Some of the most famous atheists in history include philosophers, scientists, artists, musicians, entertainers, and others. They all have one thing in common – the courage to stand for their godlessness – by being outspoken about their atheism and advocating for tolerance and understanding. 

These people have demonstrated that the absence of religious faith does not signify a lack of wonder, but rather acts as an invitation to embrace the marvels of the natural world, the uncharted territories of the human mind, and the infinite possibilities of human potential.

1. Brad Pitt

Brad Pitt is an award-winning American actor who has acted in many box-office hit movies like Fight Club, Ocean’s Eleven, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. He was once the highest-paid actor in Hollywood and is among the richest in the industry. 

Brad is a two-time divorcee, having been married to actresses Jennifer Aniston and Angelina Jolie. He is a father of 6 children, some biological while others are adopted. Though he was raised Baptist, Brad is an atheist who questions the existence of a high being. He is inclined towards secularism, free-thinking, and a more open-minded approach to spirituality. 

2. Cara Santa Maria

Cara Santa Maria is a science communicator, journalist, and television host known for her work in the field of science and skepticism. Maria was born and raised in Plano, Texas, and is a self-described atheist. She has spoken openly about her atheism on her podcasts Talk Nerdy and The Skeptics’ Guide to the Universe. Before the podcasts, she used to co-host TechKnow on Al Jazeera America. 

3. Britney Spears

Following all the legal drama between the princess of pop and her family, Britney denounced her faith and declared in a social media post that she was an atheist. The post has since been deleted and she has not spoken about her atheism in detail.  

The news was met with mixed reactions from her fans and the public, with some people praising her for her courage and honesty, while others criticized her for her beliefs. 

4. Hugh Laurie

Hugh Laurie, a British actor and musician best known for his role in the television show House is a self-described atheist. He has spoken about his atheism on a few occasions and openly says that he does not believe in a god or an afterlife. 

Hugh was born in England in the late 1950s and raised Presbyterian. He loves riding bikes, is an Arsenal fan, and struggles with mental health. Laurie’s atheism has not been a major issue in his career and thinks that the universe is a very beautiful and complex place that doesn’t need a creator or a god to explain it. 

5. Richard Dawkins

Born in the 1940s in Nairobi, Kenya, Richard Dawkins is one of the most famous and vocal atheists of our time. He is a British evolutionary biologist and author, who advocates for secularism and the separation of church and state. Richard believes in having a more rational and evidence-based worldview, emphasizing the importance of critical thinking and scientific inquiry. 

Though an atheist, he says that he is a cultural Anglican – associated with the Church of England, and is a secular Christian. 

6. Hypatia (350-415 AD)  

Hypatia of Alexandria, who lived in the 4th and 5th centuries CE, was a renowned mathematician, philosopher, and teacher in the city of Alexandria, Egypt, which was a center of learning in the ancient world. This Greek astronomer was a vocal critic of Christianity.  

Her critics accused her of being a pagan, and being a follower of the Neoplatonic philosopher Plotinus who was also a critic of Christianity, did not help her case. Hypatia was murdered by a mob of Christian fanatics in 415 AD. 

7. Seth MacFarlane

Seth MacFarlane is an American award-winning comedian, musician, producer, and animator, who is best known for creating Family Guy and Ted. He was born and raised in Kent in the 1970s and grew up to become one of the famous people from Connecticut. 

Seth is a vocal critic of religion plus a self-described atheist who doesn’t believe in God. He has used his shows to make fun of religion wondering why people still believe in ‘the invisible man living in the sky’. He engages in discussions about religion, often with a humorous or satirical tone making him a role model for many atheists. Seth is a successful and talented individual who is not afraid to speak his mind. He also advocates for LGBTQ rights. 

8. Rebecca Goldstein 

Born in 1950 in New York, Rebecca Goldstein is an American philosopher who is a self-described atheist. Her work often explores the intersection of religion, philosophy, and culture, and her atheism is rooted in her philosophical beliefs.  

Rebecca is a rationalist who believes that the only way to know anything is through reason and evidence, rejecting the idea that faith is a valid source of knowledge. Her work has been praised for its intelligence, wit, and clarity. She is a powerful advocate for atheism and a leading voice in the public debate about religion. 

