Bands play a critical role in the entertainment industry. Their importance extended far beyond just creating and performing music. They serve as a breeding ground for new musical styles and sounds thus pushing boundaries and expanding the sonic landscape.

They experiment with different instruments, techniques, and influences leading to genre-bending creations that inspire other artists and audiences.

 I am a true witness that bands offer a unique live experience that solo artists can鈥檛 perform. Bands provide a platform for individual musicians to showcase their skills, songwriting abilities, and unique voices. In this article, I am going to discuss the famous boy bands in the history.

1. The Beatles

The Beatles was a powerful and famous band that was formed in the early 1960s in Liverpool, England. It comprised of four members John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. The band was recognized as the most influential band of all time.

 Their music style ranged from Folk and Indian music to psychedelia and hard rock. They were the pioneers in recording, songwriting, and artistic presentation. They left a great legacy in the music industry as they revolutionized many aspects of the music industry and at many times publicized as leaders of the era鈥檚 youth and social-cultural movements.

Through the journey, they received numerous awards and recognitions including the Grammy Awards which inducted them into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Their impact on music, culture, and society continues to be explored and celebrated every day.

2. Backstreet Boys

Backstreet Boys are an American vocal group that was formed in 1993 in Orlando Florida. The group comprises five members. Nick Carter, Howie Dorough, AJ McLean, Brian Littrell and Kevin Richardson. Their music style ranges from pop, dance-pop, R&B, teen-pop, and adult contemporary.

The band gained wide worldwide fame after the release of their international debut album, Backstreet Boys in 1996. The band is recognized as the best-selling boy band of all time and has sold over 100 million records worldwide.

They are the first boy鈥檚 band to have their ten albums reach the top 10 on the Billboard 200.  The band has received numerous awards and recognition including a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on 22nd April 2013.

3. *NSYNC

*NSYNC is an American boy band and a vocal group that was formed by Chris Kirkpatrick in 1995, in Orlando, Florida. The members of the band consist of Justin Timberlake, Joey Fatone, Lance Bass, and JC Chasez. They to fame in the late 1990s and 2000s and later became one of the bestselling boy bands of all time.

The group was disbanded in 2002 but later in 2013, they reunited for a performance at the MTV Video Music Awards. They have received several awards and recognition of appreciation for good work in the music industry. In 2018 they received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

4. Boyz II Men

Boyz II Men is an American vocal harmony group from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania formed in 1985. They are globally known for their emotional ballads and a cappella harmonies. Their music style ranges from R&B, Soul, pop, and new jack swing. They gained wide fame in 1991 after the release of the Billboard Hot 100- top five singles 鈥淢otownphilly鈥 and 鈥淚t鈥檚 So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday鈥.

The original members of the band included Nathan Morris, Wanya Morris, Shawn Stockman, and Micheal McCary. On awards and recognitions they have received four Grammy Awards, nine American music awards, and nine Soul Train Awards. They played a big part in shaping the music industry as they influenced a generation of singers and groups with their vocal talents and songwriting.

5. New Kids on the Block

New Kids on the Block was formed in 1984 in Dorchester, Massachusetts. The band consists of brothers Jonathan and Jordan Knight, Joey Mclntyre, Donnie Wahlberg, and Danny Wood. They gained global recognition in the late 1980s and early 1990s with their catchy pop music and sold more than 80 million records worldwide.

They paved the way for future boy bands like Backstreet Boys and *NSYNC. In 1994 the band disbanded for changing musical tastes but later reunited in 2008 for a successful album and tour. In 2014, they received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2014. They influenced countless musicians and performers with their classic tunes and energetic stage presence.

6. One Direction

One Direction is an English-Irish pop boy band formed in London in 2010. The members of the group consisted of Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Herry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik who later left the group in 2015. Their style of music ranged from Pop and pop rock. Their debut album was 鈥淯p All Night鈥 in 2011 which featured hit singles like 鈥淲hat Makes You Beautiful鈥 and 鈥淥ne Thing鈥.

 They embarked on so many tours and were well-received by the audience. They were one of the bestselling boy groups of all time before 2016 when they all took an indefinite hiatus in 2016 allowing members to pursue solo careers. 

