Charles Frazier Stanley also known as Pastor Emeritus of First Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia. He was born on September 25, 1932, in Dry Fork, Pittaylvania County, Virginia. Charles was named after his father who died nine months after he was born. He grew up in rural Dry Fork on the outskirts of Danville, at the age of 12, he became a born-again Christian. He began his life’s work in Christian ministry at the age of 14.

He has served as a senior pastor for 49 years. Charles is the founder and president of In Touch Ministries, which widely broadcasts his sermons through television and radio. From 1984 to 1986, Charles served two one-year terms as President of the Southern Baptist Convention. 

1. His Early Education

Even at a young age, Charles was determined to be a pastor who would share the word of God through any means. His family knew that he would end up taking theology classes that would help with his mission. This is why when he came of age, Charles studied at the University of Richmond and earned a Bachelor of Arts.

He moved on to Southwest Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth and earned a Master of Divinity. Charles also earned a Master of Theology and a Doctor of Ministry degree from Luther Rice Seminary in Florida which is now located in Lithonia, Georgia.

2. The In Touch Ministries

In 1972, Stanley launches a half-hour religious television program called The Chapel Hour. Charles later founded In Touch Ministries in 1977. Its main mission is to lead people worldwide into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ and to strengthen the local church. In 1978, the Christian Broadcasting Network began televising In Touch.

3. Interesting Global Broadcast 

He is behind the mega reception of the In Touch program whose main agenda was to bring more people to Christ. The show has been translated into 50 languages and is broadcast on 500 radio stations, 300 television stations, and several satellite networks including The Inspiration Network and Trinity Broadcasting Network.

4. Modern Ways to Spread the Gospel

All of Charles’ sermons along with other audio and video programming are available on the In Touch Website. It can be found in modern streaming services like Spotify. On these modern platforms, the series has been rated a 5. The Ministry also publishes In Touch magazine as a way to attract the younger generation to the word of God. 

In Touch uses tools like radio, television, magazines, and digital media to advance the Gospel as quickly as possible. Charles’writings and broadcasters help both the younger generation and older generation with day-to-day problems.

5. Counseling The Community

Charles used the In Touch ministry as a way to help young people overcome issues such as finances, parenting, personal crises, emotional matters, relationships, and Protestantism. He believes the Bible to be the inerrant word of God a belief strongly reflected in his teaching. Charles invited Lisa Ryan to co-host a question and answer in 2005. 

The segment was intended to help the audience grasp the content of the sermon through questions. In 2007, he continued the segment along and began using the final segment of the In Touch TV and radio programs to teach his 30 Life Principles.

6. Influences on His Work

While he focuses on the In Touch ministry, Charles developed 30 Life Principles that guided his life and helped him grow in his knowledge, service, and love of God. He used these principles that he shares often including in books, bibles, and study guides. Charles gives all the credit to his grandfather George Wahington Stanley who inspired one of his most referenced principles, Obey God and Leave all the consequences to Him.

Charles has also made a note of how he uses the principles of Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich in his endeavors as a pastor and how they help him. He says” I read it every year to remind myself of the truth if God is not just for one career field. It is for all manner of work and ministry.

7. His Personal Life

Charles and his wife Anna were married for more than 40 years. However, in 1993 she filed for divorce following their separation in 1992. They both agreed that they should seek a legal separation instead while seeking reconciliation. On March 20, 1995, she filed for divorce again. During this time the Moody Radio Network station in Atlanta took his daily broadcast off the air.

8. Marriage complication

His divorce from his wife was complex! However, it was settled in 2000. The congregates at the Southern Baptist Convention could not allow him to resign because he was a good pastor. The matter was complicated because Charles had said he would resign as a pastor if he became divorced. The members of the church overwhelmingly voted to keep him on as a pastor. According to First Baptist Atlanta’s bylaws, Charles was allowed to remain as pastor as long as he did don’t remarry.

9. His Awards and Honors 

Over the course of his career, Charles has been awarded and honored for the work he does in the ministry. In 1988, Charles was honored by the National Religious Broadcaster’s Hall of Fame. In the following year, Charles was named Clergyman of the Year by Religious Heritage of America. NRB named Radio Program of the year in 1989. In 2017, Thomas Nelson Publishing recognizes Charles for selling more than 3.5 million copies of his books.

10. He was succeeded by Anthony George

After a long time serving in the ministry serving God, he appointed his predecessor in 2017 as Anthony George. Anthony became the Senior Pastor of First Baptist Church later. However, officially, he declared his retirement as Senior Pastor. He then became an emeritus pastor and he has continued working as he does not believe in not serving God at In Touch Ministries.
