rank. Gabriel is a messenger, Raphael is a healer, and Michael is a warrior. Many believe that there is a fourth archangel known as Uriel who is of wisdom and light. Uriel is not recorded in the bible but many people believe he is an archangel.

1. Genesis 16:7-9, “An angel meet Hagar near a spring”

The angel of the Lord found Hagar near a spring in the desert; it was the spring that us beside the road to Shur. He said to her, “Hagar, slave of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?” She answered, “I’m running away from my mistress Sarai. Then the angel of the Lord told her, “Go back to your mistress and submit to her.” This verse shows how the Lord was just and fair to Hagar even though she was mistreated by Sarai. This is a great example of how angels were used as messengers.

2.Genesis 18:1-2, “Abraham’s Three Visitors”

The Lord appeared to Abraham near to greet the trees of Mamre while he was sitting at the tent door in the heat of the day. He lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, three men were standing before him. When he saw them, he ran from the tent door to meet them and bowed himself to the earth. In the verse, Abraham doesn’t know that the three men are angels but because of his hospitality and kindness, the Angels told him that he would have a son from his wife Sarai.

3. Genesis 19:1-3, “Two Angels visit Lot in Sodom”

Two angels arrived at Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gateway of the city. When he got up to meet them, he bowed with face to the ground. “My Lords, please turn aside to your servant’s house. You can wash your feet and spend the night and then go on your way early in the morning.” He said to them but the angels insisted on spending the night in the square. However, Lot asked them until they agreed to go to his house.

4. Genesis 22:11-12, “The angel of the Lord called Abraham”

The angel of the Lord called out to him from heaven and told him, “Abraham! Abraham!” Abraham replied, “Here I am” and the angel continued, “Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.” In the verse, Abraham was prepared to sacrifice Issac, his only son, to the Lord because God had commanded him to. However, just as he was about to, an angel spoke to him.

5. Genesis 28:12, “Jacob dreams about angels”

He had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. At the top of the Ladder, Jacob sees God himself. He speaks to Jacob and renews the covenant that he made with Abraham and Issac. The verse shows the communication between God and his people.

6. Exodus 23:20-21, “God’s Angel to prepare the way”

God said to Moses, “See, I am sending an angel ahead of you to guard you along the way and to bring you to the place I have prepared. Pay careful attention to him and obey his voice; do not rebel against him, for he will not pardon your transgression, because my name is in him.” This verse is about God’s promise to send an angel to guide and protect the Israelites on their journey to the Promised Land.

7. Exodus 32:34, “An angel is sent to guide Moses”

The Lord said to Moses, “Go, lead the people to the place that I spoke to you about; behold, my angel shall go before you, but I will not go up in the midst of you, lest I consume you in the way, for you are a stiff-necked people.” In this verse, Moses intercedes with God on behalf of the Israelites, and God agrees to forgive them.

8. Numbers 20:16, “The Israelites were Rescued by an Angel”

But when we cried to the Lord, he heard our voice and sent an angel who brought us out of Egypt. Now look, we are in Kadesh, a town on the border of your territory.” This verse shows how the Israelites were frustrated because they weren’t allowed passage to Edom. However, an angel helps them pass around Edom and they are able to continue their journey to the Promised Land.

9. Joshua 5:13-15, “Joshua talks to an angel”

Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn sword in his hand. Joshua went up to him and asked, “Are you for us or for our enemies?” The angel replied “Neither, but as commander of the army of the Lord I have now come.” Joshua fell facedown to the ground in reverence, and asked him, “What message does my Lord have for his servant?” The commander of the Lord’s army replied, “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy.” And Joshua did so.

This verse says that Joshua had an encounter with the commander of the Lord’s army. This was a great example of God sending his angels to fight for his people.

10. 2  Kings 6:17, ” Elisha saw a Chariot”

Then Elisha prayed. “O Lord, open his eyes so he may see.” The Lord opened the servant’s eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha. This verse shows that God is always with us.

11. Psalm 91:11-12, “His angels will guard you in all ways”

For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.” The verse is a beautiful promise of God’s protection and care for those who trust in him. In these verses, God has commanded his angels to guard us in all our ways.

12 Daniel 6:22, “An angel is sent to protect Daniel”

My God sent his angel, and he shut the mouths of the lions. They have not hurt me, because I was found innocent in his sight. Nor have I ever done any wrong before you, O King. In this story, Daniel was a faithful servant of God and he was thrown into the lion’s den because he refused to worship the King. God protected Daniel from the lions.

13. Daniel 7:10, “Myriads of angels”

A river of fire was flowing, coming out from before him. Thousands upon thousands attended him; ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him. The court was seated and the books were opened. This verse is part of Daniel’s vision of the four beasts and the Ancient of Days. However, he also sees God and he is surrounded by myriads of angels.

14. Daniel 10:13, ” Two angels come before Daniel”

But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me twenty-one days; and behold, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me because I had been left alone there with the kings of Persia. In the verse, Daniel was given a message about the future of Israel. However, a demonic spirit is trying to prevent Gabriel from delivering God’s message to Daniel. Michael, the archangel, comes to Gabriel’s aid.

15. Matthew 1:20, “An Angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph”

But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.” This verse shows how an angel assured Joseph that Mary’s pregnancy was miraculous. In context, Joseph was skeptical about Mary’s pregnancy because the rumors spread that she wasn’t a virgin. God sent an angel to Joseph in order for him to believe that her pregnancy was by the Holy Spirit.