7. BTS

BTS also known as the Bangtan Boys is a South Korean boy band that was formed. The member of the band consists of Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, and Jungkok. BTS debuted in 2013 under Big Hit Entertainment with the single album 2 Cool 4 Skool. Their style of music ranges from K-pop, pop, hip-hop, R&B and EDM.

They gained recognition for their self-produced music and socially conscious lyrics. The band was the first Korean group to top the Billboard 200 chart with multiple albums. They advocated for self-love, mental health awareness, and youth empowerment.

8. The Jackson 5

The Jackson 5 is an American pop band that consists of members of the Jackson family. The group was founded in 1964 in Gary, Indiana. The band group members consisted of brothers Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon, and Micheal.

These brothers were managed by their father Joe Jackson.

They were among the first African American performers to attain a crossover following. They have sold more than 100 million records worldwide. They have received many awards and recognition as an appreciation for their good work. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997.

9. Take That

Take That is an English pop group formed in Manchester in 1990. The members of the group consist of Gary Barlow, Howard Donald, and Mark Owen. Their musical style ranges from pop, pop-rock, and dance-pop. Some of their singles that had a great hit include 鈥淧ray鈥, 鈥淩elight My Fire鈥, and 鈥淏ack for Good鈥 which topped the charts and catapulted them to fame. The group disbanded in 1996 and later reunited in 2005 focusing on songwriting and a more sophisticated image.

Their album 鈥淏eautiful World鈥 was a critical and commercial success. They have won numerous awards including Brit Awards and MTV Europe Music Awards. The band is ranked among the best successful and influential bands of all time with a lasting impact on popular music.

10. The Beach Boys

The Beach Boys are an American rock band formed in Hawthorne, California in 1961. At first, the band consisted of three brothers Brian, Dennis, and Carl Wilson, their cousin Mike Love, and their friend AL Jardine. Their music style ranges from rock, pop, surf, and psychedelia. They achieved early success with hits like 鈥淪urfin鈥 U.S.A鈥 and 鈥淚 Get Around鈥 becoming synonymous with the 鈥淐alifornia sound鈥.

They were among the few American rock bands to sustain their commercial standing during the British Invasion.  They have sold over 100 million records worldwide. They have a big legacy in the music industry as they helped legitimize popular music as a recognized art form and influenced the development of music genres and movements.

11. Westlife

Westlife is an Irish pop group formed in Dublin in 1998. The members of the group consist of Shane Filan, Mark Feehily, Kian Egan, and Nicky Byrne. Their music style is pop. Their first debut album was known as 鈥淲estlife鈥 which made them gain a lot of fame. They have 11 number-one albums, 16 number-one singles, and 34 top fifty singles.

They have sold over 55 million records and are holders of four Guinness World Records. They have received many awards and recognitions which include one World Music Award, two Brit Awards, four MTV Awards, and four Record of the Year awards.

12. Menudo

Menudo is a Puerto Rican boy band formed by Edgardo Diaz. Their music style ranges from Latin freestyle to dance to R&B to pop-rock. The band is ranked as one of the biggest boy bands of all time by different publications such as Billboard, Us Weekly, Seventeen, and Teen Vogue. During their career, they had several radio hits and acted in a television film known as 1979鈥檚 Leyenda de Amor and two feature films Una Aventura Ilamada Menudo and Menudo: La Pelicula.

13. The Temptations

The Temptations are an American vocal group from Detroit Michigan. The members of the band consist of Otis Williams, Ron Tyson, Terry Weeks, Tony Grant, and Jawan M. Jackson. They are recognized for their choreography, distinct harmonies, and dress style. They rose to fame in the 1960s with hits like 鈥淢y Girl鈥, 鈥淎in鈥檛 To Prod to Beg鈥, and 鈥淧apa was a Rollin鈥.

 They are among the most successful groups in popular music. They have won numerous awards and recognition including three Grammy Awards and earned a reputation as musicians who pushed all forces of boundaries and reflected social issues.

14. The Monkees

The Monkees were an American pop-rock band formed in Los Angeles in the mid-1960s. The members of the band include Micky Dolenz, Davy Jones, Micheal Nesmith, and Peter Tork. They were among the most successful bands of the late 1960s. They sold more than 75 million records worldwide. The genres of music include pop rock, rock, bubblegum, and psychedelia.

