 For quite some time, black players have been the overwhelming majority in the game, and as the basketball landscape changes, so does the demographic. Along with their black counterparts, white basketball players have taken the basketball world by storm. Given their immense talent, their rise in the game comes as no surprise. White players have made a significant contribution to the game’s exposure, making it an all-accessible game to anyone who prefers to play regardless of race.

These players haven’t been left behind as black players maintain their numbers in basketball, with a large portion of them playing professionally. Their established dominance on the court, displaying ball-handling expertise not seen before has seen them soar to greater heights and in the process achieve accolades along the way. 

More records will be set and broken as fresh talent keeps entering the basketball game and more white players audition for top leagues and competitions. 1. Larry Bird

Larry Bird played professionally in the National Basketball Association from 1979 to 1992. He’s known to have heard a spectacular time playing basketball and many fans and critics rank him among the best basketball players of all time. He got called up to the NBA All-Star teams 12 times. He led the Celtics in winning the 1981,1984 and 1986 NBA championships as he won two finals MVPs.

Alongside Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain, Bird is the only other player to win three consecutive regular-season MVP awards. He had a reputation for being a clutch performer performing with excellent play in high-stakes and high-pressure games. He finished second four times in the 1981, 1982, 1983 and 1988 regular seasons.

Dirk Nowitzki is a German former professional basketball player who played professionally from 1994 to 2019. Dirk is considered to be the greatest player of all time from Europe. With his in-court manoeuvres, he is regarded as one of the best power forwards to play. He was skilled in playing centre and small forward but he mostly played power forward and his versatility ensured that he performed exceptionally at the frontcourt.

He made 88% of his free throws, 40% of his 3-pointers and 50% of his field goal attempts. He won the NBA All-Star Three-point Shootout in 2006. Dirk was the only player to have at least 30,000 points, 10,000 rebounds, 3000 assists, 1,200 steals, 1,200 blocks, and 1,500 three-point field goals when he retired in 2019 With 31,560 points, 11,489 Rebounds and 3,651 Assists.

3. Jerry West

Jerry West is an American former basketball player. He was a point guard for the Los Angeles Lakers from 1960 to 1974. His silhouette was incorporated into the NBA logo. He had a tremendously highly successful career and got voted 12 times into the All-NBA First and Second Teams. He was also selected into the NBA All-Star Team 14 times. West was the 1972 All-Star MVP and won the 1972 title.

With 46.3 as his average points per game in a playoff series, he holds the NBA record for the highest points per game. He has been in nine NBA Finals and is the first player in league history to win Finals MVP honours despite playing for the losing team in 1969. West was chosen for the NBA 35th Anniversary Team and received induction into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 1980.

4. John Stockton

American former basketball player John Houston Stockton played for the Utah Jazz from 1984 through 2003 for the entirety of his NBA career. Along with his longtime partner Karl Malone, Stockton guided the Jazz to the only two NBA Finals appearances for the franchise in 1997 and 1998, both of which they lost to the Chicago Bulls.

The NBA record for career assists and steals belongs to Stockton, who was a ten-time All-Star. In 2009, for his solo career, and again in 2010, as a member of the 1992 United States Olympic basketball team, he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. The reliability and duration of Stockton’s career are particularly noteworthy. With 3,265 career steals, Stockton holds the NBA record for defensive play. With a career scoring average of 13.1 points per game, a 51.5 career shooting percentage, and a consistent three-point shot, Stockton was also a proficient scorer.

5. Luka Dončić

Slovenian professional basketball player Luka Dončić plays for the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA. Before entering the Real Madrid junior system, Dončić was a standout player for Union Olimpija in his early years. At age 16, he made history by being the club’s youngest player to make his senior squad debut for the academy. He won both the Final Four MVP and the EuroLeague MVP while leading Madrid to the 2018 EuroLeague championship. He was unanimously chosen for the NBA All-Rookie First Team after signing with the Dallas Mavericks in 2018, and he also won Rookie of the Year for the 2018–19 campaign.

He was named to the All-NBA First Team and was chosen four times to play in the NBA All-Star game. He has the most triple-doubles in Mavericks’ history. On the offensive end, Luka is a versatile player who can hit three-pointers, mid-range jump shots, floaters, and shots in the post with ease. He is regarded as an excellent facilitator, particularly on the pick and roll, and his basketball IQ, intangibles, and talents have been considered his main strengths.