9. David Cross

A comedian and actor, David Cross was raised Jewish but is currently a self-proclaimed atheist. He is best known for his work on the television series Mr. Show and Arrested Development and is a vocal critic of religion. He firmly believes that religion is the best friend that tyranny has ever had. 

Cross’s atheism is often reflected in his work, especially in stand-up comedy where he frequently satirizes and criticizes religion. He has also written and produced several films and television shows that explore the themes of atheism and religion. 

10. Ayaan Hirsi Ali

Ayaan Hirsi Ali is a prominent writer, activist, and former politician known for her strong criticism of Islam and her advocacy for secularism, women’s rights, and free speech. She has identified as an atheist and has been a vocal proponent of secular values. Ayaan was born into a Muslim family and grew up in Somalia and Kenya before she renounced her faith.  

Her journey away from Islam was influenced by her experiences growing up in a conservative Muslim environment and her exposure to more liberal and secular ideas during her time in Europe. She has been outspoken about her rejection of religion. Her book, Infidel, is a very good read, but it earned her death threats after it was published. 

11. Sam Harris

Some of his publications include The End of Faith, Waking Up, and Free Will. Harris is a self-described atheist, and his atheism is rooted in his scientific beliefs.  

He believes that science is the best way to understand the world around us. In his book The End of Faith, Harris argues that religion is dangerous because it is based on belief without evidence. 

12. Christopher Hitchens (1949-2011)

Christopher Hitchens was a prominent British-American writer and public speaker who was known for his staunch atheism and his eloquent defense of secularism and skepticism. Born in the late 1940s, he was very controversial and loved to address a wide range of topics, but his atheism was a central and recurring theme in his work. 

Hitchens, who was bisexual, supported gun rights and supported same-sex marriage, while opposing the war on drugs. He opposed religion as an ethical rule of conduct for human civilization and was in favor of free speech, scientific research, and the separation of church and state. 

13. Daniel Dennett

A vocal atheist and secularist, Dennett is an American philosopher and scientist who was born in the 1940s. He believes that the natural world is all that there is, rejecting the idea of a supernatural realm such as heaven or hell. 

Daniel also believes that there are clerics who are secretly atheists and is even researching what he calls a “don’t ask, don’t tell” conspiracy to prove that believers don’t want to hear of loss of faith. This means that there are unbelieving preachers who feel isolated because they can’t afford to lose their jobs. They console themselves that they were doing good in their pastoral roles by providing comfort and required rituals.

14. Phil Brooks

Known by his ring name CM Punk, Phil Brooks is one of the most famous professional wrestlers in the world today and is also a mixed martial artist. Born in the late 1970s in Chicago, Brooks is an open atheist and doesn’t believe in God but instead believes in science and reason, saying he doesn’t need religion to give his life meaning. 

Phil is a teetotaler and is not only outspoken about his lack of faith but also about LGBTQ rights and same-sex marriage. He is a role model for atheists, passing the message that it’s okay to have different beliefs and that we should all be respectful of each other’s views. 

15. Amy Alkon

Amy Alkon is an American author, syndicated columnist, and blogger who writes primarily on topics related to human behavior, ethics, and etiquette. She is an atheist and is known for her column, “The Advice Goddess,” where she offers advice and commentary on various aspects of human behavior, relationships, and social norms. Bad parenting and unruly children are some of her favorite topics. 

16. Kevin Bacon

Born in the late 1950s in Philadelphia, Kevin Bacon is an American actor and musician who is known for his success in film and television. He is an atheist who is outspoken about the need to separate the church and state plus other social rights issues. 

Throughout his career, Bacon has received several awards and honors. He has been married to actress Kyra Sedgwick since 1988, and they have two children together.  

17. Arian Foster

Arian Foster is a former professional American football player who is known not only for his accomplishments on the field but also for his outspoken atheism. Though he was raised as a Muslim, Arian renounced religion but he believes in reincarnation. 