They were initially conceived as a fictional band and their music became popular releasing hit singles like 鈥淟ast Train to Clarksville鈥, 鈥淚鈥檓 a Believer鈥, and 鈥淒aydream Believer鈥. In 1970 they had their last recording and later broke the band up. In 1986, there was a revival of interest in The Monkees hence leading to a 20th anniversary reunion.

15. Hanson

Hanson is an American pop-rock band from Tulsa, Oklahoma. The group was formed by three brothers, Isaac Hanson (guitar, vocals, bass, piano), Taylor Hanson (keyboards, vocals, percussion), and Zac Hanson (drums, vocals, piano. Their first music video they were still young boys 16, 14, and 11 years old respectively.

Other supporting members are Dimitrius Collins (guitar) and Andrew Perusi (bass). They were well known for the 1997 hit song 鈥淢MMBop鈥 found in their first album, Middle of Nowhere which was released through Mercury/Polygram Records. As a band, they received several awards and recognition including three Grammy awards.

16. 98 Degrees

98 Degrees is a multitalented band formed in 1994 in Springfield Ohio. The band consists of three brothers Nick Lachey, Drew Lachey, Justin Jeffre, and Jeff Timmons. They debuted in the music industry in 1997 with the self-titled album known as 鈥98 Degrees鈥 which featured hit singles such as 鈥淚nvisible Man鈥 and 鈥淕ive Me Just One Night鈥.

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, they received great success as they released chart-topping albums like 鈥淩evelation鈥 and 鈥淒ig鈥. Along the way in their career, they faced many challenges leading to the departure of Jeff Timmons in 2002 and the group ended up breaking up. They later reunited in 2012 and did so many tours. The band has sold over 15 million albums worldwide with 4 top 5 Billboard charting radio singles.

17. EXO

Exo is a South Korean boy band based in Seoul. The band was formed in 2011 by SM Entertainment and debuted in 2012. It consists of nine members namely Xiumin, Suho, Lay, Beakhyun, Chen, Chanyeol, D.O., Kai, and Sehun. They have released most of their music and performed in Korean, Mandarin, and Japanese. Their genre of music is K-pop, R&B, hip-hop, EDM, electropop, and dance-pop.

Won numerous awards during their early years such as 鈥淎lbum of the Year鈥 and 鈥淎rtist of the Year鈥 at Korean music award shows. They achieved critical acclaim for albums like 鈥淓X鈥橭DUS鈥 and 鈥淟ove Me Right鈥 showcasing their musical growth and artistic merit.

18. 5 Seconds of Summer

5 Seconds of summer is an Australian pop-rock band from Sydney, New South Wales which was formed in 2011. The group consists of four members Luke Hemmings, Calum Hood, Ashton Irwin, and Micheal Clifford. They began as just YouTube celebrities and later rose to international fame while touring with the English-Irish boy band One Direction on their Take Me Home Tour.

Since their debut and fame, they have sold more than 10 million albums sold over 2 million concert tickets worldwide, and have attained more than 7 billion streams of their songs on Music streaming services making them one of the most successful Australian musical acts in history.

19. The Wanted

The Wanted is a British-Irish boy band formed in 2009. The members of the group consist of Max George, Siva Kaneswaran, Jay McGuiness, Nathan Sykes, and the late Tom Parker. They signed a worldwide contract with Universal Music, Island Records, and Mercury Records and were managed by Scooter Braun.

Their genre of music is pop and dance-pop. They gained attention with their high-energy pop music and Irish accents. They released three studio albums within three years all reaching high positions on the UK charts. They embarked on several successful tours gaining a dedicated international fan base.

20. Big Bang

Big Bang is a South Korean boy band formed by YG Entertainment. The group consists of three members G-Dragon, Taeyang, and Daesung. Their genre of music includes K-pop, J-pop, hip-hop, dance, electronic, and R&B.  The band debuted in 2006 with a unique 鈥淗ip-hop idol鈥 concept blending hip-hop with electronic music and catchy melodies.

They gained much fame with hits like 鈥淣obody鈥, 鈥淔antastic Baby鈥 and 鈥淏ang Bang Bang鈥 topping charts in Korea and internationally.  They were the first Korean band to hold a tour in Japan achieving massive success in the market.

21. 2 PM

2 PM is a South Korean boy band formed by JYP Entertainment. The band consists of six members Jun.K, Nichkhun, Taecyeon, Wooyoung, Junho, and Chansung. Jay Park was part of the band but left in 2009 due to issues that stemmed from his posts on Myspace. Their genre of music is K-pop, hip-hop, electronic, and R&B. 