6. Steve Nash

Stephen Nash is a former professional basketball player from Canada. He played 18 seasons in the NBA and was selected to the All-NBA team seven times and as an All-Star eight times. While playing for the Phoenix Suns, Nash won the NBA Most Valuable Player award twice. He received recognition for his ability to create plays, handle the ball, and shoot. He averaged 11.5 assists per game from 2004 to 2005, 10.5 assists from 2005 to 2006, 11.6 assists from 2006 to 2007, 11.0 assists from 2009 to 2010, and 11.4 assists from 2010 to 2011. He also won the NBA Skills Challenge in 2005 and 2010.

In 2004, when Nash returned to Phoenix, he assisted the Suns in going from a 29-53 record in 2003–04 to a 62–20 record in 2004–05, reaching the Conference Finals for the first time in 11 years, where he managed to win his first MVP title.

7. Nikola Jokić

NBA centre Nikola Jokić is a Serbian professional basketball player who plays for the Denver Nuggets. He has been a five-time NBA All-Star, has been selected to the All-NBA Team four times, including three times as a first-team pick, and has won the NBA Most Valuable Player Award twice, in 2020–21 and 2021–22. His exclusive position is centre. His career stats through the 2021–22 season are 19.7 points, 10.4 rebounds, and 6.2 assists per game. His play has been likened to that of a water polo player, particularly in terms of one-handed passes.

As a skilled finisher in the paint as well as a jump shooter from midrange and beyond the arc, Jokić is a diverse scorer. Jokić had a field goal percentage of.566 and a 3-point percentage of.388 during his first MVP season.

8. Kevin McHale

McHale played alongside centre Robert Parish and small forward Larry Bird on what many consider to be the league’s best frontline in history. The triumvirate steered the Celtics to three NBA titles—in 1981, 1984, and 1986—and five trips to the NBA Finals.

McHale played mostly off the Celtics’ bench for the first five years of his career, receiving the NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award in 1984 and 1985. From 1984 and 1991, the quick, long-armed McHale participated in seven National Basketball Association All-Star Games while possessing a wide range of offensive plays near the basket. In 1987, he was selected as a forward for the All-NBA First Team. In the seasons 1986–87 and 1987–88, he was the NBA’s top field goal shooter, averaging 60.4 per cent. Six times, McHale was chosen for the NBA All-Defensive First or Second Team.

9. Pete Maravich

From 1970 through 1980, American professional basketball player Peter Maravich competed in the NBA. With 3,667 points scored and an average of 44.2 points per game, Pete Maravich holds the record for most points scored in a single NCAA Division I game. He had a 10-year professional basketball career and played for three different NBA clubs until being forced to retire in 1980 due to injuries.

Maravich, one of the youngest inductees into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, was regarded as one of the greatest offensive minds of all time as well as one of the greatest ball handlers.

10. John Havlicek

 Rick Barry is a retired American professional basketball player. Barry is regarded as one of the game’s top scorers and all-around performers in history. He is the only player to have led the NCAA, ABA, and NBA in game-to-game scoring during a season. He is the all-time leader in scoring for the ABA in both regular seasons (30.5 points per game) and postseason play (33.5), and his 36.3 points per game in the NBA Finals are the most ever. Also, in Game 7 of the playoffs in any league, Barry is the only player to have reached 50 points mark. In both leagues, he is one of just four players to have been part of a championship team.

12. Bill Walton

Bill Walton is a retired professional basketball player from the United States. He was a UCLA Bruins basketball player who won three straight national collegiate players of the year awards (1972-1974) while guiding the Bruins to NCAA titles in 1972 and 1973 and an 88-game winning run. He led the Portland Trail Blazers to an NBA title in 1977 after being taken first overall in the 1974 NBA draft.

He was named the NBA Finals Most Valuable Player in 1977. In 1993, Walton was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. In 1986, Bill won his second NBA title with the Boston Celtics. He is a 1993 inductee into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. 

13. Chris Mullin

Chris Mullin is a former professional basketball player from the United States. He has two Olympic gold medals and has been inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame twice (once as a member of the 1992 United States Men’s Olympic basketball team and once for his career). During his college basketball career for the St. John’s Redmen, he was voted Big East Player of the Year three times and was a part of the 1984 U.S. Men’s Olympic Basketball team.

From 1985 through 2001, Mullin was a shooting guard and small forward in the NBA. Mullin was selected as the seventh choice in the first round of the 1985 NBA draft by the Golden State Warriors.  Between the 1985–86 and 1996–97 seasons, he was a member of the Warriors. Mullin continued his career with the Indiana Pacers, playing for them from 1997 through the 1999–2000 campaign.

