Suburban Stories: 12 Movies About Life In The Suburbs

“The suburbs are a state of mind, not a place.”John Updike (author).

I agree with the above statement, and as we all know, the suburbs are a symbol of the American Dream! It is a place where families thrive, and children can grow up safely. A place where the lifestyle is laid back with little to no pressure, a picture-perfect utopia, or so we think!

Beneath this surface of normalcy lies a darker reality. One that is often hidden from the outside world. One where everyone knows everyone else’s business, where secrets and anxieties bubble. A place of contradictions, but can be stifling and liberating, familiar and strange, plus a breeding ground for both conformity and rebellion.

Ultimately, the suburbs reflect our hopes, dreams, and fears, all played out against perfectly manicured lawns. The suburban stories in this movie‘s list remind us that the suburbs are not as perfect as they seem. Let the idyllic landscape not fool you, there’s a whole other side beyond what meets the eye. Here are 12 movies about life in the suburbs.
