Top 10 Facts about Sea Organ

Whoever you are from whatever walk of life or culture, one thing is for sure, you love music and enjoy (or would) sitting watching the sea. Sitting by the sea brings with it a sense of happiness and calm. There is after all a reason why many sleep to ocean sounds. They alleviate all of your woes and concerns.

In Croatia, there is a way to combine these two. That s through an architectural and engineering marvel known as the Sea Organ of Zadar. Located along the shores of Zadar city, this one-of-a-kind instrument produces musical sounds by the way of the sea.

Below are some interesting facts about this experimental musical instrument.

1. Construction Possible Due to Damage from World War II

The bombing of Zadar in World War II by the Allies by an unknown author from US air force –

Zadar is an ancient city in Croatia dating back to prehistoric times. It is the oldest continuously inhabited city in Croatia. Zadar was the first city or region to be attacked during Yugoslavia鈥檚 invasion by Germany, Italy, and other Axis Powers.

During World War II, Zadar was bombed continuously between November 1943 to October 1944 by the allies. What is today known as the 鈥榖ombing of Zadar鈥 caused immense damage to the city as well as thousands of casualties?

These bombings desecrated Zadar鈥檚 coastline and the years after the war were characterized by reconstructions in the city.

The shoreline, which had several buildings close by, was rebuilt as concrete blocks securing it from degradation or the water encroaching into the land. It is on this concrete that the Sea Organ was constructed years later.

2. The Organ Was Built by Architect Nikola Basic

Nikola Basic is a Croatian architect. Some of his most popular works are the Sea Organ in Zadar and the Greeting to the Sun and the Field of Crosses. As part of Zadar鈥檚 project to redesign the city, the municipality officials tasked Basic with the task after he made the pitch on his idea.

He did so with the help of Dalmatian stone carvers, Professor Vladimir Andro膷ec, a hydraulic consultant, and Goran Je啪ina, a pipe specialist. Basic was inspired by the hydraulic (water) organ and he was able to complete the project in 2005.

3. Work on The Sea Organ Saw Basic Offered Another Project

After completing the Sea Organ, the result was more beautiful and impressive than many envisioned. This led to the city awarding Basic with another project also on the shoreline of Zadar City. The project is known as the Greeting to the Sun and is located next to the Sea Organ.

The project is a 22-meter diameter circle with photovoltaic solar modules underneath. The solar-powered cells under the glass start generating electricity around dawn, which allows the disc to glow. The cells accumulate sufficient energy by sundown to light the shoreline.

4. The Sea Organ Is 70 Meters Long with 35 Pipes

Under these concrete steps are 35 pipes that make up the 70-meter-long marine organ. The pipes are positioned so that when the sea moves, the movement causes these pipes to produce musical chords.

Each pipe is blown by column air that is propelled by a water column’s movement via a water-filled plastic tube. The tuned musical notes from the pipes are produced by the apertures that are situated in the highest steps of the vertical planes.

5. The chime-like, beautiful, and undiluted notes are then produced as a result of Air and Water Flows in the Pipes

The pipes have whistles incorporated into them and come in various lengths. Each of these pipes on the organ has a unique chord and tubing.

You can hear changes in the harmony and tone depending on where you are standing on the steps. The performed chords are the consequence of the random distribution of wave energy in space and time to each organ.

The air openings in the marine organ allow it to breathe in air, which allows it to be turned into a musical instrument. Through the bottom steps, air and water enter.

The chamber lying below is then filled with the air and water that are forced through the lower steps. The water and air then exit via the higher stairs.

6. The Sounds from The Organ Never Repeat

Do you know how your local playlist gets repetitive after several listens? Well, you don鈥檛 have to worry about that with the Sea Organ.

The sounds by the organ are dependent on weather conditions that influence wind and waves hitting the shoreline. This, therefore, means that a single sound cannot be produced twice due to changing sea conditions.

The intensity of the sound from the organ will always fluctuate. This, therefore, produces a soothing, hypnotic effect.

7. Opened to the Public In 2005

The Sea Organ was completed in 2005 and on April 15th, 2005, it was opened to the public. The citizens of Zadar had little touch with the sea following the second world war because the city’s iconic landmarks had been destroyed.

The purpose of building the sea organ was to reestablish the citizens of Zadar’s connection to the sea. The installation of the sea organ is very unique and has made the inhabitants of Zadar feel proud.

8. A Major Tourist Attraction

Until you鈥檝e heard it yourself, it is difficult to believe that the sea can play the music that will excite you. And this is part of the charm. Only experiencing it makes you understand just how impressive the sea organ is.

When you stroll in the western embankment of Zadar that your ears will catch the strangest and most beautiful sound that is floating on the air as you are approaching the end of the Peninsula.

You will then notice a lot of people either lying or sitting on the lapped stairs that are located along the shoreline. Since it was opened to the public, the Sea Organ attracts millions of tourists annually.

9. Received an Award in 2006

Merely a year after its opening, the Sea Organ was already gaining international accolades. In 2006, the fourth edition of the European Prize for Urban Public Space was held.

The sea organ was among the major winners of the event. The Sea Organ won the 鈥榚x-aequo鈥 an art award at the event.