Having played for his original team, the Warriors, he retired following the 2000–01 season. His included in the third Team (1990), Second Team (1989 and 1991) and First Team (1992) of the All-NBA.

14. Bob Cousy

Bob Cousy is an American former professional basketball player. From 1950 until 1963, Cousy was a point guard for the Boston Celtics. During the 1969–1970 season, he also briefly played for the Cincinnati Royals. He was a key player in the Celtics dynasty’s early years, earning six NBA titles in his 13-year stay with the team.

He was a 13-time NBA All-Star and the 1957 NBA Most Valuable Player. For eight consecutive seasons, Cousy led the NBA in assists, introducing a new combination of passing and ball-handling abilities to the league. As far as NBA point guards go, he is considered the first truly great one.

15. Peja Stojaković

Peja Stojaković, a former professional basketball player from Serbia, primarily suited up as a small forward. He was the first player born outside of North America to win an All-Star Weekend competition, and he twice won the NBA Three-Point Contest. At the time of his retirement, Stojaković’s 1,760 career three-point field goals were the 10th most in history.

Following two seasons on the bench, he had a breakout season in the NBA in 2000-01, averaging 20.4 points and 5.8 rebounds while shooting.400 from outside the arc in his first season as a starter. In the voting for the 2001 Most Improved Player Award, he came in second place. Stojaković, a three-time All-Star and member of the 2004 All-NBA Second Team, had success while playing with the Kings, who advanced to the Western Conference Finals in 2002.

He also had stints with the Toronto Raptors, New Orleans Hornets, and Indiana Pacers. As a member of the Dallas Mavericks in 2011, Stojaković won the NBA Championship. In 2022, he was admitted into the Greek Basketball League Hall of Fame.

16. Pau Gasol

Pau Gasol is a Spanish former professional basketball player. He was chosen for four different All-NBA teams and six NBA All-Star games, twice for the second team and twice for the third team. In 2009 and 2010, Gasol won back-to-back NBA titles with the Los Angeles Lakers. He was the first player from a country other than the United States to win NBA Rookie of the Year with the Memphis Grizzlies in 2002. He is recognized as one of the all-time great power forwards and one of the all-time best European players. Over his NBA career, Gasol amassed more than 550 double-doubles.

17. Bob Pettit

Bob Pettit is an American former professional basketball player. He spent all 11 of his NBA seasons with the Milwaukee/St. Louis Hawks (1954–1965). He received the NBA Most Valuable Player Award for the first time in 1956, and he did so again in 1959. Also, he received four MVP awards during the NBA All-Star Game.

Pettit led the Hawks to an NBA Championship by scoring a then-playoff record of 50 points in game 6, which the Hawks won 110-109 to seal the series. Up until 2021, Pettit’s 50 points held as the record for the most in a Finals closing victory. In 1970, Pettit, the first NBA player to surpass 20,000 points, was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

18. Jason Williams

American point guard Jason Williams played twelve seasons of professional basketball in the NBA during the late 1990s and the early 2000s. Williams was the starting point guard for the Miami Heat in 2006 when the team won the NBA Championship. 

Williams participated in collegiate basketball for Florida University and Marshall University. In the first round of the 1998 NBA draft, the Sacramento Kings chose him. Along with the aforementioned team, he also spent time with the Orlando Magic and Memphis Grizzlies. Williams was listed in 2007 as one of the top 25 players in the Heat’s history.

19. George Mikan

George Mikan played basketball for the Chicago Gears of the National Basketball League(NBL) and the Minneapolis of the NBL., The National Basketball Association(NBA) and the Basketball Association of America (BAA). He utilized the underhanded free-throw shooting technique. His size redefined the basketball as a “big men’s game.’ His prolific rebounding shot blocking, and talent to shoot over smaller defenders with his ambidextrous hook shot all helped transform basketball.

Mikan enjoyed a very successful playing career, taking home seven NBL, BAA, and NBA trophies in nine seasons, as well as the MVP award from the NBA All-Star Game and three scoring titles. He was a part of the first six All-BAA and All-NBA Teams, as well as the first four NBA All-Star Games. Due to Mikan’s dominance, the NBA made numerous key rule changes, such as adding the shot clock and the goaltending rule, as well as expanding the foul line eventually being known as the “Mikan Rule.”