16. Matthew 4:11, “Angels attended to Jesus”

Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him. In the verse, Jesus was being tempted in the wilderness. He was fasting for 40 days and 40 nights, during this time he was tempted by the devil three times. The verse was very significant because the presence of an angel at the end of temptation is a great reminder of how angels are there to give us support during difficult times.

17. Matthew 16:27, “The Lord’s angels”

For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done. The verse is a reminder that Jesus will return with his angels to judge the world. 

18. Matthew 18:10, “Angels in Heaven see God”

See that you do not look down on one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven. The verse shows the most humble and vulnerable people are precious to God. Their angels are always in their presence.

19. Matthew 24:31, “The Lord’s angels will be sent in the end”

And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other. In the verse, Jesus predicted the destruction of the temple as well as other events. During the end times, Jesus will send his angels to gather his elect from all over the world.

20. Luke 1:16-19, “An angel appears to Zechariah”

“Many people of Israel will bring back to the Lord their God. And he will go on before the Lord in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to their children and disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous to make ready to a people prepared for the Lord.” The angel said. Zechariah asked the angel, “How can I be sure of this? I am an old man and my wife is well along in years.”  The angel answered, “I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and tell you this good news.” 

The verse shows that John the Baptist played an important role in preparing the way for Jesus Christ. Angel Gabriel was sent to deliver the news of John the Baptist’s birth to Zechariah. 

21. Luke 2:8-12, “An angel appeared to the shepherds”

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” 

The verse shows that Gabriel brought the good news of Jesus’s birth to the shepherds. At first, the shepherds were terrified when they saw the angel, and Gabriel reassured them.

22. Luke 22:43-44, “An angel appeared to Jesus while he prayed”

An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground. In the verse, Jesus was in the Garden of Gethsemane praying before his death. He was in the midst of praying when an angel appeared to him and strengthened him.

23. John 1:51, “Angels ascending and descending”

He then added, “I tell you the truth, you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man. The verse is spoken by Jesus to Nathanael after, Nathanael confesses that Jesus is the Messiah and the Son of God. However, Jesus is telling Nathanael that he will see greater things and that he will witness the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.

24. John 20:11-12, “Two angels in Jesus’ tomb”

But Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look in the tomb and saw two angels in white seated where Jesus’ body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot. The bible verse show that Mary Magdalene went to Jesus’ tomb early and found it empty. She saw two angels sitting inside the tomb. It also showed that angels were present at the tomb to announce the good news to Mary Magdalene.

25. Acts 5:19, “An angel opened the doors”

But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the doors of the jail and brought them out. In this verse, it shows that the angel of the Lord saved apostles from the early church when they were imprisoned for preaching.

26. Acts 10:3-7, “An angel gave Cornelius instructions”

One day at about three in the afternoon he had a vision. He distinctly saw an angel of God, who came to him and said, “Cornelius!” Cornelius stared at him in fear. “What is it, Lord?” he asked. The angel answered, “Your prayers and gifts to the poor have come up as a memorial offering before God. Now send men to Joppa to bring back a man named Simon who is called Peter. He is saying that Simon the Tanner, whose house is by sea.” When the angel who spoke to him had gone, Cornelius called two of his servants and a devout soldier who was one of his attendants.

The verse showed that God would send angels to pass specific instructions to his people. It also shows that God loves all people and helps them.

27. Acts 12:5-8, “An angel helped Peter”

So Peter was kept in prison but the church was earnestly praying to God for him. The night before Herod was to bring him to trial, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and sentries stood guard at the entrance. Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared and a light shone in the cell. He struck  Peter on the side and woke him up. “Quick, get up!” he said, and the chains fell off Peter’s wrists. Then the angel said to him, “Put on your clothes and sandals.” And Peter said so. “Wrap your cloak around you and follow me,” the angel told him. 

The verse shows that God can send his angels to deliver his people from any situation. It also teaches Christians that angels can help us amidst difficult and hopeless times.

28. Acts 27:23-25, “An angel has a message for Paul”

Last night an angel of the God whose I am and whom I serve stood beside me and said, “Do not be afraid, Paul. You must stand trial before Caesar, and God has graciously given you the lives of all who sail with you.” So keep up your courage, men, for I have faith in God that it will happen just as he told me. The verse showed how Paul had a vision of an angel who told him that he would stand trial before Cesar. The verse is also a great example of how angels were used as messengers of the Lord.

29. Hebrews 1:14, “Angels serve those who inherit salvation”

Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation? The verse shows that angels are working for our good and for the good of the gospel. It also reminds Christians that angels are with us even when we face challenges.

30. Revelation 5:11-12,

Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands and ten thousand times ten thousand. They encircled the throne the living creatures and the elders. In a loud voice, they sang: “Worthy is the Lamb was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!” The verse is a great example of how angels gather around the throne of God and praise the Lamb.

All in all, angels are crucial to every important bible figure. They have been shown to deliver news as well as protect and save God’s people. It should be noted that angels have been recognized as significant beings in the telling of Bible stories. In the bible, angels are described as real beings who play an important role in God’s plan for the world. They are the protectors of Christians, especially in their time of need.