His decision to publicly embrace atheism while being a professional athlete was notable because it challenged the prevailing norms in sports where religious faith is often openly expressed and celebrated. 19. Javier Bardem 

Javier Bardem is a Spanish actor who has won numerous awards for his work and is known for his roles in films such as The Sea Inside, Skyfall, and Dune. He is a vocal atheist and has spoken out about his beliefs severally. 

Javier does not believe in God but believes in people, love, and life. He’s a role model for many atheists and has shown that it is possible to be successful and respected without believing in God. He is a talented actor and a good person generally. 

20. Sir Richard Branson

Sir Richard Branson is an English billionaire businessman and philanthropist who is the founder of the Virgin Group, which consists of more than 400 companies in industries such as aviation, travel, hospitality, entertainment, and finance. 

Branson is an atheist who does not believe in God but believes in science and the power of the human mind. His success as a billionaire is proof that it is possible to live a happy and fulfilling life without religion. He says he believes in evolution and the importance of humanitarian efforts but not in the existence of God.

Born in the late 1980s in London, England, Daniel is an atheist but grew up Jewish. He says he hates religion because it leaves no room for human complexity, and it can be a dangerous force in the world. 

He is an advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and has spoken out against homophobia. He has also advocated for suicide prevention in LGBTQ+ youth. 

23. Greg Epstein 

Greg Epstein is an American philosopher and author. He is an atheist and active humanist, meaning he is non-religious and more aligned with secularism. They rely on science and reason rather than revelation from a supernatural source to understand the world.  

He is the executive director of the Humanist Institute and his goal is to create a more humane and just world. Epstein advocates for human rights, free speech, progressive policies, and democracy.   

Greg has written a book titled Good Without God: How to Be a Good Person Without Religion. Epstein argues that it is possible to be a good person without believing in God. He believes morality is not something that comes from outside but from within. He also argues that religion is not necessary for happiness or fulfillment.

25. James Cameron

James Cameron, the Canadian filmmaker and director known for creating some of the most iconic and successful films in cinematic history, is an atheist. Avatar, Titanic, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, and Aliens are some of his movies and their themes are usually related to science fiction. 

26. Margaret Downey

Another famous atheist is Margaret Downey, an American activist and educator who is the former President of Atheist Alliance International and founder and president of the Freethought Society. She is very vocal about her non-belief. Margaret started her activism in the 1990s when she became involved in the fight for the rights of atheists and other non-religious people. 

27. Madalyn Murray O’Hair 

Madalyn Murray O’Hair was an American atheist activist and founder of the organization American Atheists. She is known for her prominent role in advocating for the separation of church and state, as well as her involvement in several landmark legal cases like the 1963 Supreme Court ruling that ended Bible reading in public schools. 

She was at one point, the most hated woman in America. O’Hair was a militant feminist who hated women’s inequality. She was killed in 1995 at the age of 76, along with her son and granddaughter. 

28. Stephen Hawking (1942 – 2018)

Believing that nobody made the universe, and nobody controls anyone’s destiny, Stephen Hawking was a British theoretical physicist and cosmologist, who was an atheist who believed that there is neither a heaven nor an afterlife. 

His atheism did not stop him from being one of the most respected scientists of his time. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his contribution. 

29. Greydon Square

He has openly identified as an atheist and has used his music as a platform to express his views on atheism, skepticism, and secular humanism. 

Greydon’s work as an atheist rapper has contributed to the diversity of voices within the atheist and secular communities. His music has resonated with individuals who share his views on atheism, science, and reason. 

30. Jared Huffman

Jared Huffman is an American politician and attorney who has served as the U.S. Representative for California’s 2nd congressional district since 2013. He is a member of the Democratic Party and is the only openly atheist member of Congress. 

Huffman came out as an atheist in 2017 because he wanted to be honest with his constituents and to show that it is possible to be a successful politician without believing in God. 


Those are the stories of some famous atheists. It is not their godlessness that defines them, but rather the seriousness of their undying commitment to discover the secrets of human nature. Atheists are just as intelligent, kind, and compassionate as people of faith. ³¢±ð³Ù’s all be more tolerant and understanding. But in the words of Albert Camus, “I would rather live my life as if there is a God and die to find out there isn’t than live my life as if there isn’t and die to find out there is.”