20. Arvydas Sabonis

Arvydas Sabonis is a retired professional basketball player from Lithuania. He was awarded the Mr Europa Award twice and the Euroscar six times, making him one of the greatest European players of all time. He participated in several leagues, including the Spanish ACB League, and played in the NBA for seven seasons. Sabonis, a central player for the Soviet Union, won a gold medal at the 1988 Summer Olympics in South Korea.

He also won bronze medals for Lithuania at the 1992 and 1996 Olympic Games. Because of his exceptional court vision, shooting range, tough in-game mentality, and adaptability, Sabonis is regarded as one of the best big-man passers in the history of the game as well as one of the best centres overall.

In honour of his outstanding performance in international competition, Sabonis was inducted into the FIBA Hall of Fame on August 20, 2010. Sabonis was admitted as a player into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on August 12, 2011, after being named to it on April 4, 2011.

21. Marc Gasol

Marc Gasol is a Spanish professional basketball player. He has played in three NBA All-Star games and was a member of the All-NBA Team thrice. In 2013, while playing for the Memphis Grizzlies, he has voted the NBA Defensive Player of the Year. In 2019, he was part of the Toronto Raptors that won the NBA Championship.

During the 2007 NBA Draft, the Los Angeles Lakers selected Gasol 48th overall. He played for the Los Angeles Lakers, Toronto Raptors, and Memphis Grizzlies during his stint in the NBA. Since 2006, Gasol has consistently competed for Spain. In addition to two FIBA Basketball World Cup championships, he has earned two Olympic silver medals. He has two championships, two bronze medals, and one silver at the EuroBasket.

22. Mark Price

Mark Price played in the NBA for 12 seasons beginning in 1986. He spent a large bit of his career with the Cleveland Cavaliers and he later on played for Washington Bullets, Golden State Warriors and the Orlando Magic in his final three seasons. He is a four-time NBA All-Star and was selected to the All-NBA first team once in 1993.

23. Kevin Love

Kevin Love plays professionally for the Miami Heat in the NBA. He was selected five times in the NBA All-Star and two times in the All-NBA Second Team. He led the league in rebounding and also won the NBA Most Improved Player in 2011. Alongside LeBron James, Love led the Cavaliers to the 2016 NBA championship where they defeated the Golden State Warriors.

24. Gail Goodrich

Gail Goodrich played a pivotal role in helping UCLA topple Michigan in the 1965 NCAA championship game. He scored a record 42 points during that game. He was drafted as a territorial pick in 1965 by the Los Angeles Lakers. During the 1971-72 season with the Lakers, he was instrumental in the 33 consecutive wins record which was an NBA history record at that time. He led the Lakers to win their first title since relocating to Los Angeles. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1996.

25. Tom Chambers

He played forward in the NBA from 1981 to 1997. He was selected to four All-Star Games and twice made the All-NBA Second Team. In Israel, he was the Israeli League Champion while playing for Maccabi Tel Aviv. In 2021, he was nominated for induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, but he did not make it to the list of finalists. Chambers finished his NBA career with a total of 20,049 points scored.

26. Jeff Hornacek

Jeff played basketball for 14 years, from 1986 to 2000. The Phoenix Suns selected him with the 46th overall pick in the second round of the 1986 NBA Draft by this. With an 87.7 career free throw percentage, he ranks 16th all-time in the NBA.

In addition to winning the All-Star 2-Ball Challenge with Utah Jazz player Natalie Williams, Hornacek won the NBA three-point competition twice. He retired from playing after the 1999-2000 season while he was a player for the Utah Jazz. He had helped them to the 1997 and 1998 NBA finals.

27. Jerry Lucas

Before starring as a professional player in the NBA, Jerry Lucas was a nationally recognized high school athlete, a national collegiate star at Ohio State, and an Olympic and international athlete who won a gold medal in 1960. Lucas guided the Ohio State Buckeyes to three consecutive NCAA championship games (1960–1962), winning the national title in 1960 and placing second in 1961 and 1962.

In NBA, he was selected to the All-NBA First Team five times, the All-NBA Second Team twice, an NBA All-Star seven times, the 1964 NBA Rookie of the Year, and the Most Valuable Player of the 1965 NBA All-Star Game. With the New York Knicks, he captured the NBA title in 1973. In 1980, he was admitted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

28. Kristaps Porzingis

Kristaps Porziņģis is a professional basketball player from Latvia who plays for the NBA’s Washington Wizards. At 7 ft. 3 in (2.21 m) tall, he is one of the NBA’s tallest players currently in action. He can play centre and power forward. He enrolled with Sevilla in 2012 to start his professional career. He later became the 19-year-old winner of the EuroCup Basketball Rising Star title in 2015, making history as the youngest recipient of the award.

