He was born on June 9, 1957, as Thoma Dexter Jakes in South Charleston, West Virginia. His parents were Ernest Sr. from Mississippi while his mother Odith was from Alabama. The two lived in their respective states until the end of the Civil war when they settled in West Virginia.

He grew up in Vandalia, West Virginia. He attained his Bachelor’s degree in biblical studies in 1985 and later a master’s degree in the same field in 1990 from Friends International Christian University. It is impressive that he worked as he studied to sustain his ministry. He is a famous American Bishop who has authored many books. He is also a filmmaker. He is known as the best American preacher as recorded by Time Magazine. He preached his first sermon that addressed the pain of women in 1992. The sermon was entitled ‘Woman, Thou Art Loosed’. He is the founder and senior pastor of The Potter’s House, a non-denominational American Megachurch based in Dallas, Texas, United States of America. The church has a record of 30,000 members and a further international audience.

The name Jake is drawn from the Hebrew name “Supplanter”  of Jacob and is a boy’s name. This is amazing because when the parents named him Jakes, they had no idea he will become a famous best Bishop in the United States of America. Jakes began ministry at the age of 25. He joined the Greater Emanuel Temple of Faith church based in West Virginia. The church has only ten members. He became the pastor in 1982. Further, he moved to various churches in 1988 when he joined the denomination known as Higher Ground Always Abounding Assemblies led by Bishop Sherman Watkins. He later moved to South Charleston, West Virginia in 1990 where his congregation grew to 300 members. He is known to have moved to Cross Lanes, West Virginia.

He was very focused on preaching the word of God and reaching many people. In his quest to accomplish this desire, he launched a weekly television broadcast on the Trinity Broadcasting Network. This was the beginning of his world platform of televangelism in 1992. In addition, his program was aired weekly on Black Entertainment Television. This television platform helped him begin to hold a big conference themed ‘ManPower Conference”. The purpose was to motivate men to establish their roles in the communities.

5. His move to Dallas Was a New Beginning

In 1996, his congregation had grown not only physically but also through mass media. This move encouraged him to move his family to Dallas. In addition, he moved with 50 church employees. This was the beginning of The Potter’s House. His first service had a congregation of 2,000 people. This is recorded as the first congregation of The Potter’s House. From The Potter’s House, he has grown and established the Metroplex Economic Development Corporation (MEDC). He has also established a school called Clay Academy in Capella Park, a mixed-used, new urbanism community.