Their first debuted album was well appreciated by the audience, especially singles such as 鈥淏eastly Idol鈥. The Osmonds were an American family music group whose fame peaked in the early to mid-1970s. The members of the group are all brothers Alan, Wayne, Merrill, Jay, Donny, and Jimmy Osmond from Ogden, Utah. Their genre of music includes Bubblegum, pop rock, and country music.

They are one of the most successful and enduring family singing groups in music history. They have had several singles such as 鈥淥ne Bad Apple鈥, 鈥淐razy Horses鈥, and 鈥淕o Away Little Girl鈥 which have had chart-topping.

23. CNCO

CNCO is a Latin American boy band making waves in the music industry. The members of the group consist of Erick Brian Colon, Richard Camacho, Zabdiel de Jesus, and Christopher Velez. Joel Pimentel was a member until his departure in May 2021. Their genre of music is Reggaeton and Latin pop.

They released their first album Primera Cita on 26th August 2016 which included the famous hit 鈥淩eggaeton Lento鈥. They have won numerous awards and recognitions including Grammy Award for Best Urban Performance in 2017. They gained fans worldwide, performed in so many countries in the world, and collaborated with international artists.

24. East 17

East 17 is an English pop boy band started by Tony Mortimer, Brian Harvey, John Hendy, and Terry Coldwell in 1991 in Walthamstow, London. The band’s genre of music is pop, dance-pop, pop-rap, and hip-hop. They achieved breakthrough success with their debut single, 鈥淗ouse of Love鈥 in their first album.

This led them to topping the UK charts and setting the tone for their sound. East 17 has sold over 18 million albums worldwide according to the British Phonographic Industry. It has been certified with sales of 1.8 million albums and 2.6 million singles in the UK. In 1994, their biggest hit 鈥淪tay Another Day鈥 was the UK Christmas number one.

25. Jonas Brothers

Jonas Brothers is an American pop-rock band that was formed in 2005. They gained fame from their appearances on the Disney Channel television network. The band consists of three brothers Kevin Jonas, Joe Jonas, and Nick Jonas. Their genre of music is pop rock, rock, pop punk, and power pop. In 2005, they wrote their first record that made its Hollywood Records release.

His band has released six albums such as It鈥檚 About Time, Jonas Brothers, A Little Bit Longer, Lines, Vines and Trying Times, Happiness Begins, and The Album. The Drifters are an American doo-wop and R&B/soul vocal group. The band was formed in New York City In 1953 with numerous lineup changes throughout their history. They made early success with doo-wop and R&B hits like 鈥淭here Goes My Baby鈥 and 鈥淯p on the Roof鈥. O-Town is an American boy band formed in the first season of the reality television series Making the Band in 2000.  The members of the band include Trevor Panick, Jacob Underwood, Dan Miller, and Erik Michael Estrada. Their style of music is pop. The band received awards and nominations such as the Teen Choice Awards.

36. Blue

Blue is a British boy band formed in 2000. The members of the group consist of Simon Webbe, Duncan James, Antony Costa, and Lee Ryan. Their genre of music is pop and R&B. The band represented the United Kingdom at the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest in Dusseldorf with the song 鈥淚 Can鈥 coming in 11th place with 100 points. They have sold over 15 million records worldwide. The British Phonographic Industry (BPI) states that Blue has been certified for 3.6 million albums and 2.2 million singles in the UK.

37. B2K

B2K was an American boy band formed in 1998. The members of the band include J-Boog, Raz-B, Lil鈥 Fizz, and Omarion. The band was formed by Dave Scott an American dance choreographer and Interscope A&R Keshia Gamble. They released their first self-titled debut album on 12th March 2002. The album peaked at number two on the Billboard 200 and number one on the U.S. Top R&B/ Hip-Hop Albums cart.

The Moffatts are a Canadian pop/rock country band. The members of the band are brothers Scott, Clint, Bob, and Dave Moffatt.  Their genre of music is pop, country, pop rock, and alternative rock.  They began as a country music vocal group during their childhood and released three records.

 They were at that time regarded as the youngest band to ever sign a major label recording contract. They later embarked on another style of music such as pop to show their versatility.