In the 2015 NBA Draft, the New York Knicks selected him as the fourth overall pick. In 2019, he was dealt to the Dallas Mavericks. Porziņģis time in Dallas was marred by injuries and patchy performance, and in 2022 he was dealt to the Washington Wizards.

29. Danny Ainge

The Celtics selected Daniel with the 31st overall choice in round 2 of the 1981 NBA Draft, bringing him to the league. He spent 14 seasons in the NBA, primarily as a shooting guard with the Celtics, Portland Trail Blazers, Sacramento Kings, and Phoenix Suns. With the Boston Celtics, he captured the NBA titles in 1984 and 1986. He participated in the 1988 All-Star Game during his playing career and was named NBA Executive of the Year in 2008.

30. Detlef Schrempf

Detlef Schrempf was selected by the Dallas Mavericks with the eighth overall choice in the first round of the 1985 NBA draft after playing collegiate basketball for the Washington Huskies from 1981 to 1985. He was a member of the 1995 NBA Third Team All-Stars, a three-time NBA All-Star, and a two-time NBA Sixth Man of the Year. He competed for 16 seasons in the NBA, spending time with the Portland Trail Blazers, Seattle SuperSonics, and Indiana Pacers.

With the SuperSonics, he advanced to the NBA Finals in 1996. He competed in the 1984 and 1992 Summer Olympics, as well as the 1983 and 1985 EuroBasket Championships, for the West German, and later German, national teams. In 2021, Schrempf was admitted into the FIBA Hall of Fame.

31. Dave DeBusschere

David DeBusschere was a player with the New York Knicks from 1968 to 1974 as well as the Detroit Pistons from 1962 to 1968. The majority of William Laimbeer’s playing career was spent with the Detroit Pistons. Before helping the Pistons win back-to-back NBA titles, he was a key contributor to their domination in the middle of the 1980s. Laimbeer was a capable shooter and rebounder who gained notoriety for his rough style and for consistently committing harsh fouls that were frequently flagrant. Laimbeer played a key role in the Pistons’ back-to-back NBA Championship victories in 1989 and 1990. He is a four-time NBA All-Star. 

33. Gordon Hayward

Gordon Hayward plays professionally for the Charlotte Hornets of the NBA. Hayward has previously played for the Utah Jazz and the Boston Celtics. Hayward guided the Butler University Bulldogs to the NCAA Tournament title game in 2010. In the following round of the 2010 NBA Draft, the Utah Jazz picked him as the ninth overall choice.

Hayward played for the Jazz for seven seasons and was a 2017 NBA All-Star. He spent another two seasons with the Celtics before they dealt him to the Hornets in a sign-and-trade in November 2020.

34. Vlade Divac

Vlade’s major playing career was spent in the NBA. He was a centre who had a reputation for being a good passer. In the late 1980s, he was one of the first basketball players from Europe to join the NBA, and he was recognized as one of the 50 Greatest EuroLeague Contributors.

Together with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Hakeem Olajuwon, Shaquille O’Neal, Tim Duncan, Kevin Garnett, and Pau Gasol, he is one of just seven players in NBA history to have recorded 13,000 points, 9,000 rebounds, 3,000 assists, and 1,500 blocked shots.  He was also the first NBA player to play in more than 1,000 games who was born and raised outside of the USA.2019 saw his induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

35. Kyle Korver

Kyle Korver is a former professional basketball player who played in the NBA from 2003 to 2020. The New Jersey Nets drafted Korver in the 2003 NBA draft as the 51st overall pick in the second round. He got traded to the Philadelphia 76ers and later the 76ers traded him to the Utah Jazz. Korver is a lethal shooting guard as seen by his three-point range percentage during his time at the Utah Jazz.

With this prowess, he set an NBA single-season three-point field goal accuracy record by shooting 53.6 per cent from three-point range. He was named to the NBA All-Star in 2015 while playing for the Atlanta Hawks. His four-time leading in the NBA three-point shooting percentage distinguishes him as the only player to ever achieve the feat. He ranks fifth all-time in 3-point field goals made and tenth all-time in 3-point field goal percentage.
